Help with wheels (Chrome vs Black

Alright guys... So I thought I had it all planned out. But now I am second guessing myself. Originally I wanted to get ION Alloy 183 20x10 wheels. But some how the order got messed up. So I had to cancel that and that got me thinking about other possibilities. I really wanted to go with chrome. However, I do like the BMF Sota stealth wheels. I have always said that I would never put black wheels on my truck since everyone has them on theirs. However, I am finding that they are cheaper then most chrome wheels. So what do you think would look best on my truck. I plan to run a 1.75" spacer also.

This is the truck as it sits now. Minus the mud flaps

This is option 1 - Ion 183 chrome wheels

Option 2 - Gear 726 chrome

Chrome n white is classy. Flat black wheels just disappear.

Chrome.

I have to say, I am really sick of seeing blacked out vehicles. People are STILL doing it because they seem to think its cool. It is completely overdone, it's just stupid. It's like people who buy a $50,000 truck, then go and destroy a nice clear coat paint job in favor of a matt finish. Are you TRYING to make your vehicle look like junk yard garbage?

Society is full of sheep. One person blacked out their vehicle, everyone else started doing it, just because it's the "fad" right now.

Many people run black wheels because of winter weather, they can keep them on through the salt months and it doesn't kill the rim. I think a white truck with chrome wheels looks great so the Ion gets my vote.

On your list I would choose Gear 726 but I'm not totally fun of chromes. Black wheels hide the real beauty of wheels. You might want to consider black machined or black & milled wheels like some on these Fuel Wheels

Get the chrome, black wheels do hide the look of the rims and it also looks like a black hole in your wheels wells from a distance as they blend in with the color of the tire.

You say the black rims are cheaper but look at it this way you put the black rims on your truck then after awhile you don't like them now you have to go out and buy another set of chrome rims, black rims are to bland looking.

Black rims on a white truck look horrid....looks like painted steel rims no matter how intricate they are. Chrome shines from afar and close up!

But it's your truck, what do you like? Do a Google Image search and you will see plenty of options.

I guess I'm the only one that likes black more than chrome on a white truck. I think the black would match better on your truck being that you have black accents and I don't see any chrome on the truck other than the mesh in the grille that looks chrome in the pic. Instead of all black, maybe black and chrome or black with machined edges so it's not all black. Plus it's a lot less care than chrome rims.

I personally would go with black.. And the gear and ions are low quality rims IMO. The bmf's are a high quality rims

I like chrome and I like black depending on how each is done. I've always been a fan of the storm trooper look though, id say some type of black wheel but not a completely black wheel, need some sort of accents.

If you do some trail and some light mud rides, chrome may not be a good idea for it debris can sure damage the finish. I think BMF SOTA stealth wheels would be a better choice.

This right here. I used to always buy chrome rims but went with black the last 2 times I've bought them. When I had chrome I took them off for winter. With the black ones I ran them all year and they hold up way better. To each their own. I agree with the other guys though, chrome looks nicer on a white truck than black does.

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
