2015 Sierra 1500 - E85 capable?

Hey all,

 

First post here in this forum. Picked up a 2015 Sierra 1500 SLT crew cab last weekend. LOVE this thing. Traded in a 2007 Avalanche for it. (Wish they made Avy's on the new Suburban platform, I'd have bought one of those instead...)

 

Anyways - on to the question: noticed my truck does NOT have a yellow fuel cap. Does that mean I can NOT run E85? Looking through the VIN decode thread and the 2015 VIN card, I don't see any options listed for 5.3 Flex Fuel. But for VIN code C (which I have) it DOES say "L83 - ENGINE GAS, 8 CYL, 5.3L SIDI VVT, AFM, E85 MAX, ALUM"

 

Does the bolded text above mean I can run E85? My Avy had a yellow cap, but it also had a different VIN code for Flex Fuel E85 capable. I don't see the same for the Sierra.

 

Figured I should check first before running a tank through it. ;)

If you look around I believe there is a factory or aftermarket conversion kit you can install if its that important to you.

Wow. I hadn't heard of this but you're right. MY14 4.3L engines continue to sport flex fuel capability as standard equipment, but if you want it on either a Silverado or Sierra with the L83 5.3L, you need to tick the box for RPO code FHS...

I believe E-85 capability requires bigger injectors and fuel pump. I'd suspect a mod in the ECM.

E85 capable is standard on 2014 5.3's, $100 upcharge for E85 on the 2015 5.3's.

No I think more than anything its a program as well as module that does something. Has more to do with burn than anything. Fuel pump shouldnt have anything to do with it.

The sensor Im guessing would actually be some where up on the manifold, as its going to adjust due to the burn etc. Injectors might be different, but like I said that module and the programming is making adjustments so your engine doesnt fry. mechanically minus the e85 the two engines are 99.999% identical.

Since the option is only $100, I'm thinking they just enable e85 in the programming and change nothing physical.

Unless they changed something for 2014 GM hasn't used a ethanol sensor for about 8-10 years. It's all in the programming of when to switch to the e85 fuel tables.

On the 2015 5.3, e85 capability is a $100 option for some reason (vs standard in 2014).

I would like to know the same thing...is it just a programming and a part add on as my 2014 Silverado had it. I assumed it was there on the 2015 by default. Not sure what the $100 add on is all about, as I would gladly upgrade; however as I'm not building a new truck It would be nice to know if such an upgrade is possible once the truck is built.
