Up North Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 Brand New 2020 Z-71 Trail Boss: We just purchased the truck from the David Kring dealership in Petoskey, MI and have had an interesting first run of events. Drove the truck south to Birch Run (less than 250 miles) and began to smell something like burnt rubber. Got off the exit and pulled in to a gas station to witness the smoke coming out through the grill. Immediately went to the local dealer and they tried for four hours to determine the issue. Nothing. So, after meetings there, headed back north and by 325 miles on the odometer, the Check Engine light came on. Now, we're concerned. Did not trust it and had Kring pick it up. Very good service manager, Theron, came back with the ECU not communicating with the other computers. Re-set the computer and said that these things happen. Well, being a gearhead with a LOT of cars and boats, I said BS. This isn't supposed to happen with a new vehicle. He said to go ahead and drive it, it's still under warranty. Nope. I decided to detail it and parked it as I have NO faith in this truck and am suspect that there is more going on with this piece. Any one out there experienced these or similar issues? Hate to pay this kind of money for a new truck that most certainly will turn out to be a real lemon..............and this coming from a guy who's had Suburbans since '72. Thoughts?
davester Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 So, they didn't find where the smoke/burning rubber was happening for the initial problem?
Jim E Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 The only way to prove it's a lemon is to keep driving it and have it towed back to the dealer every time it fails (assuming it does).
snork Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 3 days right of refusal, not a chance in hell I'd want to keep it

I know that’s a thing on home equity loans etc but didn’t know that was a thing on vehicles.
ShamrockShooter Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 In my state there is no cooling off period on new cars. Soon as you sign the papers it's yours. Trust me when I went out the first morning and discovered my soaking wet back seat I tried like hell to return it. NopeSent from my Pixel 4 using Tapatalk
bshort Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 Detail it and park it........that'll get it fixed.

Not at either dealer. My son spent four hours at the dealership in Birch Run and under the hood with two techs. Showed them the video and again, nothing found.

If he's not happy with one outrageously over priced POS he can take it back to exchange it for another outrageously over priced POS. lol
Up North Posted February 27, 2020 Author Posted February 27, 2020 Going back into the dealer but this time on a trailer. When it started a bit ago, the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and stayed that way. Give me roll up windows and manual locks again.......
Up North Posted February 27, 2020 Author Posted February 27, 2020 Dude, this is a brand new 2020 Z-71 Trail Boss, with six miles on it when we took it home. We’re not talking about some old rusted out POS truck here.
brianf60 Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 I would do my best to pull in front of the show room at the dealer the next time it happens and leave it sitting there with smoke billowing out while you go in, have a leak, grab a free coffee then make your way over to the service department. I have found in other cases when the public shaming is threatening there ability to complete other sales they all of a sudden are very interested in resolving your concerns....
Jim E Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 Park in the service bay area running while you go in to discuss how "it's normal" for a new truck to catch fire inside their building.
greco2003 Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 It’s under warranty I can understand being mad but that’s why it comes with a warranty so if something is wrong they fix it. Now if it’s been there enough times to be lemmoned then Lemmon it. Sucks it happened but it can happen with anything.
