Between question...when do I go to the dealer to have this done? Noob question but I've never had a "warranty" and "4 free services". I'm currently around 75 with 3500 miles. Sent from my DROID RAZR HD

Aaron: Back a few months ago, the dealers were saying that you had to wait for the oil life monitor to say you were down to 20% life. Now I'm hearing on this forum that you get four changes, whenever you want them, but you're limited to four free changes within the first two years. I'd suggest giving your service department a call to clear it up.

Getting down to 20% usually puts you right around the 6500 - 7000 mile point.

What is the rule with changing your own oil and keeping the warranty going? I figured a dealer or shop would have to change to give you a record. Could someone fill me in?

You can do it yourself, but keep receipts for the oil & filter purchases and keep a record of when you changed it. As long as you have a record of the date, mileage, and what you did, and corresponding receipts for the purchase of the supplies you'll be OK.

Roger that, thank you!

This website has a list of Dexos1 approved oils: http://centerforqa.com/gm/dexos1-brands

Sometimes you see oils that will say they "exceed Dexos1 requirements". From what I've read, GM charges a royalty fee to have Dexos certification. Some companies oils meet the spec but they don't want to pay GM the royalty fee to advertize that they do (hence the "exceeds Dexos1 requirements").

Just called my Dealer and talked to the service department said I get 4 Oil changes in 2 years, can use them at any time.He sugested to me to wait until 3 thousand because they also rotate the wheels.I have almost 1000 on my truck now.He also said the new engines are different then years ago when it was recommended to change the oil at a earlier time.

I think it varies by dealership. My dealer says GM should honor free oil changes within the first 2 years, unlimited times as long as the OLM gets below 30%.

Seems to be that way (vary by dealer or whoever got which memo). Even at my dealer, the Service Manager told me one thing and Service Writers were sying another. I think they all sync'd up though. At my Dealer, it is only 4 oil changes / tire rotations during the first 24 months, but whenever customer wants. I run very low mileage so I will do mine at 6 month intervals which is usually 2-3 kmiles. Just my circumstances.

I'm actually around 57% @ 3300 miles. Perhaps I'll call service and schedule one ... You'd think with all this fancy technology, I'd get a text message that says "your oil level is at xxx, please schedule an oil change". Sent from my DROID RAZR HD

According to my service guy, 20% was the point that an oil change was necessary (and it would be close to 7000 miles), and there was no need with the synthetic blend they use to change it sooner. I understand that some people still insist on changing it early, and especially make sure the first oil change was done sooner.

So at 57% and 3300 miles, you're probably right on track, and according to the manufacturer, still have quite a bit of life in the oil. So you'd definitely not receive any kind of warning from your vehicle that you're due for service. I got down to 19% and 6950 miles before my first oil change. And I got no messages.

I think OnStar has a maintenance program that monitors your vehicle's systems and can send some type of message, but I don't know how often that happens, or how they send them to you. (I don't use text messaging, so I wouldn't have gotten a text from them).

The one VERY IMPORTANT thing for you to do is to check your oil regularly and keep it topped off with the proper oil. My dealer said it would be acceptable (to GM) to lose 1 quart every 3000 miles. I haven't seen this oil consumption in my truck, but there have been posts on here about oil loss so it's important to check.

In my opinion, as long as your oil level is good, you're still in good shape.

You have a low oil light and a oil change light, whats the other light you want? People change their oil at their own whim. So I guess you want a mind reading oil change light thingy. LOL!

Onstar Does this....but you get an email and it gives you all the current stats of the truck.

You will....from your friends at OnStar. (at least I do, for all my OnStar equipped vehicles)

Mine is still active until June. It'll notify me "time for oil change"?

If it was given your email when it was setup, you should get a monthly maintenance/vehicle diagnostic report from 'OnStar Services'.

It's a neat way to keep track of the status of the vehicles you arrange/do the maintenance on, but don't drive (or not often).

    • My house is set at 75. My car at 70. When I have guests the house is at 70.
    • OK you say you could hang meat but what was the actual temp? One of the AC systems job is to remove humidity that we feel on our body your new system removed alot of humidity as that is were the water comes from on the ac coils and that made it feel colder. 80 degrees with high humidity will feel hot vs 80 degrees with low humidity will feel alot cooler.
    • I was using recirc/max air. Especially if it really hot i start out by lowering the front windows a little with regular ac the go to recirculation after a few and rolling windows up. And it does not have the newest refrigerant. It has per the info under the hood r134. Not the new r1234yf.
    • tldr; Shade tree mechanic stumped by variable displacement AC compressor.   Not Silverado related, but for my 2000 Camaro SS. I've never really used the AC since acquiring the car a good handful of years ago. I plan to take it on a trip this summer so I wanted to make sure the AC was in good shape. On an 73 degree day in the shop with the car idling I set the AC on "Max", temp set to cold, and fan on hi. The compressor turned on and air turned nice and cold.   I let it run for several minutes but noticed the compressor never cycled off. The engine was up to temperature enough that it began cycling the cooling fans on high. I had a set of manifold gauges hooked up and it was consistently at about 25 psi on the low side and between 200 and 225 psi (warm engine) on the high side. Per temperature charts, the low side is low (should be 30-35) and the high side is a little high (up to 170 per chart). I read the low pressure as potentially being under-charged underscored by a continually running compressor This was also underscored by temp readings of mid-20 degrees at the vents. Not just cold, freezing cold. Switching off the AC but leaving the HVAC fan on high produced a deluge of condensation underneath the vehicle. I was getting ice buildup on the evap core most likely.   The low reading (25psi) concerned me that the compressor wasn't switching off so I swapped out the pressure switch. No change in behavior, still ran constantly.   The AC clutch works fine as it engages/disengages with the HVAC switch on command. The compressor relay is good as I swapped it with two different known good relays just to be sure. Having eliminated that, and the pressure switch, I added refrigerant, thinking the constant run and low "low" pressure were signs of a slight undercharge. Makes sense, the car is 26 years old and it doesn't appear the AC system has ever been touched.   Adding some R134a didn't meaningfully change the low side pressure. And that's when a lightbulb flashed upstairs. While I consider the car "old", it's possibly "new" enough to have a variable displacement compressor. Did some reading and sure enough. Dangit. I don't work on these for this reason.   Adding refrigerant means the compressor will just compensate and won't really change pressures until it's severely overcharged or undercharged. But at least I wasn't getting ice/frost anymore, but instead high 30 degree temps out of the vents. That's more normal, but with variable displacement now I have no idea where my charge level is at. It's probably overcharged now. The high side even with the engine radiating serious heat was never really over about 225.   The static pressure at room temperature is dead on, before and after the charge. Both high/low equalize after some rest.   I'm thinking I'll need to take it to a shop. I want the proper charge level so I'm not working the compressor too hard. The only way to get an accurate charge is to evacuate and then re-charge with the exact amount specified for the system -- at least that's what I'm reading.   Anyone here with modern automotive AC knowledge?
    • Mine is in the shop for the AC now. While it did get cold after a bit, it would take a while to even start to cool the air at all. Turns out the compressor was bad and cycling.
