Correct usage of HVAC

Hi,

I recently drove a longer distance with my 2014 silverado. (around 1000km). The problem is, I constantly need to adjust the temperature. I can`t just leave it on one temperature. I have everything on "Auto". When I set the temp to, for example 22°C, it constantly blows cold air, that I start to freeze, and when I set it to 23°C it constantly blows hot air. It is like you can either choose between waaay to hot or waaay to cold. Is there a failure, or am I doing something wrong?

Mine does the exact same thing. 72f (which is 22c) is cold air.  73 is hot air.

Any temperature setting other than "LO" blends in hot air. The amount of hot airflow depends how far you turn the temperature up. "HI" is fully hot, no cold air.

I consider "proper usage" to be setting it on LO and just change fan speed.

Well, then whats the point in having automatic climate control? I also had automatic climate control in my BMW and even in my old Opel. I almost never had to touch the temperature settings sometimes I haven´t touched them in weeks. I haven`t experienced this problem that much in summer, but now, that it`s cold, I constantly have to adjust the temperature. Like every 5 minutes or so. I can´t imagine that is how it`s supposed to work.

I only use auto and it works pretty good. In summer I set it between 65-70* and forget it.

in winter I set it to 75* and it warms up quick then I drop it to 73* and leave it there and it stays comfy

i too have noticed in mine the difference between cool air and warm air is 72-73*. At 72 it will start to blow cool and at 73 it blows warm.

This is basically what I do, exactly in winter. Works fine for me. I also notice 72-73 being the changing point between cool and warm air. But, it's still set it and forget it.

out of all the vehicles I've had that use auto climate control this truck is by far the worst.

I find that this system works well (even the back seat area).  The fluctuations in temperature are most noticeable when you have the dash air vents blowing at you.  Unless I need the defrost, I direct the air to the floor.  There is the possibility that you have a faulty temperature sensor that needs attention.  However, if periodically pushing a button in arms reach to achieve optimal comfort is an aggravation then life is pretty good!

Well periodically means every 2 - 3 minutes. It`s still not as bad as other things that could happen, but still, the product doesn`t meet it`s expectations.

How about water temperature. Whats it on your 5.3l typically when warm? Does it get warm and then stay on one temperature? (normal use, no heavy towing or driving constantly uphill etc). On my truck it constantly changes between the 3rd mark and the 5th mark (210°F).

Auto here in FL lets the cab get way too humid. The humidity builds up, and requires colder, drier air to take care of that.

The sensors in there, like the thermostat in your house, ONLY looks at temperature.

That doesn't tell the entire story. Auto at 75 sometimes feels great, other times your arm sticks to the door panel.

As such, I don't use auto.

My 11 Genesis, 14 GMC, 15 Santa Fe all worked fine on auto. They would max out to cool and turn down when at set temperature, even in south Texas. Setting to manual max didn’t change the quick response in any of those vehicles.

I am not a big fan of using the AUTO setting... it takes a toll on the actuators as they continuously adjust the warm are mix.

Auto rules. Wouldn't have a vehicle without. 74 degrees in the winter, 72-3 in summer. Almost never change any setting unless I need defrost. Works as expected on my Silverado and Equinox.

It is very possible that you have a faulty HVAC system. Maybe it would be worthwhile to take it to a shop for a diagnosis and estimate.  I appreciate that HVAC repairs are notorious for being costly but hopefully you'll discover otherwise!   Your engine temperature concern is something I haven't noticed.  It makes sense that there should be some movement within the safe range otherwise the gauge  is no improvement over a warning light.  I will monitor mine and see if I have a similar experience.

Yeah, the temperatur constantly changes, it`s within the limits, but still. I just know from all the cars I had before, once the engine reached its operating temperature, it stayed there like being glued (And if it didn`t, it had to be extremely hot, or anything was broken). Maybe it`s possible to "reset" the HVAC, to have the sensors and postions relearned. The problem is that it is hard to find a GM dealer at all, and even harder to find one thats familiar with the US chevys. But would be great if anyone could take a look if their temperature also changes slightly all the time.
