Call police and update them, Take pics of the other vehicle and gamage. You have everything you need to go after them and their insurance.

Not like cops are so busy chasing bad guys and murderers that they cant help you, its their job to serve the public in any way. They will be fine with it, no worries.

In all seriousness, thanks for all of the feedback. I'm going to go ahead and update the police, but it sounds like it might help if I snag some photos of the suspect's vehicle for presentation first. I don't expect much to happen except maybe piss the dude off. Retaliation isn't really my jam, and they have at least 5 cats, so I can assume the wife is a real dime. Sorry if you have 5 cats lol. The uploaded video lost a fair amount of detail, but if you can pause and look at the few frames right before the vehicle hits, you can see the dude's face lit up. I'm assuming he was on his phone at full brightness, which is super smart for night time driving! Plans for the future include: 1) not parking in street, 2) surveillance cameras that can capture license plates (should be a challenge).

BlackVue DR590-1CH purchased from https://www.thedashcamstore.com/ which I would buy from again! The main reason I went with this camera is because it is powered (for a short time) by an onboard capacitor, rather than a LiPo battery. Capacitors are much more tolerant to high temperatures. I used to have a camera with a LiPo and it would often overheat and fail. Eventually the battery swelled and the old camera died. I was going to buy on Amazon, but I wanted the GPS receiver and there wasn’t enough documentation to decide which one was right for this camera. I figured buying it as a package deal from thedashcamstore, I would be sure to get the right one. For anyone wanting to purchase this GPS module separate, the part number is SGM-1533. Searching Google will give you some eBay and Amazon results. I also bought a low voltage cutoff module that will cut power to the camera if the vehicle’s battery drops below the setting you select. I think I have mine set at 11.7v which is probably too high. The unit will often reboot when I start the truck. Search for part number D-1077/12V. Sorry I don’t have any daytime demo footage at the moment. You should be able to find some on YouTube, though. I hope that helps!

The parking mode feature is another reason I chose this camera, but as you can see in my video above, it doesn't really matter a lot at night if you can't read plates. If the link doesn't take you to 18:45 skip ahead.

The PD should take the parts you located as evidence and match them to the suspect vehicle. That coupled with any paint transfer and comparison of height measurements of the damage area will help build their case. Hit-skip here is a first degree misdemeanor, so somewhat significant. PD's here can also tow and hold the suspect vehicles if located. I used to do crash investigations, pm me with any other questions you may have.

Let us know what the police say, you could also give the info to your insurance company and see if they will peruse the other guys insurance. 

 

Hope it works out! Could have been a lot worse damage if it was head on. But still a PITA to deal with! 

 

You just sold me on a dash cam. I don’t park overnight on the street but there are some scary dashcam videos on YouTube of crazy $hit happening out of nowhere while people are commuting.

Thanks for that info. Situations like yours should make everyone put a dash cam on their vehicles.

OP: Your report to the local PD is the only way to document the incident. Do that, then call your insurance co. Sometimes, when it isn't your fault, there is no deductible, as the "other" insurance co. pays. This just happened to me on my bike. Scratches, scrapes and broken hardware. Over $3K. Not one penny out of my pocket except time lost chasing the slow-assed Harley repair shop.
