I’ve seen a migration towards more of a celebration of life rather than the whole viewing, funeral, graveyard service. Seeing people having to stand in line while people give condolences is excruciating for love ones. My wife’s grandparents donated their bodies. My father wanted to burned as he put it, make no damn fuss he said. My mother expressed the same. My wife and I are doing the same. The ashes what ever. Have a gathering if desired. Please use a photo of my 30s. Preferably with my wife.

Heard a term the other day that's my favorite to replace "can't take it with you."  "Ever see a hearse towing a U-Haul trailer?"

Twice yesterday I heard someone comment that, "Its hell getting old".   This is a really stupid comment. imo.  I suspect every adult has experienced a loved one who didn't make it to their senior years of life.  There is one alternative to getting old and I truly appreciate that I'm lucky to be taking the getting old option.  The theme of this thread has related to what we do with our time. There are many age appropriate and fulfilling things to do at every stage of our lives.  Time spent being bitter about what we can't do serves no purpose.  This spring I was researching the latest and greatest new lawn mowers to replace my 15 yr old Home Depot special.   Mrs. Donstar was not so subtle in reminding me how cutting the lawn took away such a major part of the day and often left my body "hungover" for the rest of the day.  She went on to explain how many professional lawn cuts we could get for the cost of a new lawnmower.  She cinched the deal by telling me about the extra free time I'd have to enjoy my trike!

Being in a family business with its ups and downs life’s full enjoyment didn’t start for me until 58, retirement. Yes of course I had fun prior. Life’s responsibilities was always there. Getting the kids raise and them starting their paths is stressful to parents. Having a business is kinda on the same plain. Throw in a little OCD makes it all fun. Having a little pain of getting old, moving a little slower is worth the trade. Having 95 percent control instead of 1, is priceless. Eight years in and loving it.

You're a wise man to listen to your Mrs., Donstar!  About 7 years ago I purchased a new JD lawn tractor so I could ride instead of push as I was beginning to have back problems even tho my yard isn't that large. This worked well until last year until the arthritis in my back worsened to the point that hefting my propane powered weed whacker became the real issue. I could still use the lawn tractor if I wanted but the ancillaries such as weed whacking and edging are a no go now. I was fortunate enough to find a guy who is both reliable and inexpensive. He does this as a sideline to his full time job at Lowes, which is an added bonus for me because if I need Roundup or ant killer he can pick that up for me saving me a trip to the store.

I bought a tractor when we moved to this 1/2 acer space and loved it. Then about 5 years ago my back started giving me fits. Keep me in bed for days sometimes. Seemed I was circling the drain. Doc mentions to me that walking is good for not just the heart but the entire body.

By chance one evening I was watch a football game and saw Drew Brees doing his pregame stretch and was amazed how limber this guy is. I mention this to Doc next visit and I get the entire 411 on the topic. Doc is same age as I. Sitting is a back killer. Those bands of tendons from your quad to pelvis shrink and put a vise on the spine. So I started stretching and walking behind a Honda self propelled about two years ago. Takes me three hours if done in one shot. Perfect? No, but not a single day lost in bed in two years either and a fraction of the trips to Doc. Next day body hangover? Yea....a bit stiff but a good stretch and a cuppa put me right pretty quick.

That first week was awful and I'll never be able to put the sole of my foot on the back of the opposite shoulder blade like Drew but boy is it nice to not be in constant pain. Pain...THAT was a waste of time.

Haven't rode that tractor in 2 years.

In this stance I put my right hand on a coffee table or chair for balance and stretch the hip of the leg with knee on the ground with my back straight as possible or even arched back. A few minutes each side first thing in the morning. That lower lumbar pain just melts away.

I agree that walking behind my self propelled lawn mower is healthy exercise and was something I enjoyed.  All of the other tasks connected with "cutting the grass" is the disagreeable stuff!   Since we sub-contracted my yard responsibilities my daily step count has not suffered.   Over the past several years, I've recorded my daily step count as part of my evening routine.  Any downward trends are quickly rectified or acceptably rationalized!

