Question About Oil

Recommended Posts

I picked up my 2014 Sierra SLE 5.3L this summer and got my first oil change this week. I show it calls for 0W20, but my receipt shows the dealer put in 5W30.. any reasoning behind this? I have read about having a thicker oil in winter time (I live in Minnesota, been between -5 and 30 degrees this week), but want to make sure all is good since this is my first truck. Should I bring it back and have the recommended 0W20 put in, or did they do this for a specific reason?

I know it's the dealer, but some of my worst car stories come from bring it to a dealer..

I'd sure like to know why they didn't put in the proper "MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED" oil ,which is 0W-20 in these new engines!

They either didn't have any 0W-20,they are ignorant of the facts, or they just didn't give a s**t!

Maybe they used cheaper Dino oil. Is hard to find 0w20 if it isn't synthetic.

Should I bring it back and have them swap it with 0W20?

Dave, perhaps you know - I went to the Luther Chevy dealer off of 694/Brooklyn Blvd. Not sure if the GMC side actually takes vehicles in for work as all of my appoints scheduled through them have sent me next door to the Chevy side.

Bring it back and have them replace it. When they tell you its ok, ask them to show you where it says that's the approved oil and then enjoy the show.

Take it back make them fix it on their dime. The 5W-30 shouldnt hurt anything

You should take it back. It could have just been a lazy service writer and just put anything on the ticket. My ticket from when I had it done doesn't even show what weight they put in. This is mostly why I like doing this stuff myself, but I figure I might as well use the service warranty.

I'm going to call tomorrow and have it switched.

Side note, have you guys heard of this model/year spuddering at low speeds? I got going after a stop sign and the truck shuddered like it was having a fuel pump issue then went as normal.

Sounds like torque converter.

Have them flash the latest update.

Oil changes are very important on these new motors as the direct injection has shown to make the oil dirty.

  1. 0W20 ONLY for these engines, no dealer should have a problem getting it as the General has it on their skid load and truck load program. it costs more but the 2014s have warranty oil changes for two years, get the proper oil in there.

Thanks for the heads up guys, much appreciated. As for the shudder, is torque converter the only thing it could be? Haven't had t happen before the oil change.

I agree. These motors have been out long enough now that every dealer should have 0W-20 on the shelf (or barrel). My first oil change was in January this year and my invoice showed

"DEXOS 0W-20 #19259487 QTY 8"

I searched that number and found a picture of the AC Delco/GM quart bottle.

If anything you want a thinner oil in the winter. 5w30 probably wont hurt it though. Dealer should be putting the correct stuff in there specially if you didn't ask otherwise. Under warranty I would be sure to put the correct stuff in it, blow an engine that's something they look into. Really the 0w20 and 8 qts thing has more to do with extending the oil life and ive also heard it has something to do with MPG, but cant confirm that.

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because it’s in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
