Hey all!  The most “upgraded” suspension I’ve ever had is the Ranchos on my 2020 X31 Elevation.  I had leveled my F150 FX4 before I got this truck, and had no issues with the ride quality.  In all honesty, the ranchos ride much better than any truck I’ve had before, even my wife agrees.  With that said, I want to level this truck, but am back and forth on the spacer vs the bilsteins all around.  Is it really THAT noticeable?  I know it’s not a million bucks, but 60 vs 500 Ish is a pretty drastic swing.

They're an excellent value proposition:  they're tuned right & built like a tank for what you pay.  They last forever, comparatively speaking.  I did the 5100s on my K2, no regrets.

5100's are the best struts for the money. But not sure most who want a level want a "Bilstein 5100 ride." They are off-road oriented shocks. Compared to the Ranchos they will give you an much "stiffer" & "planted" ride. If you are looking for a "better ride." You should define what "better" looks like for your vehiicle. The stock Ranchos are absolute garbage but are on the "extremely soft" side of struts. 

 

Another EXTREMELY IMPORTANT factor of the equation is what springs are you running. The stock springs are EXTREMELY soft. Aftermarket springs are going to give you that firm, planted feel, with less travel off-road. It all depends on what you are going to do/want. For all intents and purposes the "soft" suspension is what 80% of people want and are ultimately disappointed when they install an "off-road suspension."

 

FWIW if you want to actually upgrade your suspension you should replace:

 

Front Struts

Springs

Extended End Links

Rear Shocks

Upper Control Arms

Yes.   Yes they are.   I get a new truck every 2 years/ish.   100K miles every 2 years.   I've had very suspension GM offers... Ranchos (3) times.   Once I left them because I was not aware of the Bilsteins.   My last (2) trucks I swapped and LOVED them... About to do it to this this truck as well.  Do it... Makes the truck feel more stable... you will still get articulation, but are you really going to off road the truck anyway?   They are properly tuned.

*** and you will have a longer shock for the level/lift and the correct amount of travel.   The shock will not be pushed to its limit.

Placebo effect, akin to a "CAI" actually accomplishes something more than makes noise.

Save your $ buy Bitcoin instead.

Bilstein's are much better than Rancho's one road and off.  I have had them on several vehicles and pulled my Ranchos off for them with only a few thousand miles on them.  Farther up the shock range, I have reservoir Fox's on my Jeep and have driven a few trucks and SUV's with King's.  SOS, you get what you pay for.

Bilsteins are better than Ranchos for sure, but I like the Eibachs better than the Bilsteins and you get upgraded springs as well.  Check at the Eibach Pro Truck lift, it includes 4 shocks and 2 springs.  The ride characteristics are top noch, and I say that with the acknowledgment that I've been a Bilstein "fan boy" the last 20 years.

i checked eibach and they say something different about sierra than silverado.....wonder if anyone has done a eibach kit for sierra.....have to believe its same plus i live really close to them and can have them do it

 

bilstein uses digressive valving ( lcon)

eibach uses progressive valving ( king, fox, and most others)

 

not a right or wrong way just different methods of valving

 

can see where a progressive setup would be a bit more forgiving for DD...

I think this is what a lot of people probably don't think about, and...despite ME wanting a more firm, planted ride, and this feel, I think my 3 daughters and wife would complain to high heaven on 12 hr drives on vacation...or 30 min drives to and from sports each day, lol.  They are "garbage" but what most people want?  Is there a happy medium somewhere, lol?

 

At this point I'm leaning towards the top mounted spacer and calling it a day, as despite the ranchos being "garbage", which I assumed they were, my wife got in when I bought it and said "OMG, this rides SOOOOO much nicer than your F150 FX4", so your point is totally well taken.

springs basically just hold up the vehicle weight.....all the dampening is or should be done with the shock, you want to run lightest springs you need to hold up the truck (if you have winch, steel bumpers, or equipment) than they should be little stiffer.....if you are feeling the springs its not because the springs are too soft or too stiff (doubtful they are too stiff) its because the shock has improper dampening abilities....you should not feel the springs in proper set of shocks.......springs hold up the vehicle at ride height and thats their only job....if you overspring a vehicle and have little dampening in shock the spring will over take the shocks capacity......but believe most companies have that already figured into their coilover packages unless your running extra weight, if you are tell them and they may want you to go 700lb spring vs a 600lb or whatever case may be

 

get correct shock with ability to dampen the forces  and type of driving you do ( will be a compromise if DD and slamming it offroad)...if not no worries

 

no shock has ability to do both extremely well, its just not possible even with clickers (fine tune).....and springs offer no dampening characteristics....without dampening of a shock they just pogo up and down forever.....

