And is it more of a southern thing? (less harsh winters?)

Had to replace the battery in my 2010 Sierra just a couple of months back...it lasted right at 5 years

I usually get 8-9 years out of them but if they ever go dead and set the life is cut drastically.

OP - since you said the battery set dead, it is time for a new one.

My 2006 Sierra SLT 4x4 actually entered serice in October 2005. I replaced the original battery in March of 2016. I figure anything more than 5 years and you're on borrowed time. If I get 6 years, I'm ahead of the game. I take my truck waaay out on logging roads, to trailheads for hiking, etc. A good high-end battery is a LOT cheaper than the price of a tow when they have to come in from 100 miles away. This winter I plan to put in the dual battery mod. Right now I carry a portable jumper pack just in case.

Got almost 6 1/2 years out of the factory-original battery in my '09 LT crew cab. Replaced it on Easter Sunday, just before an out-of-town trip to a family gathering. Might have had one more day of service in it, but I didn't trust it. Had been starting s-l-o-w for a couple of days. (Stuff always happens when you don't want it to. . . ) Couldn't believe how small (both in dimensions and amperage) the original battery was, especially considering it's in a truck with all of the power accessories! That was the shortest service life that I'd ever gotten out of a battery in a new vehicle.

Batteries usually start to sulfate when they are getting older, or have went dead and sat dead for a bit. However, they can be recovered with a special charger, such as those made by Optimate. These chargers will desulfate a battery and let you get more years from them. However, the process takes a while; ie 4 weeks or so....

Interesting. First time I've ever heard of this.

My last one lasted over 4 years, and it was cheap and small. The new one is 775 CCA and AGM so I'm hoping for even better from it.
