6.2 Mods

I just purchased a used 2016 Silverado Crew Cab, short box with 6.2, 8-speed, 3.42 rear and Max Towing Package. It only has 13,000 Miles’s on it.

My my question is, what mods can I do to not void my warranty but still get a little more performance?  I don’t want loud exhaust but wouldn’t mind a slightly louder tone. I’ve read pros and cons with CAI......some say they work, some say they don’t. I’m completely clueless with tuners.......lol.

I have no problem leaving it stock if I’m not going to gain much or screw with my warranty. I’m already very impressed with the difference between this 6.2 and my 2015 with the 5.3.

Any help would be much appreciated, Kurt

If you want a slightly louder and deeper tone to the exhaust have the stock muffler cut out and install a Magnaflow 12909. You can leave the flapper or cut it out with the muffler. If you don't like it or sell it later you can swap back.. If the shop does it correctly. I left my flapper and have been experimenting with it opened and closed. I feel slightly more torque with it operational and I attribute that to the 6.2 having such a large diameter pipe.
Shouldn't hurt your warranty.
Also turning of AFM helps performance.
I installed a tuner and bumped up the throttle sensitivity and that helped a lot.

I got a volant cai on my 2014 6.2 and could tell a get up and go difference but once i cut the resonator and both mufflers off there was a tad bit slower but looking to get it tuned soon

We have multiple data sources that prove CAI makes huge amounts of hp for the dollar and not a single person has done a before and after dyno and showed hardly any gains.

Don’t listen to anyone that says otherwise

Thanks for the replies. I think I’ll get a good Cold Air Intake for it first. I’d like to buy a used one but I want to make sure it’s a good one.

I do do have a good friend who has an exhaust shop that does excellent work so if I decide to change anything on the exhaust, I’ll have him do it.

The last thing would be some sort of a tuner that would help with performance.....but it seems there is a lot of different opinions on those too.

Another vote for a Magnaflow 12909 to replace the OE muffler and flapper valve.

A tune will void your warranty, if you want to keep that then don't tune until after the warranty is expired. If you do a tune get a custom tune, hand helds aren't all that great. Getting rid of AFM doesn't improve performance, just lowers your mpg some and make it drive a little better in certain instances at lower speeds. A CAI (they aren't really cold air on the trucks) don't give much if any performance at all, it is all placebo effect (no one can feel 5 hp, especially in a 2.5 ton truck). Don't go to loud on the exhaust, it won't sound good when in 4 cylinder mode. Also stay away from chambered mufflers, they have a tendency to drone and don't improve performance (not to mention with all the other stuff like resonators, flappers and cats blocking the way they don't do much).

This +1.

However, I'm not sure I agree that the CAI kits are worthless.  After having the factory intake silencer off, it looks to have a rather convoluted air path through it.  I would think just getting rid of that an putting in the straight tube with the stock air box would be an improvement.

A friend sent me this and I thought it was interesting.

Not sure how factual it really is but I’d be interested in installing one for 15-20hp.

That's on a 5.3.

If you do a few more google searches you'll find the cold air inductions kit actually loses way more then it gains on the 6.2. Even on their website they only show the dyno from 3500 up. I actually have the intake for the 6.2 sitting in my basement, never should have bought it. Customer service is non existent. They don't answer questions, they just refer you to their website. And the quality wasn't there for how much it cost me.

DO YOU SEE THIS COLD AIR INDUCTIONS. I would very much like you to prove me wrong!

Well, I bit the bulitt and purchased an AFE Momentum GT dry air filter. With everything I’ve read and all the data/dyno tests, it had the best results overall (roughly 10hp/15tq). Well see if I like it or not.

I’m going to wait on a muffler just yet due to funds and I’m not sure what I’ll gain, if anything.

Thanks again, Kurt

That SUCKS!!!!

I based my decision on researching from websites and this test done on the Black Bear website with an actual 6.2 engine.

    • I don't wanna do major surgery/upgrades, behind-the-dash work, add amps, change radio etc. on my '26 std cab WT. On the WT, it has the base 7" IOR infotainment setup, and only two speakers (doors). Since I listen to classical, looked around for speakers that do well and dug thru reviews. Two-way speakers were found to be better than 3-way. So I've ordered a pair of  Infinity Reference REF-9632IX 2 way speakers.  [These may  or may not have been discontinued / succeeded by the 3-way ...9633 ones.]    These speakers are lauded for 3 ohm and 94db sensitivity spec so they'll work well for ordinary base car radios without amps and offer better performance (quality,  strength) than  default base paper-cone speakers. They'll be installed in a few days and I'll let y'all know what I think. Bill W San Jose
    • Thanks!   Changed out the rear shocks today to Bilstein 5100s.  So far feel much better. The stock Rancho were wore out.  Lots of heavy hauling (2 moves, home renovations, etc).  Next up is new BFG tires Monday.  Cant wait the current tires have little to no wet traction and are super loud (hum)
    • Ok, I got the all the codes. What do you all think would be a place to start?
    • How about I just point to the factory pans stand pipe little drain plug and claim its a pan with a real drain plug !. I just couldn't swallow the fact that a Dorman pan which at this point is probably the only pan out there that fits the gas version truck cost that much up here in Canada so I decided initially anyway to skip it and see what I thought of pulling the pan method and down the road if I felt inclined enough then I would either install a drain plug kit in the factory pan if there is enough room for it, or have a bung welded onto it, or put an aftermarket pan on. The thing is if the pan is not pulled then the magnets in the pan can't be inspected and cleaned or if wanting to change out the filter. However of course it certainly would make the job easier to be able to drop the oil first before having to handle the pan if dropping the pan that go around was the goal.    I knew a guy locally that was doing custom field spraying years ago with a pickup pulling a ground driven sprayer, I believe it was a GM pickup with an automatic trans. He had a drain plug in his pan and would drop the oil out of it once a week and top it back up through the dipstick tube to keep refreshing a portion of the oil often and that made the transmission last far longer than had he done nothing. Soft fields pulling 500 gallons of water at the start of each mixed up sprayer tank batch and in low range sucking along. I imagine he got some tips from other custom sprayer outfits doing the same thing at the time and learning from their blown up tranny mistakes. Transmissions then had no lock up converter so would cook the crap out of the fluid slipping that much and it would not have been synthetic fluid either.
