I don't understand how this oil consumption can be considered acceptable. Why do some burn oil and some do not? I am due for my second oil change right now which is a 5000 mile interval for me. I have towed my travel trailer for about 2500 miles of those 5000 miles. I check my oil regularly including today and it has not burned any oil in 5000 miles. I currently have 8300 miles on it. I had first oil changed at 3300 miles.

Do you tow at like 80mph? If you’re conservative I’m sure it will be fine. If you drive like a banshee, she might use some oil

I tow with cruise set at 65 mph. I rarely ever go over 65. I use tow/haul mode. Transmission stays in 5th most of the time with downshifts to 4th going uphill.

Pulling rigs gas or diesel don’t use oil as a rule. My earliest pulling rigs were gas and lived at 3K rpm’s all day long. My diesels at maximum rpms at the speed limit in direct drive. Never in overdrive. There’re built for it. Today’s engines have more HP and TQ and can pull at lower RPMs and higher speeds. Oil usage is a different problem. Some cases nothing to worry about. If it is it will get worse, no matter what you do. Keep the dealer informed in case it does.

Yeah you drive sensible. Some people hammer it down hard and tow at 80. Bigger chance to burn oil doing that.

I picked up the truck yesterday, new oil change to start a consumption test, was told, don't remove the dip stick or the oil cap...talked to them again about what is acceptable. He told me, 1 qt/1k miles, I asked about miles vs. gals and he again said it's based on miles.

 

He then stated that GM will very likely say 2.5 qts in 4500 miles is within specs, however, it's up to GMC

 

Next I asked about why the oil light didn't even come on at 2.5 qts low, he said on this truck, it needs to be 3 qts low for the light to come on, to me, that's also BS

 

Oh well, consumption test started, I won't be doing much towing until Mar when we head back to Tennessee, then the miles will rack up quickly

They are wrong.  Tell them to pull up bulletin 03-06-01-023F  and to do the test properly.  Has a worksheet and everything for them to use to document.

Verify that the engine has no external leaks. Repair as necessary.

Begin oil consumption test after next regularly scheduled oil and filter change. Oil changes should not be performed during the test.

 

Verify that the engine is at normal operating temperature (see Owner's Manual or Service Manual).

Park the vehicle on a level surface.

 

Wait at least 15 minutes, after the engine is shut off, before checking the oil level to make sure that most of the oil has had time to drain back into the crankcase.

 

Verify that the oil level is at, but not above, the full mark on the dipstick and that the proper viscosity and quality oil are being used as recommended in the Owner's Manual.

Dealer should record the vehicle mileage, date and engine hours at the start of the test on the form included in this bulletin.

 

Ask the customer to verify and record the date, odometer, oil level, fuel added, and engine hours, each time the vehicle is fueled, following steps 3-5 and return the vehicle to the dealership if the oil level is found at or below the add mark, 0.946 liter (1 qt) low, if possible. The dealer will add oil to return the oil level to full. If the oil level remains above the add mark, the customer should continue to operate the vehicle and verify the engine oil level until either the oil level drops to or below the add mark or at least 4800 km (3000 mi) has accumulated since the test began before returning to the dealership for a final evaluation.

 

If the final evaluation shows that the engine uses more than 0.946 liter (1 qt) in 379 liters (100 gallons) of fuel used, follow the published symptom diagnostics as described in the appropriate Service Manual. Well clearly I wasn't asked to do anything between 1k mile visits. In fact, he told me several time to not remove the dip stick or the oil cap, do not add oil, just come in every 1k miles.

 

I'm not liking where I think this will end up, only time will tell

I have a 2021 6.6L Gas 2500HD. It's burning 1Qt per 5,000 miles, whether or not pulling/hauling 6,000 pounds (Loaded Camper & Truck). I've got 15,900 miles on it now. I do my own oil changes. I go through 8.5Qt Full Syn with GM filter per change every 5,000 miles.

In my experience this is a big factor on Direct Injection engines. My last sports car had a DI engine and the people who tracked them ran catch cans and used a lot of oil. Our cars held 10 quarts and they would lose at least 1 quart of oil in one day at the track. I did not track my car and was only a quart low 1 time in 5 years. The car would pop a warning message on the dash when it got around 1 quart low. Be easy on your truck and it likely will not use much oil.

