No I wasn't going fast to start with, it actually slid in pretty slow. The shoulder was just black ice, no matter what I did it kept going towards the ditch. I'm sure there are some scratches down the side, but I'll deal with those in the spring, when I detail the truck...

Yes, Black is not fun to deal with. Glad it wasn’t bad. Before I got better tires, it was like ice skating where I lived.

I don't know if I'd have the same factory tires as you, but I'm very disappointed in mine.  I never had real 'snow' tires on my old truck, but it was pretty sure footed with some normal A/T tires.  

 

I don't love my wheels either, so I may just replace both here this spring.  :D

I actually have Hurcules Avalanche Xtremes on the truck, which is a winter tire. But, it doesn't matter what tire when its black ice...

Got my 2015 GMC a few weeks ago and every day I try to undo something the previous owner did. Seems he had problems with gas milage, (as did I) but had some odd ideas how to fix it. He had the tires pumped up to 70 psi. Yikes! Refused to change the air filter, which I admit looked fine, but at 50k and $20? Really? So then I guess in some misguided act of frustration, he traded it in. Probably made a salesman happy. So new filter, cleaned mass air flow sensor, cleaned throttle body and tire pressures returned to spec. Sea Foam, new tank of gas and a a 30 mile romp in the county and it went from 11 to 18.3 avg on the trip meter which may or may not mean anything. Oh and I keep washing it, but it keeps snowing.

You guys should have just gotten a midnight edition. Comes with duratracs from the factory! This new 6.2 gets around way better than my duramax did.

If you do the math and testing you will find higher pressures to a point will save more than enough money to cover the faster tire wear and keep money in your pocket. The factory SA tires ran around 48 to 50 psi got me between 2 and 3 mpg extra.

I know it makes a bigger donut which translates to lower rippems and overall better fuel economy, but the guy was nuts cranking them up to 70 piss eyes. Still got crap mileage because the problem was not in the tire. Air, fuel, spark. It wasn't getting #1.

Yeah, 70 is way to much. The main savings come from less sidewall flex reducing rolling resistance and it increases noise, vibration, and harshness which can be annoying in some vehicles.

I've run Duratracs in the past, they are only good for about the first 20k km. After that they are loud and not so good on hard packed snow.

If I had a 4wd and lived anywhere that snowed the first thing I'd do would put Iroks or MTR's on. Iroks are more aggressive but they have more lug noise than the MTR's but functioned VERY well on my old Toyota crawler on just about any terrain.

After years of driving in the snow I can tell you, the first tires to slide off the road are bald tires, the second tires to slide off the road are Iroks and big mud tires just like them. They are no better than bald tires. Snow isn't the problem, it's packed down snow and ice... And nothing short of studded tires and chains (both not legal for road use in my area) will help you on black ice.

Welp, found some dead spots at the top of the infotainment screen, and fails on recalibration every time. So, off to dealer for a checkup and free wash next week. Good thing I have GM extended powertrain and accessory/electronics-electrical warranty. Now I get to see what it's worth. 

    In the meanwhile, milage seems to be on the uptick, even in the snow and with AWD on. Riding better with proper tire inflation, but still on the fence with the Ranchos. I do about as close to zero off roading as you can imagine, so I don't require an aggressive shock. Don't tow or haul much, but it does happen.

Put some new spyder tail lights on. Yeah it’s snowing pretty good too. Love the lights though.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
