Overcome Power Loss?

Recommended Posts

Like many of you on here we all mod our trucks with lifts and levels and along with that comes larger heavier tires. Has anyone found any tips to make these trucks actually respond to the changes,  without reprogramming the ecu with hp tuners or an autocal? Just find it funny how bone stock you can get 25mpg and with a tire and level change lose 10mpg.

Gear Ratio has a lot to do with this.

What axle Ratio do you have?

What size lift and tires?

This.  At the end of the day, you can't change physics with increased resistance and drag from a lift and heavier rolling stock, but you can help the engine by using a lower gear ratio (front and rear).  Don't forget the the mileage effect is amplified by the odometer under-reporting miles travelled with larger tires, unless it has been corrected.

A 10mpg loss is severe and probably not accurate as duke indicated.

Depending on tire size increase you will need recalculating.

I have Bilstein 5100 top settings, 285/55/20 and not sure on ratio have to look. I average 15-17 mixed driving and then with the AC on the truck just so slow. Have my speedo recalculated too

Gearing is the only way to get the power/mileage back.

You can can tune all day long and it will help a little. Tunes usually sacrifice mileage for power anyways.

Your tires are only 1 cm wider tire than stock and have a 55% of 1cm greater diameter.  This size is not the culprit, it is the weight of the tire you chose. Your Bilstein level is less than 2" and will not have dramatic impact on your combined mpg's.  Keep unsprung weight in mind when tire shopping.  "P" rated tires are considerably lighter in most cases and a good quality brand will handle all of your needs.

You raised up the front end, put on bigger/wider tires (i'm guessing more aggressive tread). All of those things affect the way the air flows around your truck. You'll never get the stock aerodynamics back and your highway mileage will take a permanent hit. Granted that shouldn't drop your mpg by 10. I don't imagine you were routinely getting 27 before.... so your actual drop is probly closer to 5 mpg.

Did your right foot get any heavier than it used to be? that seems to happen when exhaust is modified.

There have been a ton of threads about lifting, bigger and heavier tires and the resultant bitching and moaning about mpg and power loss. I'm never ceased to be amazed that these people spend thousands of dollars on those mods and fail to save some coin for a gear change, then they bitch again because they don't want to spend the dollars to fix what they screwed up in the first place.

On my 2014, I had a 2" spacer up front to level on stock P275-55-R20. I was still getting 23/24 highway and 17 city. AC always on.

You have something else going on. Lifting 2 inches up front really didn't change mileage, and unless your tires were super aggressive with lots of rubber and added weight, not that different.

I'm not on here bitching and crying about it, I'm fully aware that modding and adding things will change engineered specs. My point is that these “trucks” are supposed to be “offroad" and absolutely do not live up to that stock. My garbage stock Goodyear sras were probably the worst tire ever made and they are on a truck that's made to be driven in adverse conditions. Why is it that GM’S performance line of cars can be heavily modified with little change to gas mileage. What’s the point of having a truck if its setup like a prius. So I’m guessing everyone that has lifts and bigger tires just deals with the fact that gas mileage sucks and there truck feels slow compared to stock.

I was in a business that required daily off roading. Most of the people I knew who did the same usually just added ko type tires to protect from flat tires. The lift big tire thing is usually for people who like the looks and hardly ever go off road. That procedure accelerates wear on front end parts. Something most working off roaders wouldn’t be interested in, as well as reducing fuel mileage. Serious off roading is usually left to a 4 wheeler.

I m leveled on 33" with aftermarket 20s and the throttle lag was killing me.

I got a Pedal Commander and have been using it for few months.

Doesnt add any power but makes the truck sooooo much more enjoyable to drive. Instant throttle available depending on your settings.

Im in sport mode and its quite touchy. Making highway overtaking a lot easier as well.

They put the Goodyear SRA's on these trucks for gas mileage, not off roading.

The 275 55 20 size is one of the lightest tires available at 40 lbs.

BFG KO 's in that size weigh 54 lbs.

Toyo Open Country's weigh 65 lbs.

Tire weight is a gas mileage killer. A 2" level is not.

If you want the power back you need to change gears.
