We are assuming that 2500hd has 4.10s..."In my company" indicates a fleet truck that could have 3.73s.

Even with 3.73 gears he still should have no problem towing 6000lbs.  Something must be up that a 1500/ 5.3 /3.42 would tow better than a "fleet" 2500.   It should be checked out.  Anything else would be guessing.

certain trucks don't like certain trailers. I had a 04 duramax and while towing a flatbed trailer it would be all over the road so I hooked up my 94 light duty 2500 ( heavy half ton  six bolt wheels) and it pulled the trailer and the same load nice and straight at 65 mph. so figure that one out. took the duramax to the dealer and nothing wrong.  I think design flaw. engineers at gm need a kick in the rear. a lot has to do with how level the hookedup trailer is.  just my thoughts.

its me again. just bought a 17 hd gas and while towing noticed the tranny shifting way too many times. in tow mode and manual shift sometimes it cant make up its mind. it down shifts and upshifts at the same time tach will go to 5000 and the when I'm behind the wheel theres a lot of custom words for gm in there. cant they make a vehicle that's a joy to drive instead of one to bitch at on ever steep hill. in the mountain passes its terrible to drive. shifts so many time its sickenning

6000 pounds behind a 2500hd with 3.73s does turn them almost into slugs...I know, I have one in the driveway...that, and a 5400 pound camper, and an 18ft 10k gvw equipment trailer, and an 18k gvw 5x8 utility trailer. Yeah, this truck has been used....shoulda, coulda, woulda held out for 4.10s. They are only rated at 9400 pounds towing with 3.73s...just look at a 1500's tow rating.

While they will tow it, a 1500 will feel stronger doing it. My dad's 1500 5.7l Ram tows his tractor/trailer combination (probably 7500 pounds) a LOT easier than my truck does (almost effortlessly)...but controlling it is another story, he gets the pucker factor award. I would rather have a more anemic drive than one with a pucker factor, but hey....

I've actually had my 2500hd with a 3500# camper on a hill in New Hamshire where it couldn't get enough wind to shift into 2nd gear...I wouldn't even think of trying that hill with my 5400 camper.

Agree the 2500 with 4.10 should out perform the 5.3 with 3.42 gears - I believe that the transmissions are the same gearing so the differences are in the torque/HP and rear end. My old 07 2500HD towed 6000 lb TT with ease. Hills were done in 4th gear at 3500 RPMs and for the most part flats shifted between 5th and 6th - it did not seem to take much to drop between those two.

 

I never tried to tow the same trailer with a 1500 and 5.3. Now my boss tows a large boat with a burb with the same set up as your 1500. It seems to strain more than my 2500 ever did.

 

Probably your 2500 need a tune - maybe a new fuel filter or air filter - you might also try some injector cleaner. Also has your MPG gone down?

The 6L80 (1500) and 6L90 (2500) are identically geared.

The engines also have almost identical torque and hp peaks and the curves are very similar.

The L83 makes 382 lb-ft @ 4100 rpm and 355HP @ 5600 rpm.

The L96 makes 380 lb-ft @ 4200 rpm and 360HP @ 5400 rpm.

The difference in they way they pull is the rear end gear AND the weight difference between the two trucks.
Base Curb Weight for the 1500 CC 4x4 is 5321lb.

Base Curb Weight for the 2500HD CC 4x4 SB is 6532lb.

If you have the L83 / 6L80 combo with the NHT (max tow package) in your 1500 you have a 3.73 rear gear.   HP, TQ, trans gearing and final drive are essentially identical between the L83 / 6L80 / NHT 1500 and a "fleet spec" 2500HD.  The 4.10 gears in the non-commercial 2500HD will help with acceleration whether towing or not but the truck is still 1200 odd pounds heavier than the 1500.  You would need even shorter gears (4.55 ish - I didn't do the math) to overcome the additional weight.