I hate yard work. I love the results of doing it myself. I’m replacing tools to make the chore easier. I’ve seen the results of use it or lose it. There’s a different between tiredness and pain. Work out pain  and hurting pain. There’s one job I had to quit doing with my extended hedge trimmer. It took too long to recover. Not doing it all at once was the key.

I asked my doctor about the step count frenzy. The question was how many and pushing through discomfort. If I walk too much the hips and knees complain loudly. Four thousand is the threshold. His answer was move every hour. And my number was more than enough.

Looks like in my spare time I'll be getting a tooth implant instead of having a crown installed. Got a tooth that has a crack in it. That's about 4 grand out the window

Without a crown there will be a gap in the smile, implant is below the gum.  Had an implant back in Feb, it takes at least 3 to 6 months to heal if a crown is installed.  Absolutely no pain for the implant, didn't require and meds.  Although results may vary, easier if a tooth is extracted, the surgeon can use the open space vs cutting in a gum without a hole.  Going to schedule for the crown, 4500 for implant and crown.

    • There are probably a few threads talking about fuel mileage but this one seemed to fit the stats I have seen based on my typical local driven route but with different outcomes based on different seasons/temperatures. I have a few hundred pounds of items that consistently ride on the truck at all times such as a bak flip cover, rubber bed mat, tools and extra fuel so I would be something over 8100 lb without me in the truck. All these examples are based on a 100 mile round trip to a town plus running around town so maybe 110 to 120 miles in total for a trip. Using regular fuel and I assume it always has some ethanol in it but don't know the percentage they blend in. Also speed wise I am going at 62 mph and non aggressive driving although less speed yet if its crappy winter condition roads. I am going by an initial reset of the computer generated fuel use numbers averaged over a couple of thousand miles or so for each weather/season so they may be more optimistic then actual hand calculated numbers. Basically this is painting a picture of doing the same drive but seasonal conditions and temperature being the major variable to the end result. Oh and although I am in Alberta Canada, I am converting it to miles per US gallon so there is no confusion.    So winter time it gets cold here, no real surprise there and the roads can be clear at times but also often have packed rough snow or are are driving through loose snow ( they do a poor job of plowing the highways ) and yes this includes the extra idle engine time due to trying not to freeze ones butt off. 12.7 mpg is what I was getting during the winter months on average.    Then during the spring when it was around the freezing point and the highways are clear of snow, I was getting around 14.25 mpg.   Summer time, I have been getting around 15.15 on average but certainly some of the trips showed quite a bit better fuel mileage, so much depended on how much or little I had driven around town and number of engine restarts after sitting for a while at each location. But stating a best fuel mileage trip to town pretending that is what the truck gets on average is fooling ones self for sure !.      As I said in a different post, I had driven a 645 mile trip over a couple of days stint to a different destination then these other daily to town examples above, and was done during the summer with nice weather and not bucking a head wind, also keeping at 62 mph and its a rolling landscape type highway drive ( this isn't southern Alberta or Saskatchewan flat lands ) Hand calculated fuel mileage in this case though and it came out to 17.65
    • On my wife's 2020 Blazer (~69000 miles), we started to notice the brakes pulsating at faster speeds. Typically around town you don't notice anything, but highway/interstate driving you will notice it. I decided to pull of the front tires and look at the brakes. I figured with the milage, the pads should be wearing out to their life span, but they actually looked decent. Still with "meat" on them. One pad has a ridge wearing in it, and that same rotor is showing the ridge too. That's not the concerning part...the other rotor appears to have a raised bump on it!  The picture make it look like a pimple! Very odd and strange! NOTE: These are the factory brakes and rotors.   I'm attaching pictures of the front brakes and what they look like ate ~69000 miles.
