Looks like you can add an OEM and have the factory program it.

This is only installing the switch in the dash. The brake controller goes above the spare tire. I can't find any dealer that will program or install the factory one.

Condition

Some customers may request the factory Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (RPO JL1) be installed on their Full-Size Pickup or SUV when the vehicle was not ordered with the option.

This is to advise you that, if the vehicle does not have the option (RPO JL1), it cannot be added to the vehicle.

They still won't get it.... 😉

FWIW The aftermarket, under dash controller offered by your dealer will work well and will disappear from sight when the novelty wears off.  I no longer tow a trailer with brakes and could easily remove my "plug 'n play" controller but it's not worth the effort..

Apparently NOT! Here he is installing a Curt Spectrum in place of his failed attempt at the OEM ITBC.

Just got off the phone with the local Chevy dealer. parts department can order the brake controller kit from Chevy $370.00

installed. They did need the last 8 digits of the VIN number, which leads me to believe it is not available on all trim levels, but I could be wrong. also the computer have been jail broken, (you have to send them your computer, they allow you to make about 3 changes, and it cost about $1,200 bucks.) or you can stack an aftermarket computer to allow you to make all the changes you want. This is how they are adding turbo's, and nitrous to the Vettes.

Not a fan of the integrated brake controller, my 6K lbs trailer stops better with my grand cherokee than it does with my truck, gain on the GC 6, gain on the truck 10. I am quite disappointed the GC stops better and shorter distance every time even on panic pedal mashing.

It's possible to get the factory one installed.

I got mine done on my 2019 Trail Boss. It was 300 bucks with the parts labor and software included at my dealer.

The wiring is already there for LT and up Chevy Trucks. Just needed the controller and the software. 30 minute job at the shop.

Which controller did you install? Is it the one with the round twist knob or the one with the minus/plus sign and slide control? After programming, do you get all of the brake control features on your radio or on your dash cluster like the trucks that came from the factory with it? I’ve been playing tag with my dealership for a couple weeks now trying to get mine functional and they can’t figure out whether or not they’re going to be able to. I don’t wanna take it in there and pay $150 programming fee with no success....

I'm glad to hear you had success installing yours! I have a 2020 Trail Boss & just installed the switch myself & waiting for the shop foreman at the dealership to call me back to see if I need to have it programmed.

Did you have any luck installing OEM brake controller? What did you tell your dealership  to get it programmed?

What kind of idiot company sell a truck with the trailering package that doesn’t include the trailer brake.
GM sells the aftermarket trailer brake on my Chevrolet.com.
total B.S.

I get what you’re saying. It does make it confusing, but you have to remember that if it breaks people need to be able to replacements.

YES . Its factory controller..  i  Requested to be installed as part of the sale. I went back when the  tags came in and they put it in. took them only a few minutes or so .As i said the Wiring Pig tail was in the Glove box. Gm saves   25.00 by not just installing  it standard with the Trailer package.

Does anyone have a resolution on the factory controller issue.  I installed and it is not working  - 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 Custom (Trail Boss)