Two other quick points.  First, the NHT 1500 is rare.  I was looking for one before I bought my current truck (see signature).  Was told that less than 5% of 1500's have the NHT package.  Second, acceleration is only a small part of the equation.  Control and stopping are much more important in my opinion.

Perhaps the OP's concerns are really about the different shift algorithms used between the two different trucks?  My HD seems to have fairly high RPM shift points, higher than I have ever seen in a 1/2 ton.

My 2014 1500 was a screamer.  Not unlike my 2017 2500HD.  All gassers are screamers.  Just look at their torque curves.  They have to be.

I have verified a 4.10 rear end by the glove box code. I’m accepting the idea of the high revs, and completely agree that the 2500 is a better all around towing truck. I’ve had 4 2500 chevys with the 6.0, and ran them all to over 250k miles. I think a tuner is my next buy....maybe wake her up a little bit [emoji106]

Custom tune really helps out these 6.0s. Tuned mine back in July. 5,000 miles of smiles and power! no issues!

That's good.  Because you have no warranty.  If it weren't for the powertrain warranty I would call Black Bear Performance tomorrow.

Lol.  Warranty.  Who cares haha.  The power is worth it and the likelihood of one of these failing is almost as good as winning the lottery.  Tuned my 17 when it had 9000 miles on it abd i bought it as a demo with 8000.  Besides... when you can buy a 50000 mile complete pullout (L96/6L90e and the t case) for $2500 it's not even worth thinking about.

Lol, flash back to stock, dealer never knows...

 

 

Before you call my bluff there are 1000's of LS motor vehicles that have been through the dealer with zero issues.

    • Fred was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young pullets, and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the unsuspecting populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention. Vote carefully in the next election, you can't always hear the bells.
    • Can someone confirm if the GM order workbench terminal is able to validate a custom build sequence:   1) Initialize the Allocation Base: Open a new vehicle build queue, select the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban 4WD, and pick the High Country (3LZ Preferred Equipment Group).   2) Select the Diesel Powertrain: Go directly to the engine configuration screen and choose RPO code LZ0 (3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel). Ensure it maps to the MHS 10-speed automatic transmission.   3) Deploy the Seating Swap: Navigate to the Interior Options screen and enter RPO code ATT to replace the standard captain's chairs with the power-release 60/40 bench seat. Because you are not trying to force a separate luxury or air-suspension bundle, the standard, premium D07 Fixed Floor Console remains active. The system will accept this change immediately without triggering a warning message.   3)Apply Heavy-Duty Hauling Capability: Input RPO code NHT (Max Trailering Package). The commercial terminal will automatically bundle the required trailering hardware and software modules to support the diesel engine's maximum towing capacity.   5) Layer the Premium Tech and Glass: Separately add code C3U (Panoramic Power Sunroof) and code UKL (Super Cruise) to the order screen.   6) Run the Final Validation: Click the "Validate Order" button at the bottom of the interface.
    • Spent the last hour or 2 googling and reading up on the spacer thing. I don't like the loss of thread contact on the slip on spacers, but it appears you can get "extended" lug nuts that reach into the hole of the wheel to get back the lost threads. Looks like the only true hubcentric slip on spacers are at least .375". I'd want as little as I could get away with and don't want to cause other clearance issues going any thicker. Bora seems to offer what appears to be a well made .375" spacer and extended lug nuts. I searched here and did find a couple threads recommending Bora. But not cheap. By the time I buy spacers and lugs, new TPMS sensors, then pay a tire shop to install the new sensors, I suspect I'm going to be in over $400. Thinking about running out and getting some washers to put behind the wheel to see if .375" is enough to clear calipers, turn lock to lock without rubbing, and to see if the wheels/tires look strange pushed out a little. This would just be to check fitment.
    • Roadmaster makes some quality parts; I have their sway bar. I considered the RAS, but I ended up bagging. I didn't know what kind of ride I'd get with RAS, and the bags have interior jounce bumpers, so I can run 0 pounds pressure. I figured I'd have the best of normal suspension ride with assist on-demand. But it seems you got pretty much the same in one item.
