2019 Silverado refuses to start, dealership is baffled.

I just took my 2019 Silverado in for its first service. Tech says it has a recall on the software and needs a reprogram. Ok, cool. I’ve had no issues at all but whatever. During the update, their internet went out and they had to start it over. After the update, the truck refuses to start! They called GM and nobody seems to know the problem. This was last Friday. He called me today ( Monday) and said that GM thinks something might have “let go” internally in the engine and the correlation to it happening after the update might be purely coincidental....

I was told by the tech that there have been some issues popping up with the V8, but at this point they are still diagnosing the problem. Running oil tests, etc.  I’m thankful at this point that it’s a lease and under warranty! At least I have a service loaner to drive.

Anyone else experience this issue?

I would put more money on one or more of the trucks computers being hooped during the failed update before deciding the motor "let go" internally...

incorrectly powering laptop from cig lighter could of shorted the puters'

Truck worked before the update; truck doesn't work after the update.......so, now they wonder what is the cause of the problem??????

Not aware of any recall on the '19 software, but yesterday received a recall notice on my traded '16 for the vacuum braking issue......hope they didn't try to force that on a '19.

When they updated my IOS with the Nav install the rev went from 8.01 to an older 5.09 version. Tech said when he called to register the Nav, that based on my VIN and installed options that was the proper version to install. I asked again at the last visit and Chevy verified that was the correct rev and advised against trying to force a later update. I've no complaints, everything including the Nav works great and no more Climate Off bug. When I try to update and  reads my VIN says it is the latest update......guess rev numbers really don't mean crap if everything is working 100%.

Likely the OP needs a new ECU with programming and accessory module learning which dealer is hesitant to do because it would be an admission to Chevy they screwed up and broke the system and may even have to eat the cost of the parts, time and labor.

Right. He looked at a few things on the shop computer when I came in, said there were two recalls, both computer related and that the truck needed to be reprogrammed. I didn’t think too much about it, I figured he is seeing it on the screen. It was my thinking that the internet outage caused a bad download and that when they called me today I fully expected to be told that they did a reset or whatever, did the download again and all was well . Not so much.

There is nothing wrong with the engine, the bricked the ECM. They will need to open a ticket with GM Tech support, as long as the dealer is honest with tech support they will get it sorted out. If they are trying to hide things in order to not eat some of the extra repair costs or labor from their goof up of "losing internet" during the install it will turn into a dog chasing its tail for days to weeks.

Like others have said they bricked your ecm more than likely, not sure why the tech would be installing the file off the internet, would think the logical and safe way to do it would be to have it already on a thumb drive or whatever handheld devices the techs use.  I wouldn't let them touch your engine as it sounds like they are trying to make excuses for their incompetence.

The dealer doesnt have an option to download the update. They connect the tech's laptop to the vehicle and then it goes out onto the GM global system and locates the needed files and downloads them and installs the files. Been doing it this was for years now from how I have seen some of the firmware updated on my GM vehicles.

Well, I got the truck back a couple of days ago and it’s running/ starting well. The dealer said that they found a worn bearing that had seized and somehow it was worn enough that the engine wouldn’t start. Apparently it really was a coincidence that it happened at the service appointment? Seems improbable but that’s what I’m told.

That sounds EXTREMELY unlikely.  I would suggest asking for a work order showing what work was performed on the truck.

Agreed. If they told me that I would have laughed  at them. Did they change the oil at the service?  I put my money on they started it with no oil in the engine accidentally and spun a bearing.
