I am torn between which truck I should get and would like your opinion, 

I am thinking of purchasing the 4x4 RST crew cab with Z71 package to get 4lo, adding 17inch rims and AT tires  along with upgrading suspension w/ 2-3inch lift, which i suspect to cost me 4 to 5k. I believe that this is the better route because I can make the truck the way I want it to look with a better suspension for about the same price as the trail boss. CONS i would probably lose all warranty on the truck and I am worried that lifting it my cause more wear and tear on certain components. I could buy the GM 2 inch lift, but I mine as well had bought the trail boss. I also would be getting the 8 speed in the RST instead of the 10 speed in the trail boss. 

OR 

Just buy the trail boss? 

I plan on using the truck as occasionally going to the snow/ light off roading, and daily driver (8 to 10k miles per year)

Thoughts?

In my opinion the 10 speed is way better than the 8 speed. I had a 5.3 with the 8 speed and it was always cluncking from 1 to 2. 
 

i have the 10 speed now on the 3.0l diesel RST and it is so much smoother.

If I had a choice at the time, I would have gone with the 10 speed as well, but 2020+ 8 speeds are great and have had zero issues, it appears they finally got it right.  Mine runs like butter and I rarely feel a shift, even then I have to be paying attention, its just so smooth. 

 

First, the only difference in suspension between the Trailboss/AT4 and the nons are the shocks, extended CV's, and rear blocks.  The springs are the same, so the only true suspension component that is different are the shocks.  The extended CV's are nice if your going to be doing 4+ inches of lift, but not needed for 2-3 inches of lift.  So, the only real difference that is notable if your going to be lifting a stock truck to trail boss height is the shock and rear block.  $1200 is crazy expensive for shocks and rear blocks, especially when they are only considered OK and not great.  There are cheaper and much better quality shocks out there.   Bilstein makes an adjustable shock that is superior to the factory Trail Boss Ranchos and is considerably better performing.  The Eibach Pro Truck lift upgrades shocks and springs(which the Trail Boss  factory option doesn't) and is adjustable up to 3 inch ($500-$600).  There are many cheaper and considerably better value options than the factory Trail Boss lift so don't feel obligated to go that route as an option if you purchase a non Trail Boss.

 

As for wheels, you can find Trail Boss and AT4 wheel and tire take offs on craigslist and facebook market place all day long for $1,100 - $1,200 in like new condition.  I purchased brand new take off 18" AT4 wheels WITH Duratracs for $800 this past Friday (a steal, I doubt you will find a set that cheap and it took me forever to find them) so it can be done for relatively cheap.

 

I have approximately $600 in a suspension that includes adjustable height shocks and springs, and $800 in AT4 wheels and tires for a total of $1.400.  That gets me the stance of the Trail Boss/AT4, with 18' wheels and tires, but with a much better on-road handling suspension.  I have not had the pleasure of driving a Trail Boss off-road so I cant compare off-road capabilities, but my stock Z71 suspension was good off-road so I would imagine that the Trail Boss suspension would be equally as good or better.

 

Good luck with your choice, either way you will have a smile on your face and an awesome truck in your driveway!

I have owned both the 8 speed and now the 10 speed, and I can't say enough how much of a difference this 10 speed makes.  I love it.  I would go TB route on that difference alone.

Drive them both and see which one you like better. What look do you prefer? The Trail Boss had a blacked out grill and red tow hooks along with decals and different floor mats. The RST grill is the same as the body color. 

The 10 speed is an awesome transmission! The shifts remind me of my old DMax I had with an Allison. Very precise and quick.

I actually liked my 8 speed more than my current 10 speed. 

 

I lifted/leveled my RST 1.5" with a top mount spacer.  It's 39 1/4" in the front to top of fender.  After measuring about 10 Trail Boss's, it seems about the same height in the front.  Mine now sits at about 39 1/4" at all fours.

I went with the 2020 RST Z71 and love my truck, it’s smooth as I could ever expect from a truck and came with 18” wheels. I looked at some TB’s but they cost around $10,000 more and I just couldn’t do that

I have a 2021 RST z71 texas edition, am very happy with it and the 6.2L/10 speed. I installed aftermarket wheels and 285/70/17 BFG KO2’s. Didn’t modify suspension at all. Drives like butter, and no warranty issues

RST Trucks are much cheaper in my area. The 8 speed works well in mine. A Z71 Rst is going to be very capable. What about an RST with a 6.2?

I drove both with the 6.2/10spd when I was shopping and ended up with the RST. I thought it rode better and was quieter. Plus I was able to find a double cab RST with the 6.2 and I prefer a double cab anyways. 

 

As a side note, I detail cars on the side and I'm very particular about how mine look. I love the look of the black front bumper on the TB but all I could think about was how hard it would be to keep swirls and scratches out of, especially on the front.

You could installed 3m clear Film on the Bumper , Mirror Caps, 8" on front of grill .

I am currently driving a 2021 RST Silverado with 6.2L and 10 speed and also running in 17 inch wheels, while my High Country is getting fixed.  It’s a nice truck, rides nice in the 17s, and it is really quiet.  I’d get this instead of a Trailboss just because I like street trucks better than off road trucks.  Don’t get me wrong, I think the trailboss’ are b@d@SS looking, just not my cup of tea.

    • I thought I would use your thread and add to it as I just did my first longer drive with my truck in the last couple of days. I drove from the Grande Prairie area of Alberta down to Edmonton and most of where I drove in the city was the ring road so fairly free flowing but a bit of stop and go as well in the city. Stayed the night and returned home and not too many stops along the way each way but every restart and certainly every cold start sets it back for fuel mileage. Why I say that is I see some people will cherry pick a fuel mileage leg after the vehicle had been warmed up driveline wise before hand and its a forgiving ( easy rolling drive leg for example ) and call that their fuel mileage which can give a false perception of reality. I was not heavily loaded at all but never the less the flip bak cover, rubber bed mat, various tools etc and extra jerry cans of fuel all way up to a few hundred pounds of dead weight so its not an empty truck. The cold inflation tire pressures are set more near the freezing point so once they are warmed up driving I was showing 45 front and over 40 rear and realize high inflation pressures would help a little in fuel mileage but certainly not the ride on our crap sections of highway. The weather was good so was not raining as that can really drag mileage down, in fact I had a bit of a tail wind on average driving home. Most people on here would never have driven on that freeway to visualize it but its got a fair bit of rolling type of landscape with numerous river valleys. For the most part I had it on cruise set to 62 although kicking it off if I caught it in time before it started down shifting and self braking going down the grades. Most of the more substantial grades its shifting into 7th I believe as 8th just doesn't have it. Total distance round trip was 643 miles and my overall average and I did refuel three times in all, figured out to 17.65 miles per US gallon. My best fuel mileage section refuel within all of this figured out to 18.46 and these are all hand calculated figures. I find if anything that the trucks computer can be over optimistic, sometimes its pretty close but other times its stretching it. On paper persay in theory the truck would have just about made it on fumes for that whole drive without refueling once.    Which made me think of the topic thread of the wonder if these trucks could do 20 mpg and that is a good question, certainly would have to be on an easy going flat highway, no head wind, the right temperature, not packing around a bunch of dead weight and puttering along even slower than I was I would suspect and going steady and not stopping to smell the flowers or take a piss !. It probably is possible but not without effort to attain that with the wind resistance and weight of these trucks. Of course on my drive most people are passing me if they have the power as per loaded highway tractors, never mind a lot of speedy vehicles but the speed limit is 68 and most are at or well over that.

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
