T8Z    NEW!  Buckle to Drive, prevents vehicle from being shifted out of Park until driver seat belt is fastened; times out after 20 seconds and encourages seat belt use, can be turned on and off in Settings menu

At least it’s defeatable. There was some talk that it wouldn’t be. And maybe that will still be the case eventually. Not a good idea for a truck used on a jobsite.

Agreed. Good to teach your kids good driving habits. Bad for when you are driving your truck 100 yards down the road or down the farm

A little off topic, but cannot tell you how many people I have written up for not wearing a seat belt while driving a fork lift (PIT).

 

Oh, we were just going a few feet, and then they crash, kill someone, or drive off of the dock killing themself.

Maybe the thinking is, it slows you down, and hopefully you are forced to be aware of your surroundings before taking off.

Not a huge fan of nanny devices. Am a huge fan of safety and they are not mutually exclusive. Seems to me the more responsibility you take from the driver the less responsibility he takes, period. 

 

First time I noticed this was teaching advanced motorcycle street survival. Give a guy leathers and a helmet and brakes he can do stoppies with and he will ride like an idiot. Put his butt on a 50's Brit single with cable drum brakes in a swim suit bare foot and you might not get him on the bike.  Nothing makes you safer than being totally vulnerable.

 

I remember reading in Car Craft years ago explaining that hood ornaments were removed because they 'could flail the flesh off a pedestrian'. I laughed. Like the 4,000 lb car hitting you at 30 mph wouldn't get the job done? 

 

The wreck you survive best is the one you don't get into.

Pay attention and act like your driving something dangerous.

 

 

There are enough laws to keep people safe. 

They want to really help. 

Enforce the laws you already have.

Make NFL players wear leather helmets again and watch the head injuries plummet!

 

I miss hood ornaments!  Unfortunately, a lot of jerks took to wearing them around their necks in the late 1980s and early '90s which signaled their demise.  Probably along with that CC article too!

I remember when seat belts were fastened behind you to make the buzzer stop. They can’t tell me what to do was the rallying cry. Now I feel naked without it on, like forgetting my cell phone. No click no start is just another electronic device to potentially fail with little use to the consumer.

We've been down this road before. 1974 model year cars had what was called the seat belt interlock system. It was fraught with enough problems that repair manuals of the era dedicated at least 1/3 of their content to trouble-shooting this one system. Fortunately in 1975 congress mandated the removal of this requirement. Was this a case of congress listening to their constituents?  Oh Hell no, just like today they were acting in their own self-interest because they hated the system so bad.

Ford has a similar system that is more aggravating than the buckle to drive.

Funnily enough I read something the other day that said the first testicle guard worn by cricket players was in the late 1800s, 1880s or so. The first helmet? 1974....

If it can be turned off in the settings menu like the OP said, I see no issues with it.  If it's force enabled on and can't be disabled, that would be an issue IMO...

At least it's not the forced rat-trap nooses they implemented in the late 80's-early 90's cars! My first wife had an Escort with those damn things and I wanted to cut them out and put regular seat belts in it. A few months after we got married it was traded for a 94 Firebird.