Trucks are hard if you treat the suspension system like a truck. How many cars do you ask to carry a ton in the trunk? If you ignore it's truck function it gets easier both on and off road. Yes if you bought to primarily tow or haul near the limit then skip this post. 

 

Dunn nails the springs function but that is one of three parts. Dampening and............and.........travel!! 

 

Enough travel for your largest deflection, Enough spring to put the shock around 50% travel. Enough dampening to stroke the shock 90% of it's travel at 90% of your expected normal speed. Play with that. It will come to you. 

 

BTW, King OEM are quite linear as delivered in dampening. 😉

I always have a bad case of scope creep so  I ended up with front 6112’s and rear 5160’s instead of 5100’s all around. Was going to get King 2.5’s but the wait was just way too long for me. 
 

The Bilsteins accomplished EXACTLY what I was wanting. I couldn’t be happier with them and I’m happier every time I drive my truck. My wife even commented how much better the ride felt to her. 
 

These replaced the OEM Z71 Ranchos. I was unhappy with how they felt over the pot holes, rough road sections, and speed bumps I encounter every day. The Bilsteins feel much better going over these. As well as much better on the highway in sections when the truck would previously feel “floaty”. The truck now settles quicker and I feel more in control. They are firmer which accomplishes this however they are NOT stiff at all. 
 

Is the Bilstein hype real? I would answer that with a resounding yes.

In my particular instance, I'm looking to only replace the shocks to eliminate the bounce issue and wheel hop in the rear. I have a '19 LTZ 4x4 without the Z71 package. Driving around DFW there are lots of dips it seems and the truck seems to bounce harshly and float for an eternity. I'm curious if upgrading to Bilstein's at all 4 corners only would suffice, or if other upgrades would also be necessary? No hardcore off roading planned, just looking to settle the ride down and stabilize it. Def appreciate any input!

    • 286,740 Mile Services   8/6/2026   New AC Compressor. Refrigerant oil and dye, evacuate and charge system.  New exhaust system from cat back.  New Iridium plugs plus replace #3 coil Repair/rewire headlamp wiring (passenger side) and replace all forward bulbs. Polish lenses of both assemblies.  Pull rear rotors, clean and adjust parking assembly. Inspect, clean and grease front calipers. Check pads and shoes.  4 wheel power bleed of brake system. Dot 4 Reset idle speed 50 rpm higher New Serpentine belt.    Will need new pads in the rear in about 5K more miles.    Tax Title and License out the door just short of a grand.    AC clutch had bitten the dust. 1 year warranty on the pick and save replacement. Thing will make a Polar Bear cry Uncle.  He spent quite some time on the wiring. It was in the harness and he does nothing half. I got off cheap. I have considerable more light down the road. Sylvania Silver Star replacements.  Gas seal between the porcelain and shell of plug #3 was blown, cooked the coil. That was the cold miss.  Love the new exhaust. I can sneak into the neighborhood again.  Nice to have a working parking brake again. Belle Tire never got it done. That was disappointing.    This was one of her bigger bills and still way cheaper than a payment even given the oil consumption. This thing cost me under a hundred a month in repairs and normal routine costs. What is my incentive to replace it? 🤔           
    • hello I recently bought a 2012 gmc 1500 with a 5.3 and have a AFM disabler on it I'm interested in doing a cam but I'm worried if I remove the AFM system I will fail smog does anyone have info if they are able to detect that or a work around to it (not talking about hot smogging) please let me know thank you  
    • Update. I started chasing down my symptoms. Started first with pulling valve covers and looked at everything. Everything looked good and couldn't hear or feel anything different. Then a compression test. 240 psi or really close on each cylinder. I was worried I was a tooth off of timing. Not bad for an engine with 173,000. Granted I did put new heads on. I sprayed water around the injector area to see if I could hear a change. Nothing. I hooked up my new hp tuner which I should have done in the first place but I don't really know what I'm looking at just yet but am learning. I noticed the fuel trims were way off so that told me I have to have either a bad injector or exhaust leak. New injectors, so I did the shop vac on blower and in the tail pipe. Sprayed soapy water and found the exhaust flange on the drivers side was leaking. I didn't think it would be that considereding I pulled the heads and left the manifolds attached. I did have the transmission replaced not long ago. They must have not seated them properly but I guess I didn't notice. I put in new gaskets on both sides. Which by the way isn't a bad job but I had a hard time getting them to seal right. Took two attempts. Reset the fuel trims and the ticking is gone, engine runs smooth and acceleration has improved. Got to feel the real difference with that stage 1 cam. It's not that big of a difference but it does add a little more. It feels like how the truck should have been from the factory.
    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package.
