Acura MDX.

' 15 Traverse AWD works as nice as my brother in law's Acura and dependable at a much cheaper price. New body style for the '18s give a negligible more room, but the '17s which have all the bugs worked out can be had at bottom floor pricing.

The new Nissan Rogues are pretty nice (2014+). They are a crossover, have CVT, and are a crossover. TFL car and some others have done videos and they apparently have pretty good AWD system, compared to similar crossovers (CRV, Escape, etc.). they are also the roomiest small crossover I've been in. In my opinion, most interior space you get in a similar-sized car. I'd assume they do pretty well in snow and mud. Not sure about offloading for any of these crossovers, though. They have good reliability ratings and are priced VERY nicely right now as well.

I always liked the Nissan Xterra's. I think they stopped making them last year though but can find plenty used ones.

2015 was the last year for the Xterra. I ALMOST bought one, and I would have had I known it was the last production year.

If I don't end up just keeping the truck or getting a cap, the vehicles I'm primarily looking at are the Durango and Acadia/Traverse. Also looking at the Pathfinder but I'm weary of the CVT in the conditions I'll have the vehicle in.

4wd SLE Yukons at Laura GMC for 48K. Alot of vehicle for the money IMO and far superior ride, comfort, and tech than a 4runner with comparable fuel economy.

I wouldn't trade my truck for any smallish crossover regardless of brand (Audi, Hyundai, Subaru) Agree that price of large SUV's (Tahoe, Expedition, etc...) can get eye wateringly expensive.

With that said perhaps the camper shell option might be a good choice. Some of them with side glass and color match do indeed resemble a Suburban.

If you're looking for so,etching to take off road the 4 runner is a good choice, even all the newer Tacoma guys are ditching the truck for the 4Runner. If it's staying on road, I have a Lexus RX 350 and that's a great car.

I bought a beater blazer..for those that are eyeing Kia of hyundai, be warned that they are stickers on that warranty..we had two kia sorento both grenade engines and complete ac systems under 100k miles and Kia said it all from lack of maintance..all had to be paid out of pocket

I second the topper. I also just rented a 2017 Durango 6cyl. That is a nice vehicle i almost want to buy one myself as a second vehicle but my second vehicle needs to get 30mpg plus.

Not a problem if you get service at the dealership. Ive owed 4 never a problem with warranty all service at the dealership, small price to pay for the warranty.

True, just saying that the amount of huge failures with so few miles has convinced me that Korean autos are junk. I've never seen an engine fail, the one I maintained got high end fluids and oil changes at 5k on the dot, with 99% highway miles on it. And ended up throwing a rod ..but like anything in life, everybody has different experience with different brands

What i've seen from the korean brands, their resale values are in the toilet. A coworker of mine just took it in the shorts trading in his 2015 Sante Fe on a new F-150, lost almost half its value.

Always liked the 4runners. Almost bought one over my '17 Silverado.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
