I don't have much to add here except recently I had an engine rebuild done on my air-cooled 1978 Porsche 911. After the rebuild, the engine used a good bit of oil while breaking in (rings seating, etc..). After break-in, the oil consumption went back to factory specified usage. I used the same exact brand and weight oil after break-in that I used during break-in.

 

With the much more advanced engines in our trucks, I didn't experience and didn't expect any excessive usage during the break-in period with my 5.3.  I believe that if you use an oil that is approved in the Truck's user manual, it doesn't matter what brand you choose. I usually go to my local Chevy dealer and buy the oil/filter there. Its just down the road and I know the oil and filter is GM approved. I also have the added benefit of saying hello to the folks in the service and parts departments. Also, the cost is comparable to other available oils elsewhere.

Now isn't that a silly question. Of course I check my oil. In the decades of using Pennzoil exclusively, I have never had it "disappear" across the multitude of vehicles in my household. I find it also funny how I guess none of us "on the internet" appear to be real life people. I guess you also know and speak to more people face to face vs the multitudes in this or other forums. Most oils these days are good oils for what any of us are using them for. That is why these types of questions always end with the same answer of, pick one and just use it as long as its within the specs for your engine.

These threads always seem to be counterproductive. What is the best oil,gas,spark plugs ect.,ect.,ect. I don't understand how you would not be more confused after reading everyone's opinion and whose opinion out of the many do you go with. These are on all forums. Just use a good quality product and stick with it which is what most of us do.

I’ve been using Pennzoil for 20+ years in 10+ cars and trucks from a ‘94 350 small block w/ 150k mi to a turbocharged 2.0L and none of them ever had to have oil added between oil changes. The ‘07+ 5.3 were notorious for using oil but my ‘08 never lost a bit up until 95k mi when I traded it. I ran conventional oil until around 2010 when I switched to Pennzoil Platinum.

lol mobil one is one of the worst oils on the market

this fella did some testing on oils, right at 6:50 in the video explains all the additives  in the oils, look at the video, just for the record , this video is not what made me use the oil that I use, I have been using PENNZOIL FOR  a very long time in many cars including high horsepower cars 392 hemi supercharged 6.2 hemi I have never have any problem and my engine always runs like a clocks.

anyways here is the video its interesting spend a 10 min, if you like motor oils you will like this video.

Use dexos .

Use whatever you like.

This year I like Royal Purple. 

Change it early.

3500 miles is my OCI on all my trucks.

And what makes it the worst?  The oil gets refined at the same plants, its the additives that make the difference and what their bases are.  I have seen project farms test several times on the oils.  I have seen numerous engines fail by running oil that does not have the proper additives that their engine calls for, or by running pennzoil and the crankcase has ran dry from drinking it up.  I do not know if pennzoil is still paraffin based or not, but it was the absolute worst oil on the market when it was, and i refuse to ever touch pennzoil or put it in any of my vehicles.

I’ve never seen an engine use oil because of the oil. In NJ before synthetics we use Quaker State or Pennzoil. We had gas pulling trucks with 410 or 390 gears running 3K RPMS cruising. We had a few performance cars with 373-410 gears. Oil use wasn’t a problem until engines wore out. The benefits of synthetic was quite evident with our testing over req oil. Oil use between brands with a good engine we didn’t see it. Some chain pulling in my opinion.

you like it run it , we don't like mobil

    • It wouldn’t have happened if the government hadn’t mandated outrageous fuel mileage standards. It does very little for the consumer. It adds cost. Back during Covid there was a chip shortage. They gave a rebate for your truck if it didn’t have the chip to turn on cylinder deactivation. It was 50$ because at best you may see 1/2 a mile increase per gallon. Splitting hairs each fuel mileage trick wasn’t mandated. The government doesn’t do the engineering work and say use this until it’s already in use and they like it. The fuel mileage was mandated. And those add ons the results. There’s a mandate and they are the results.
    • It was never mandated.  Ever.    Automakers were incentivized to install it by getting CAFE credits to help with their vehicle fleet fuel economy scores.  They were being handed money/CAFE credits to install it.  Which is NOT a mandate.       The current admin removed the incentives that were behind them installing it.
