You can't just blame driving style. I had a 5.3 with 3.08 gears and my lifetime over 9000 miles was 14mpg. I would drive with the full intention of getting the best fuel economy possible, but it just wouldn't do it. It did have some good moments here and there, but when I went to a diesel 2500 I broke all my mpg records from that 1500.

 

It's a shitty problem to have because the dealers won't help out because it's easy to blame driving style.

Copying my post from another thread, for FYI here guysl:

 

Been emailing back and forth with Blackbear tuning about getting a tune done. They recommend running at lease 89 octane in the 5.3. See the quote below from my email with Justin at Blackbear. I will be more than likely using 89 octane from now on with the tune. I probably wont use E85 anymore because of the crappy mileage and its overpriced by me. Paid 3.72 for E85 last weekend, and 3.55 the weekend before that! Meanwhile since then regular gas has dropped below 3.70! The combination of an 89 octane and a tune from Blackbear, I'm sure I will see similar performance gains like when using E85 but with the gas mileage of regular gas.

Thats pretty good mileage. My numbers on regular gas are usually betteen 17-18 around town. With E85 I've been averaging between 14-15 around town. But dat powaaa

are you the first one to take off from a red light? If so that's why the mileage is so bad.

I'm always the first one off the line at red-lights and I get great mileage. For me it is sort of a game, both high mileage and not being left by traffic at a light.

 

I accelerate fairly slowly so it seems even worse to my fellow drivers if I'm caught napping at a light.

 

Two feet on the two pedals helps a lot. I am ready to go as soon as the light changes. I brake with my left always anyhow.

 

I use enough power to make sure I get up to a higher gear in a short time span. The grade/incline of the road makes a big difference in what gear/speed I seek to reach. I accelerate smoothly but often more slowly than other vehicles. When I reach my target gear/speed I transition to maintaining that speed. This is usually a calculated choice to lift my right foot just enough to stop all further acceleration.

 

I always tried to save fuel in my 2004 Silverado. It was frustrating and required ridiculous effort for small gains. These new DI trucks are well suited to stretching the fuel.

Best mileage is 25.4 and average 16-18 city. I don't drive like its a Sunday afternoon and like to open it up on the highway. No mods, still stock and lovin' every minute.

Hello everyone,

 

Just got back from a trip to San Diego, put about 1000 miles on my Sierra Denali with the 6.2L

 

Please keep in mind I live in Commifornia and we have the strictest emissions in probably the world.

 

Please also keep in mind I was 1 of 4 people in the truck with an estimated payload of 1,000-1,200 lbs (4 bodies plus various suitcases, laptops, coolers, etc)

 

Also, this trip occurred in 100* central valley heat for 62% of the miles

 

Truck is 2WD with Standard Box

 

Used 91 octane entire trip

 

Here are my real world MPGs with my 6.2L (truck is basically brand new, picked up in 2nd week of April, this was first road trip):

I was extremely pleased with the 6.2L getting over 20 MPGs on a trip like this. When you account for the CA emissions restrictions on my truck, the valley heat, the payload, the L.A. traffic and the Grapevine (mountain range separating NorCal and SoCal)..... to get 20.8 MPGs on my return trip is outstanding IMO.

 

I kept the cruise control on 73 MPH on pretty much the entire trip (when I wasn't in traffic).

 

 

So count me as very impressed with these new engines from GM. I NEVER came close to these MPGs in my old 2010 GMC Sierra CCSB with the 5.3L

Sounds pretty consistent with my results, in colorado I think we get a little better mpg. And I think my bedcover also gives me about .5-1 mpg.

I also know my dirt bike in the back will cost 1-2 mpg on the highway and once I accident my had the truck in 4wd auto which cost me about 1 mpg on a tank

Cruised 115 miles the other day between 80/85mph. Avg 19mpg...Not too shabby.

**with 93 Octane**

Cross country trip from Ohio to Arizona crew cab short bed 5.3 w/ 22" wheels 3.42 gears with around 4-500 pounds in the bed ypaqamu5.jpg averaged 70-80 mph the whole trip. 87 octane the whole way.

    • We have now!  2027 GMC Sierra  Early look, but I'm a GMC guy and so far I think I like the looks of the Chevy better.
    • HD at the moment, are kinda their own deal.  How LTZ sells on those vs on 1500, there is a difference.   They are merging most of the mid trims on 1500.  LT, RST and LTZ are replaced by one trim, Silverado.  LT and RST are a BIG portion of sales.    Bad naming choice aside, the new Silverado trim will offer the spread of options that those three trims offered.  So expect to see things like the tech package for example, and memory seats.  And LT Trail Boss will now just be "Trail Boss" (formerly LT Trail Boss) but will offer content spread like the new Silverado trim will.  The press photos showed the Trail Boss (formerly LT Trail Boss) has access to Super Cruise now, which on the current truck was High Country only.       Here is the Trail Boss interior.  Memory seats and Super Cruise are present.  All things the LT Trail Boss it replaces, and the RST it was based on didn't get on the current gen.  You had to go to LTZ or ZR2 for memory seats, and High Country for Super Cruise.      
    • I installed a Hellwig rear sway bar on my 21 Sierra SLT, it made a huge difference on how the truck handles, no body roll, the trucks much more planted now. Not sure of the suspension differences between the 21 and 26,  if its body roll your having a sway bar will solve it. 
    • So a follow up and my fix. I found in online searches the live data to look at on a scan tool to verify the fuel tank pressure sensor was working.  It showed an spec number towards the lower end of the rang, but in spec.  Then while it was running opened the gas cap and the pressure should change.  It didn't change even a tiny bit.  The data for the purge valve said it was open...never changed. So then I measured the voltages on the plug for the fuel pressure sensor and they matched what it should be.  So local car quest parts had the sensor in stock...it was a bit of a pain to remove and an even bigger one to get it to actually go back in.  It helped to unbolt the driveshaft and bungie cord away from the gas tank to give a bit more room to work. So fuel tank pressure sensor in I cleared the code, and started it up.  I went to the scan tool's live data and... Eureka! The pressure number was different and fluctuated a bit.  So took it on a short drive and pressure number varied saw the purge valve go from closed to open and back to closed.  Drove it to and from work for roughly a week plugged in the scan tool no codes.  I took it in to get tested and passed.  In my state's infinite wisdom (oops meant greed), since I pushed the test with the maximum extensions I have to take it back in by Feb '27 to 'get it back up to date', then my next test won't be until Feb '29. 
    • Any grease on the stud threads of any kind?   Wheel studs should have NOTHING on them for proper torquing and so the nuts don't back off.     Are all of the mating surfaces clean?  So wheel, rotor and hub?     We've had plenty of trucks at work with that wheel, this is a first to me.  Makes me think they've got a lube tech putting anti-seize on all the wheel studs or some kind of grease, and they need to stop doing that.  To have 11 other trucks with the same exact problem.
