Don't need active Onstar account to use the remote app - Only have to use the app once during your trial and it (the app) will still work even after subscription expires. I don't remember how long, but think it is like 5 years. There is another thread on here where we have confirmation from Onstar.

Exactly right... if you look at your window sticker, you will see exactly what comes with your truck...

Look under "Safety and Security" and you'll see a section that might say "6mth ONSTAR®... TURN NAV & 5-YEARS REMOTELINK APP KEY FOB SERVICES (ASK DEALER ABOUT GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE)."

RemoteLink is the remote app... so per your window sticker, you should be good to go for 5 YEARS.

Unless I'm missing something?

Found the quote...

Quote from Onstar website:

"An active OnStar Directions & Connections or Safe & Sound service plan is required to access most RemoteLink features. However with 2014 OnStar equipped vehicles, when you download and use RemoteLink just once during your OnStar trial or consecutive subscription, you'll unlock access to the RemoteLink Key Fob Services, including Remote Start, Remote Door Lock and Remote Horn and Lights, for five years from date of vehicle delivery.

OnStar RemoteLink Key Fob Services do not include any emergency services, Automatic Crash Response, stolen vehicle assistance, live Advisor service, or Hands-Free Calling. If you sell your GM vehicle or wish to cancel use of OnStar Key Fob Services, you must contact OnStar at 1.888.4.ONSTAR. Subsequent owners will be able to activate the remaining term of the Key Fob Services by calling 1.888.4.ONSTAR."

If you know someone who works for GM you can get the best deal through their "Friends and Family" discount for OnStar.

Does it have to be GM proper or does a dealership employee count?

All great points, will call tomorrow and see if paying by the year will save any... As far as having an active subscription to use the app I just found the window sticker that was in the truck when it was delivered and it says the app is good for 5 years for remote features?

Yes. As long as you use it once while account is active. See my previous post #19.

Once you are out of subscription you can get another 6 months free from State Farm (don't need to be a customer):

  • OnStar is offering a free six-month Directions and Connections subscription to State Farm® auto policyholders and State Farm prospects.
  • Offer is only available to inactive OnStar accounts.
  • The offer applies to those who own or lease a 2006 or newer GM vehicle equipped with OnStar, and are not active OnStar subscribers.
  • Enrollment in Drive Safe & Save is not required to participate.
  • State Farm auto policy is not required to participate.
  • There are no direct mail or direct email campaigns with this offer.
  • Awareness of the offer will primarily be communicated by State Farm agents and State Farm Customer Care Center sales representatives.
  • To redeem eligible participants may request this offer by pushing blue OnStar button in their vehicle. When connected to OnStar Advisor they can request "State Farm 6-Month Activation Offer".
  • Final approval for the free six-month offer is subject to eligibility requirements established by OnStar.

Does not apply to: AK, MA, ND, NY, PA, RI, SD, VA, WI or Canada (but I think it is still worth a try)

It might be worth it if I was a current State Farm customer, or someone seriously considering switching to State Farm. No way I'd put myself through the constant sales calls and mailings from State Farm and all of their small subsidiary agencies for OnStar that I didn't use to begin with.

Interesting marketing ploy though!

Actually it has nothing to do with that and you wont receive any marketing. State Farm has a program with Onstar that can offer discounts on your insurance if you let onstar report your milage to State Farm. To encourage customers to do it the offer to get you free onstar for a year. Problem is that it comes accross as a rebate with some state insurance departments (big no-no) so to get around it they offer it free to everyone for 6 months. But hey if you dont use want it, dont get it.

Im not too bag on on star quite frankly. Its slow and at times unreliable. I got lost in San Antonio and called on star to get me back to the interstate call went thru, but directions never came. Smart phone works so much better, and it doesn't take 10 minutes for the directions to be sent to the truck.

On Star doesnt do traffic routing like my Garmin.
