A Heads Up On Transmissions Read Hear Before Buying/Ordering

If you have the opportunity to order or buy a truck with the 10 speed DO IT!  Spend the extra money or get the diesel option as I did it’s worth it.

After having my 2019 repurchased by GM for the 2WD jingle squeal issue from the front axels I chose a 3.0L diesel that automatically comes with the 10 speed. I do believe the 10 speed can now be ordered with the gas engine on LT and a couple other models for 2020 as an extra cost option. Just do yourself a favor and get the 10 speed you won’t regret it. It’s just so much better and smoother than the 8 speed it’s not even funny.

Agree 100%!  The 10-speed is a wonderful transmission.  Mine is mated to the 6.2L.  Came from a 2017 5.3L with the 6 speed.  No comparison, not even close.  Make Driving Great Again!  Get the 10 speed.

Ahhh but I’m getting almost 30 mpg with the 3.0 that’s almost 100% better mileage than GMs gasoline offerings with the 8 speed. I was on average of 16 mpg with my 2019 and the 5.2 V8 mated to the A8. I’ll make sure I don’t paint my truck with diesel fuel, thanks for the advice.

My 8 speed 5.3 is as smooth as silk, it's the new version referred to earlier with the Mobil 1

And, I just got 25 mpg on the last tank Inran with 93 octane.  That being said, the 10 speed is better, but the 8 speed is mighty nice too. 20200117_162632.thumb.jpg.11d2cdf51dd5c65ad9be710acb4d48b2.jpg

What's wrong Larry? Dont like what ya see?

Just regular driving my friend. Even got on her a couple a times , passing people.

Seriously,  she gets 22-23 with 89.

p.s. downhill 45 mph for 503 miles would be hard to do, dont ya think? :)

My 5.3 8 spd shifts smooth while driving, but have a problem with it slamming into reverse with a  bang. Sometimes it’s just a small clunk, and sometimes it hitS hard and shakes the whole truck. Don’t know if it’s transfer case, trans, or slack in the rear diff. Not really a jerk, but more the sound of gears slamming together. Never does it going into drive, only in reverse.

That's strange.  Mine has never done that going into reverse gear. Although, I do sometimes, like early in the morning, get the occasional clunk from going from 1st to 2nd. But, that's when I dont let her warm up.

I think I would have the delaer look at that reverse gear.

Tomcat again you do realize there are other trim levels other than the RST? I mean heaven forbid someone want a truck that isn’t a quad cab with a super cool “sport bar”, edgy pinstripe and all the off road lights one could hope to have with 22” wheels.

In the SLT trim the Duramax is a 2495 option same as the Elevation, AT4 and Denali.

Yes I understand that this is a new engine and it’s not proven yet. It could be a complete turd. We won’t know for a few years. But you also can’t say it’s unreliable

3.0 isn’t for you and that’s OK. But stop with your negativity about it and diesel in general. Not everyone lives where it’s -30F. Do the new emissions suck? Yeah they sure do but it is what it is. Currently where I live diesel is .08 more than premium and .30 more than 87 octane. So if someone was cross shipping the 6.2 and the 3.0 the 3.0 would be much cheaper as a DD. If they were cross shopping  the 5.3, not so much. But they would get more tq and the 10 speed which some people might want or need.

I agree with you but I'll reiterate that you can get the 10 speed with a 5.3 in a Sierra, LT TB or HC.

Quite the opposite, I love what I see...

The list of applicable vehicles (for this discussion) my wife and I have owned or used as company cars can be found below. As you will see I am no stranger to GM's V8s. Problem is, not a single one of them has ever come close to 25MPG over a 500 mile stretch. I would say the 2018 Yukon was probably the closest at approximately 22.5MPG. First 3 possible reasons I can think of as to why we haven't achieved as high of MPG as you 1) you got a special one 2) your driving habits/environment are ideal for gas mileage, or 3) I need to relearn how to drive. It is obviously possible to achieve ~25MPG over a 500 miles stretch as you have shown, but personally the only way I am going to achieve that is to drive <60MPH on flat roads with little to no traffic. I am not patient enough to drive like that... Regardless, congrats! I am jealous.

Owned

2008 5.3 Silverado LTZ z71 4 speed

2015 5.3 Silverado LTZ z71 3.42 6 speed

2016 5.3 Silverado Midnight LTZ z71 3.42 8 speed

2018 5.3 Sierra All Terrain 3.42 8 speed

2019 5.3 Sierra AT4 3.23 8 speed (current)

All crew cab short beds except for the 2008 which was an extended cab standard bed

Company vehicles (wife)

2017 6.2 Yukon Denali XL 4x4 8 speed

2017 6.2 Yukon Denali XL 4x4 8 speed

2018 5.3 Yukon SLT 4x4 8 speed

2018 6.2 Sierra SLT z71 8 speed (current)

Note - without doing some research I am not sure what rear ends my wife's company vehicles or the 2008 Silverado had. Also, there were no modifications done to any of the vehicles except for the 2015 Silverado which I put slightly larger tires on shortly after purchase. I believe they were 275 65 r18.

I did take it to the dealer about this and, of course, when i got up there it was doing the soft clunk and not the hard one. They said it was normal, and when i told them about how its usually alot worse, they seemed to believe me but acted like i shouldnt worry about it. On the print out they gave me, it said they recommend  that i wait a couple seconds after start up before i shift to reverse, to let the rpms settle down, which i always do anyway. i usually let i warm up a while before i take off.  It doesnt matter if i wait 10 seconds or 5 minutes, it still does it. I only have about 1500 miles on it so far, so im hoping it will smooth out as it breaks in.

while you're at it also the GM manufactured front axle (RPO code- F48 - CHASSIS DRIVE LINE-FOUR WHEEL DRIVE(4WD) FWI - PLANT CODE FT WAYNE, IN, USA) that doesn't jingle like the alternative from a non GM aftermarket supplier.

Not to high-jack this thread. Could you expand on front axle?

Larry,  I live in the highest living elevation in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Up and down and curvy. Hardly flat. Listen, I'm not the only one getting this kind of mpg in the new 2019 5.3 8 speed. Mine is also a Crew Cab 4x4 Z71

Chevy nailed it with DFM. They are pretty dang awesome imo.

Mine did this twice- both times it was because I hadn’t stopped FULLY before shifting into reverse.

The tranny flips the f out if you are

moving forward even a little bit while shifting into reverse. Lol.

my 8 spd has been great, another 2 gears wouldn't hurt but still its pretty friggen smooth.....I like 6.2 tho…..I drove my 05 Toyota for 15 yrs and got like 14mpg at best mostly around 12mpg, so I am stoked with anything better....I could run a 6.6 V8 and still probably do better than Toyota......next truck a 2500 V8 for sure tho, I changed my mind last minute to 1500 and shouldn't have.....

only time my tranny hits lil hard is if I don't warm it up or get to quick to throw into a gear....which is my fault, if I do it properly no worries and on road driving its smooth as butter

at 7k probably not even broken in yet.....I do not like fact I don't have dipstick for tranny tho

I just yesterday filled my truck with diesel. Regular was $2.79 a gallon diesel was 2.83.
