Actually, I tend to have to change lanes a lot on the freeways around here due to all the hills. Everyone else is braking when going downhill so, as long as there's no one behind me, I'll move over to the left lane to build momentum down the hill then I slip back over to the right once the cruise control drivers pass me on the way up the next hill. I just hate when people on cruise control pass me then get in front of me just as we start going down a big hill.

Ha ha ha! I am the EXACT same way! I go 45 mph and hug the right lanes behind other 18-wheelers going uphill.

Downhill, I regularly exceed 90 mph on 70-mph highways.

People don't understand me when I am all over the highway, going left to right then back to left and changing speed. It's all about hypermiling, boys and girls.

I'm not as skilled/ dedicated as you are and I'm not generally comfortable going much more than 10 km/h over the speed limit downhill, though sometimes I'll take it to 20 over ahead of a big hill in my wife's gutless car. I do like the fuel economy I get, though. In similar conditions, I can do one full litre/ 100 km better than my wife/ the cruise control can (sorry, you'll have to do the conversion yourself). Unfortunately, that usually involves having to explain to my wife several times on each short drive why I'm "only" going 60 in the 70 zone. And having to flip off the guys who are mad because I prevented them from racing up to the next red light.

Okay that I don't do. I'm a cruse control driver.  No punch and glide. No neutral coasting. No free falling down hills. My father says I drive like a Terminator. Total machine.

I know l/100 km, I used to live in Germany. I can believe it. I am easy on the gas, I try to drive as if there's an eggshell between my foot and the gas pedal. Makes a huge difference. With stop lights, I use the brakes as a last minute resort and I wind up passing other people who decided to speed up and then come to a full stop just when the red light turns green. Sometimes I get into that car's lane because other people behind me want to accelerate faster. I try not to inconvenience anybody.

It's pretty common to see cars going 80 mph (130 km/h) around here on the I-15.

Around here, 70 mph is a suggestion. People still drive around 80 to 85. Even in southern Orange County where it's posted at 65, people drive 80. Even back in the old days when it was 55, the highway patrol hardly cared if one did 75 mph.

Cruise control - it brakes while I'm doing downhill. Don't like that at all. I don't really need to do neutral coasting anymore since the top gear is so high.

I’m not usually around many hills, my car will down shift to maintain speed going downhill as well as up. I’ve seen tractor trailer trucks speed up going down hill getting ready for the next one. I’ll keep an eye out so to speed up so they don’t have to go left. Usually after a couple I’m far enough ahead. I’m always in my mirrors.

If you look at those tread depth gauges you buy in the parts stores, the cheap ones, you will see the 'yellow' caution at 6/32 on some and 5/32 on others. That is were tire sales people and dealerships will start bugging you. The red starts on these gauges at 3/32 but the law is 2/32.

Here's a rough rule of thumb. IF ALL SEASON tires are your only tires 5/32 is time to change in the snow belt.

That time between 5/32 and 2/32 is the most fuel efficient time in a tires life.

Looks like my all seasons are at ~3/32 and my winters are at ~5/32. So if I wasn't planning to sell this car and get a T1 by spring, it would probably be time to start researching tires.

I'm curious if there are any "hypermilers" who are in a gmt800 and what youre able to pull off in that.

My previous best gas mileage was 28.6 after a drive from Dana Point to Riverside and back.

Just now, I did Dana Point to Orange County Airport and back and managed to get 28.8. It's not flat all the way and I went 55 mph to 60 mph.

I am very pleased with it. My 2012 F-150 got around 24 but discovered it was overly optimistic when I filled up my tank so I'm guessing around 22 mpg.

My understanding is that the Silverado's computer is spot-on so I am getting at least 28 mpg. Not too bad for a 4x4 V8.

I am curious to see what I'd get after I fill it up with Mexican gas. I do notice improvement because it doesn't contain ethanol as required in the U.S.

I know... that's why I get it in Mexico. It's only 50 miles south.

Been two years since I started this thread. I was driving back home to Dana Point when I checked to see how many MPG I was getting over the past 400 miles... it was at 21 for a while then I inflated my tires back to 40 psi and saw that gas mileage improved to 22. On highways, I drive between 60 and 65 mph. I hit 75 mph going downhill and 55 mph going uphill. I am very pleased with the gas milage.

Do you ever reset the 'best' number or is that 'best 400 lifetime'?

I never reset mine -- the 'average' is always the most recent.

as much as I hate the rough ride at 40 psi, the truck rolls better and reduces wear on the front tires at this pressure

It may be a little over two years old, but I have only 7,500 miles on it and I might have reset it a few times within the first few months of ownership when it had less than 1,000 miles.

I didn't know about the wear being reduced.. it's 5 psi above the recommended limit at 35 and I thought I'd be wearing it a little more quickly if I deviate from the guidelines. The back suspension gets pretty tricky when I have it at 40 psi though but I don't go four wheeling on it anymore so it's fine with me.
