Seafoam

Does anybody have any input about using Seafoam in the 5.3 engine.?

On my previous car I used Seafoam by disconnecting the vacuum hose from the brake booster while the engine was running and with a funnel slowly poured Seafoam into the intake while operating the throttle from under the hood so the engine wouldn't stall. This produced a lot of smoke, which is expected as it cleans the combustion chambers. After I was done and shut the engine off I removed the spark plugs and replaced them with new ones.

Since I don't know the history of this engine I'm thinking of doing the same thing as well as cleaning the MAF sensor with the proper spray cleaner for it.

Does anyone have any input on this or a reason I shouldn't try cleaning the combustion chambers, intake and MAF sensor.

Would appreciate any input before I do this.

I just give my 2012 5.3L regular treatments by putting Sea Foam in the gas.

I use it in all my motors this way.

If it is something you have done in the past on previous vehicles and it worked well then I don't see why not on this truck.  How many miles are on it?  Also remember to change the oil after you do it.  It will put a ton of contaminates in the oil from the process.

 

AMSOIL has Power Foam which is designed to accomplish the same thing.

Personal observations. Seafoam is great for removing soft soot, gum and varnish. Good at extending fuel life as well. I use it like dyier2, in the tank at concentration every 5,000 miles. But for removing hard carbon...yea...that takes more aggressive measures than Seafoam. IMHO of course.

You are 100% spot on.  For direct injection engines you are going to need something a lot more potent than seafoam.   BG-44K and BG MOA are having great success in treating the issues that plague direct injection systems.

Thanks for all the input. Shop down the road has BG products and equipment. May get some of the fuel treatment or have the full service done by him. He's very thorough. Cleans the intake and the maf along with other little things that shops don't bother doing. Also will install new plugs and have oil changed afterwards.

IMO

You don't have a direct injection motor.

A regular dose of Sea Foam, BG 44 K, Barryman B12 will do the job.

My 80 year old mother drives a 2000 Ford one ton diesel. My father likes to try things. Around 2008 there was enough people driving diesels that my brother was processing motor oil and hydraulic oil to run in their diesels that was drained from our equipment. My father started doing some on his own without processing. My mother shows up at the shop with the truck sounding like an 8N tractor. Clog injectors and low compression. It took a lot but sea-foam brought it back. She still drives it with added fast filters. No telling what else was added, he wouldn’t say.

You can also try AMSOIL's P.i.  Performance Improver.  It is recommended to use once every 4k miles.

Tell me more about that PI.. what is it's primary purpose and for what applications?  How is it used?

I run 1 ounce per gallon Seafoam every 2nd tank in the truck and motorcycle.  They run perfect.  1 oz. per quart in my lawn mower and weed wacker every 2nd tank.  I think all of the problems I had were bad gas from the neighborhood gas station because after I switched to a different gas station everything ran better.
