Any updates?

 

The new engine replacement is taking longer than planned. It is supposed to be ready by Jan 7th. Total time in the shop will be a little over two weeks. (I brought it in the 23rd of December). Since I want it done right, I am not breathing down there necks.

 

They have given me a loner car and I could have pushed for a truck, but I don't need one right now. The only jobs I've had recently is small ones, and I can haul whatever I need in a car. Within the next two weeks I need to haul three sheets of ply-wood, but I should have my truck back by then.

 

I went back to the dealer and stated my case:

 

--> I'm concerned about the trucks reliability. Sure, it will have a new engine, but it's not factory installed. There are lot's of hook ups that need to be done: power steering, master cylinder, Air conditioning, heating, radiator, 4x4, electrical, etc. This last time it broke down on a side road by my home. What if it breaks down on a highway next time?? What about if my wife is driving it with my kids inside of it?

 

--> Many times, even a loaner truck will not work for the type of night and weekend work I do with the truck. For instance:

 

**> This past summer I had a job of taking out all the moldy drywall, door jams, and doors from a flooded basement. In doing a job like this, I can't help putting in a scratch on my truck. If I have a rental, this is a problem (the dealer uses a rental company).

 

**> This past year, I did multiple jobs of cutting down and hauling trees. I always put in a scratch or two with loading/unloading trunks and limbs. In other words, putting in a scratch or dent on a working truck is given. If this is a rental this is a problem.

 

So, I told the dealer my concerns and the sales manager said that someone from GM would call me. So far, no one has called me. So, I am still trying to contact them.

 

So, in general, having a new engine is light years ahead of a fixed engine. But, I paid for a new reliable truck and that is it what I expect. But, if GM continues to ignore me, then I can live with just a new engine. I just don't know what potential problems I will have down the road?

I need to add that in the past two weeks, I have gone back over in my mind the question "should I have bought the F150 instead"? The answer always comes back with: "If I can get over this hump, then I'm pleased". The Silverado is a nice truck and I made the right choice.

Not to make light of your problem since I would be mad in your situation. But, as I've stated before has the truck given you any other problems? If it hasn't then I wouldn't worry about any reliability issues. You're also the first person to have something major happen to the engine where the whole then needed to be replaced (even if it was to be on the safe side and I would have wanted a new engine if I were in your situation). I just think it was a freak thing and some very bad luck. I can understand you being worried about reliability issues, but don't worry about it unless it has given you other problems. If it hasn't then there's nothing to be worried about.

I don't see where there is anything to worry about. It will have a new engine. In the unlikely event something is left disconnected you will know within a couple of days. Probably sooner. Just don't pan a trip immediately upon delivery. Drive it a couple of days around town first. These things happen. Otherwise we wouldn't need a warranty. Good luck and enjoy the truck.

These engines are so modular they are just plug and play. So no big deals with changing them.

 

Be glad it's in a truck most SUV and small cars require the entire from end to be pulled off.

 

The steering in these are electric so they are not hooked up to the engine. Just FYI so don't worry about that.

 

There is enough room to pull the engine so the Mater cylinder will most likely not be touched. Then it's only a vacuum lines to be dealt with.

 

Your truck isn't a lemon you just got a bad part in the engine. I will tell you most defective internal parts fail in the first 1000 miles.

 

The reason for the warranty is to deal with defective parts such as this.

I know someone who had the engine fail in his 2015 Escalade (early model). He had a enough money that he just traded in on a new one, extended version. It was taking to long to get a replacement. They gave him a new Silverado as loaner but he was not happy with that.

Honestly, I'd be more worried they'd damage the body of the truck doing the replacement then I would worry about long term issues with the replacement engine. It's a brand new engine you're getting and as other's have said, they're pretty "plug and play." As long as the guys doing the work are capable of lowering it into the engine bay and operating wrenches to hook everything up, you should be good to go. I agree it sucks having this done on a new truck but that's the gamble every consumer makes when buying a vehicle. I'd be satisfied that they're honoring the warranty so quickly and putting in a new engine rather than fixing the old one.

 

Don't worry about not getting the Ford. Hindsight is 20/20. You bought the truck you wanted the most AT THE TIME. If this didn't happen you wouldn't even be questioning your decision so don't question a past decision based on current information. Otherwise we would always want to go back in time and undo something that didn't work out for us and that goes for everything in life. Good luck man keep us posted!

I wouldn't be worried about the installation.

 

Do they take the cab off to do a 1500 engine swap? (cab removal is common in the Duramax world)

Everyone: Like music to my ears. I told the dealer that I bought it at, that I'll assume it's totally fixed and not demand a replacement.

How about an update Stan?

So, here's the good news:

 

-- Truck brought in the 23rd of December

-- Ready to pick up 8th Jan (But I was taking a weeks vacation at Virginia Beach--cheaper this time of year)

 

Picked up the truck last night. Runs great, they washed it outside and inside--so it looks great.

 

I'm thrilled to have my truck back. I really need to haul three sheets of plywood and I have a job of cutting and hauling a couple of trees. So, the truck will be put to good use.

 

Thanks again, for all your help! I will track the MPG and give an update in about two weeks of how that has changed (if any).

Stan, so glad you got your truck back and everything is working great! Glad GM did a good job for you.

 

I've had two vehicles in my life that had catastrophic engine failures.

 

After researching both cases, one was built on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (4-day-weekend).

 

The other was the Wednesday before the 4th of July (4-day-weekend).

 

I'm not saying this was the cause. But it certainly does raise an eyebrow.

    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?. 
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
