Avery Dameron Posted November 10, 2021 Posted November 10, 2021 My 2019 silverado 5.3 is about time for another oil change (has 45k miles btw). The dealership still has 6 free oil changes but i was just thinking about doing it myself since i dont have to wait around for someone else to. Does anyone know if this voids any kind of engine warranty ?
Black02Silverado Posted November 10, 2021 Posted November 10, 2021 (edited) No, it will not void the warranty. I do all my own oil changes from day one. I see you are in Wilmington. I just moved here this past Jan. I've tried to change my location on here but it keeps giving me an error message. Edited November 24, 2021 by Black02Silverado 1
redwngr Posted November 10, 2021 Posted November 10, 2021 The 6 changes the dealer is providing aren't 'free'. They are pre-paid. (and buried in the sales transaction) 1

I have always changed my own oil/filter and I have never been asked for maintenance records prior to having a warranty claim honored by GM.

I'm sure they didn't figure that into the price of the truck at the time. 1

Adamace1 Posted November 11, 2021 Posted November 11, 2021 I do all my own maintenance. I got a 2021 with 28,000 miles on it. 1. I take pics and video of the oil change. 2. I use the correct oil and filters. 3. I keep all receipts and maintenance logs. I dont fear GM would deny a warranty claim. I do think they will ask for all of that information if a failure could be because of a lack of maintenance.

Cancels out some of the the ones that trade every year.
Kilgore Trout Posted November 11, 2021 Posted November 11, 2021 (edited) I thought I may have related this story here before, if I did and forgot, please forgive me. I bought my 2007 Yukon new. I have pretty much always did my own oil/filter changes. At like 90K miles I started to really notice my oil consumption, seemed really excessive. I took it to my local dealer (one of the good service dealer service departments I have encountered) when it developed a low idle miss. My dealer found a fouled #7 plug (looked like something out of the movie alien). They determined the AFM Oil Consumption TSB had never been performed, so did the first part of soaking the cylinder in solvent to free the rings. They came back to me and said they couldn't free the rings and the engine needed new rings and pistons as per the TSB. They also said per the TSB, it needed an upgraded driver's side valve cover and an AFM oil pressure relief valve deflector. GM said, because it was less than 100K they would cover all the parts and a portion of the labor. They never enquired about maintenance history, asked for receipts of oil and filters purchased, nada. I keep my receipts of all parts and materials I buy along the way and actually keep a spread sheet of every single maintenance and repair I do on my trucks, but this is mainly for my own records of when things need doing and also when the time comes the next owner has a baseline for when everything was last done. You get a cavity because you don't brush your teeth regularly. Same it true of most things. Engine oil related issues and oil changes in example. But yes, then entire maintenance routine. 1
Transient Posted November 12, 2021 Posted November 12, 2021 (edited) Dealerships that give free oil changes do it because they also inspect the vehicle "free of charge" in an effort to get the customer to buy into whatever repair they discover needs doing. The business term for these free oil changes is "loss leader". The idea is if they give the oil change for free, and notice other repairs that are needed, they'll capture profits they otherwise would've missed by not getting you into the shop in the first place. Ironically, this is pretty much standard for retail businesses. I can rebuild anything on my truck, except the transmission, but I still take advantage of my dealers oil change offer because it saves me money. Edited November 12, 2021 by Transient 3

Z45 Posted November 12, 2021 Posted November 12, 2021 Frequency of oil changes is the key to success in pushing related products and services for the OEM dealer. A few free oil changes can go a long way toward increasing the amount of money a customer will spend at the dealer during the ownership of the vehicle. In other words, you are money in the bank. 1
