Service manager said that they will be putting a remanufactured motor in the truck and not a brand new one. Does anyone know if this is standard practice? I planned on calling back tommorow and getting more info on this.

Idk if it’s common practice to use remanufactured. I would say keep it just politely demand for the longest extended warranty possible for the inconvenience. Also keep it for a year and see if anything major arises that can be contributed to the engine replacement. Also check to see if the remanufactured engine will include the heads or if that will be removed from the current engine.

I currently have a 2011 Subaru Forester which had the short block replaced under warranty for excessive oil consumption. They took the heads off the old block and put them on the new. Unfortunately I’m not sure if it was new or remanufactured.

I don't think I'd accept a reman motor.  You might want to call them back and make them prove to you why they're using reman over new, that sounds sketchy to me.

When my Xfer case went out at 20k miles, they installed a reman unit.  I thought it was BS as well.

I think it mentions something in the fine print about GM reserving the right to use remanufactured parts

when possible.

Reach out to GM customer care directly as well. Ask them about warranty and what is standard practice in cases like this.

Good luck!

Reman is common, but on a low mileage 2018 yeah I'd feel a bit cheated.

If you've only had the truck 3 weeks I'd go after whoever sold it to you.   Good luck.

This is not a Ford vs GM issue as my only experience with a new "re-manufactured" engine was with a Ford truck.  It was no issue for me but this truck had close to 100k and I was paying for the replacement.  If I was under full manufacturer's warranty on an '18, I'd definitely be pushing for a brand new engine.  If you signed a document that allows for recycled parts then maybe see if you can pay the difference between new and re-manufactured.  Regardless of how this turns out, I'm sure your truck will be as good as new.  However, owning a current year truck with a rebuilt motor would suck, imo!

All GM reman engines, transmissions, and transfer cases carry a 3yr/100,000 mile warranty, so I wouldn't worry about the fact they are not using a "new" engine. They will remove the heads, intake, and the all the accessories and transfer them to the new engine. It still wouldn't hurt to contact Customer Care and see if you can get a warranty extension, or in the very least, they'll give you a voucher towards accessories..

Update:

Spoke to the service manager today, and he stated that a remanufactured motor would be put in the truck because GM doesnt offer a brand new one. I spoke to a technician at a different GM dealer who stated that he has replaced engines in trucks with brand new ones in the past. But he has also put remans in trucks as well.

I then Contacted GM care. The lady that I spoke to said she couldn’t tell me for sure what the common practice is, although she seemed to agree that this isnt a 2006 model year truck for example, and should receive a brand new motor. She created a case and their senior advisor will be contacting the service manager to figure this out. She said I will hear from the advisor within the next 2 days. We’ll see.

I work at a very large Chevy dealer here in Louisville Ky. I'll ask one of the techs what they see commonly in those cases.

GM care told me that they reached out to the service manager, and either way a reman engine was going in the truck. Service manager calls me later that day and claimed that a brand new engine was shipped to the dealership for my truck. ( I will never know)

Just got it back today, engine has a tick but I guess thats the direct injection. Who knows, guess ill see how it runs.

made it 100 miles before the truck started shaking like crazy, lost power and check engine light started flashing. Needless to say i was stranded 50 miles from home, and the truck was towed back to the dealer. Not happy. The owner and GM are now involved.

Wow sorry to hear that , I hate when that Happens ! , has to be a poor install I can't imagine two  motors go bad in a couple miles ,

Any fluid leaks ? Most of the time these trucks are problem free !   UNBELIEVABLE !

Classic example of why warranties aren't always the answer.

Warranty is only as good as the work performed.

Good luck with this.
