Corrosion On Chassis Nuts And Bolts

Do you see many of the chassis nuts and bots corroded on your truck (spring shackle nuts, lower ball joint nuts, front tow hook bots, etc)? Some of these are aluminized, but still corrode.

if you want zero corrosion leave your truck parked in a climate controlled garage and never drive it.

just think you do have road debris flying up under the truck when you are driving

I am just trying to find out if this is common on these trucks in normal use.

 

It's pretty much the norm. I have the same year truck as you, baby the thing, get it undercoated every year and where the undercoat has come off its rusted.

 

If your home in Florida is near the coast you get an extra wif of salt in the air that is helping speed along the process.

 

I doubt that a climate controlled garage would help these trucks as they are starting to corrode before they are out off the assembly line.

Nothing corrodes faster than the rear exhaust manafold bolts on a 6.0. Mine rusted right off in 4 years.

Yes, coastal Florida climate is brutal. Everything will corrode eventually around here, even chromed plastics. I do not have any rust on the truck, just some corrosion on chassis bolts and nuts.

 

Do you have any rust on underbody sheet metal? I have not undercoated my truck except for the rear wheel wells and all of the underbody sheet metal and brake lines ar ein pristine condition. It's just some bolts that look like they have been submerged in salt water for a month. I guess I can replace some of the worst ones, although surface rust should not degrade them. What I found amazing is that my front differential fill and drain plug rusted so bad. Must have been uncoated carbon steel.

Rusting an corrosion is "normal", but if you have a newer truck (IE 2008+) then you're going to have a lot more rust.

 

My 2000 Z71 had what I'd call normal rust on the undercarage after 8 years and 155k KM. My 2008's rear axle/shocks/etc is BRUTAL, and it has 25k km. I ended up slopping on tremclad black to try to slow the rusting in case I ever need to swap shocks.

 

The newer ones(2010+) don't even have rust proofing enderneath. More cost cutting measures.... :)

I wish I had coated all chassis bolts and nuts when my truck was new. I use CRC corrosion inhibitor spray which is much like rustproofing material. I sprayed this stuff along all door bottom inner edges and edges of hood where the sheet metal is creased. This kept water out and all the sheet metal is pristine. If I had done this on chassis bolts, they would look perfect too.

 

A can of CRC corrosion inhibitor will do the critical areas on the whole truck and costs about $ 8. Well worth the expense.

 

I know that corrosion of chassis bolts is pretty much normal, but my truck has been mostly sitting in the garage and I find the rate of corrosion a little too quick.

I hear you. I want my truck to last, as I do not drive it every day. I can certainly afford to buy a new one and pay the difference in cash, but is it going to be better than what I have?

Absolutely!..............LOL Probably not. Seems the "newer" these trucks get (every manufacturer), the cheaper they are made.

    • First off use it in the way you’re more comfortable. In working in off road situations most of my life I used 4WD low range very little. In most cases when equipped I used auto 4WD. If I wanted maximum control going up and down very steep terrain  I used low range. Especially if I was driving a diesel. Same with very rutted terrain. In very muddy or snowy conditions I wanted momentum so high range worked well for that. With gravel ramps with limited traction I would try high range first. I would want smooth even increasing speed if I was fighting traction. Low range could give you too much to the wheels breaking traction trying to move. 
    • Having owned 4wd vehicle since the 1970s I find there are varying opinions on how to use 4wd, every owner is an expert in their minds.  IMO, 4LO is the appropriate gear and what I would use,  You have to feather the gas to avoid spinning tires and the lower the gear the better chance.  But like I said you will find those that think their method is best.  I live near a boat launch.  Yesterday there was a new Ford Maverick pulling out a pontoon boat almost 2x its size, they had no problems and they don't have a LO range.   True story. One winter day not long ago I was coming out of small town post office and there was a F150 4wd parked in front and was stuck foot deep snow ruts. I knew the lady so I asked her to put it in 4wd (wondering why in the middle of a 2-day snow storm she wasn't).  Her reply surprised me, "my husband" (the expert) told me not use that because it uses too much gas. She finally got unstuck spinning in 2wd which likely used more gas than not.  
    • Your tire pressure issue may just be batteries, you can reset them using tge Ing switch (I think) and the owner's  manual. ChatGTP will b e a faster, better help than Google.
    • The thinking is that starting out in a higher gear makes it easier to avoid applying excessive torque when pressing the gas pedal. In a modern 4wd truck with 4 low and a limited slip or locking rear end, I would use 4 low and try to crawl up the ramp. Sometimes if they are too slippery, you have to back up to let the boat have some bouyancy, and then accelerate briskly to get some momentum to help you pull the through the slippery parts. 
    • I have a Retrax pro that I first had on my 2020 chevy and transferred it to my current GMC.  It stays in the garage most of the time, so hard for me to judge it's long term weather resistance.  It still works perfectly, been very durable.  It doesn't see oil patch usage, but it's not a mall queen.  It keeps most things mostly dry (small leaks) and the security of it is enough to slow someone down but not keep them out for long.  I would buy one again, it works for me.