Same. Using Valvoline Dexos 1 Gen 3 and AC Delco filter. Almost 20k miles. It's my daily driver so mostly not towing. I tow a 7k lb. Ice Castle RV trailer less than a dozen times a year.

    • Very true.   However.  GM did give those trucks with the single speed case Terrain Mode.  Terrain Mode mimics 4LO minus the gear reduction and torque capability.  It uses the ABS/braking system to perform the operation.  It also gives these one pedal driving (sort of) when in Terrain Mode via the active brake during throttle lift.     Does it have its limitations over a true 2 speed case?  Sure.  But it works.         
    • Of course actually engaging four wheel drive is step one or even daring to use a ramp like that with a two wheel drive and getting into a mess because of it. As to 4 low, these last few years if its a GM half ton it may not even have low range. A lot of the newer pickups have a lot lower first gear in an automatic transmission then they once did as it was common at one time for a gas engine truck or even the older diesels to just sit there and bog the engine due to the torque converter stall point and not enough torque was generated on reasonable traction to even spin a tire or get out of its own way up a steep grade and 4 low HAD to be used to get enough power to four tires to get them turning. These days traction control systems may hinder a vehicle in a situation like that although that means a tire or tires are spinning so in some ways the traction control can reduce wild spinning and anyone can correct me on that but I think some vehicles cut traction control off in low range ?.    By the sounds of it and you may have the proper equipment but if your responsible for helping vehicles out if they are not able to get out under their own power, I would say to be using a nylon tow rope or have one available so that one is able to give a bit of a run to help sling shot them some initial momentum as most tow straps are made out of polypropylene and impart way too much shock load if used to jerk a stuck vehicle into motion but are totally fine to use if going more from almost a dead pull with the tow vehicle and they are a lot less expensive to replace if damaged. That and some soft shackles to hook onto closed loop tow hooks on the truck your pulling as well as you having the proper shackle insert in your truck so there are no bad accidents with metal clevises joining things together or chain on the end of a tow rope or tow balls being hooked onto etc flying and causing damage or worse if it lets go. Its always a challenge pulling people because some are clueless and will over run the tow rope or strap and drive over it or that risk of ramming into the back of the tow vehicle so usually a few instructions are needed to clue in the driver of the stuck truck. TBN and ZDP levels matter. The one thing not covered was sufficient viscosity. Sad.     And yet we now have since API SN lower amount of them all with the only real change being a slight up tick in base oil selection. Along with lower concentrations of everything that makes oil work and lower and lower viscosity there is still an insistence on longer OCI's.    How low does the peanut butter and jelly level have to get before we say it's just white bread folded?    The new smoke and mirror treatment is the 'additives are INVISIBLE' to UOA testing with a health dose of TRUST ME.    I'm not picking on AMSOIL. This is coming from all of them. Every last one of them that abandon the low wear model in favor of the high mpg/EPA compliance model. 
    • First off use it in the way you’re more comfortable. In working in off road situations most of my life I used 4WD low range very little. In most cases when equipped I used auto 4WD. If I wanted maximum control going up and down very steep terrain  I used low range. Especially if I was driving a diesel. Same with very rutted terrain. In very muddy or snowy conditions I wanted momentum so high range worked well for that. With gravel ramps with limited traction I would try high range first. I would want smooth even increasing speed if I was fighting traction. Low range could give you too much to the wheels breaking traction trying to move. 
    • Having owned 4wd vehicle since the 1970s I find there are varying opinions on how to use 4wd, every owner is an expert in their minds.  IMO, 4LO is the appropriate gear and what I would use,  You have to feather the gas to avoid spinning tires and the lower the gear the better chance.  But like I said you will find those that think their method is best.  I live near a boat launch.  Yesterday there was a new Ford Maverick pulling out a pontoon boat almost 2x its size, they had no problems and they don't have a LO range.   True story. One winter day not long ago I was coming out of small town post office and there was a F150 4wd parked in front and was stuck foot deep snow ruts. I knew the lady so I asked her to put it in 4wd (wondering why in the middle of a 2-day snow storm she wasn't).  Her reply surprised me, "my husband" (the expert) told me not use that because it uses too much gas. She finally got unstuck spinning in 2wd which likely used more gas than not.
