I purchased a 2020 GMC AT4 3500 in September of 2019, since day 1 my brakes have squealed, squeaked, whatever you want to call it. I paid over $75,000 for this garbage track and the brakes make obnoxious noises and frankly it is emabarrassing!! I took it to a local GMC dealer who said....take a guess.....There is nothing mechanically wrong with the brakes and they could not replicate the noises, BS. I brushed it off and around February I ordered new brake pads and decided to do it myself, well the pads were the wrong ones and I have not been able to find an aftermarket set to this date. Since a year has now gone by I decided to go to another dealer because I found a service bulletin on this website (THANK YOU!) # 20-NA-020 that looked like my ticket to getting rid of this simple problem. Well I took it in and guess what the lazy "salesman" service guy said....yes, the same f'ing thing, there is nothing mechanically wrong with your brakes, however they are overheating and we can replace them for $700!!!! They squeak when it is cold most of the time! I have owned Chevy's, GM's for over 30 years and this will be the last time, I hope this stirs the pot and others realize how stupid these service centers are, yes I am sure Ford and others are the same but seriously there is a service bulletin for this that clearly states what the remedy is and they know that! This is ridiculous like the other posters have said about these brakes. $75,000 and my daughters $20,000 Honda Civic is less embarrassing to drive.

There is a TSB authorizing dealers to replace pads under warranty for this...

Looks like I'll have to get this done on mine, they tend to squeal at low speeds especially in drive throughs.  Although I'm not sure I want them to just replace pads and do nothing to the rotors.

Silverado HD/Sierra HD Brake Squeal

Some 2020 Silverado 2500/3500 and Sierra 2500/3500 models may have a brake squeal condition caused by the low scorch friction material used on the original brake pads.

New brake pads are available that have a high scorch friction material to reduce the potential for noise. Replace the front and rear brake pads with the new pads.

 

TIP: Each brake pad has an Inner or Outer label to indicate where it should be installed. (Fig. 6)

If the pads are replaced and the squeal sound continues, check the orientation of the pads. If the inboard and outboard designation on the pads indicate the pads are installed in the wrong location, the squeal sound may persist.

Keep in mind that only the left side of the truck has the wear sensors, which are mounted on the inner pad. (Fig. 7)

I had mine replaced today per the TSB, they really don't need to turn the rotors unless there is a groove or uneven wear.  Mine where smooth so they didn't turn them.

I'm dealing with this same issue. Sure am glad I checked this forum... was about to order some new pads and saw the TSB about this. Calling the dealer tomorrow.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm well versed in this saga.  As I'm not sure that the replacement brakes are any better than the original ones...  I've had my 2020 AT4 replaced twice (front & rear) and embarrassed to go back for a third time as the brakes still squeak.  

 

Hoping for aftermarket options that may be better, as I REALLY like the truck, if the brakes were quiet.

yeah the pad materials are mostly the culprit of the noise, which probably performs better than the 1500 brakes, better bite.. even racing brakes are loud and squeeky, its a trade off in performance and fade resistance

So I have a 2020 Sierra HD with this same problem. According to the dealership, this is NOT covered under the bumper to bumper warranty and is ONLY covered for 7,500 miles regardless of any service bulletins.  . Well my truck has 21,908 miles and guess its my fault for not taking it in sooner thinking I had 3 years / 36,000 miles for any "manufacture defects" to be corrected. Very disappointed however, I would like someone to verify this is true and not just the dealership being...... how can I say it nicely...... "ill-informed"....... Hate feeling like this dealership is trying to not do the work for whatever the reason.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
