Buying Advice 1500 / 2500

I just did the same calculation and yes the 6.0 would be a little more compared to the 6.2 but honestly the difference is nothing that would stop me from buying a 2500

For your needs, I would suggest you try and find a 6.2 ltr with the max tow PKG 3.73 rear end vs. the 3.23 that supposedly equates to the 3.42 mated with new transmission.

FWIW - I've found even w/ a green (less than 500 miles) engine on my 6.2 8 speed '15 I'm getting 1-1.5mpg better than I was on my 5.3 6 speed 3.42 truck (running premium in both)...it may even be better than that really once the 6.2 gets broken in and the tranny gets more adjusted to my driving style...and I've been in some traffic situations too.

 

When the 5.3 gets the 8 speed I think it'll be better overall (and you can run 87)

Well long story short I bought a 2500HD SLE with Z71 package! Took it for a test drive and it actually feels like a truck unlike the 1500 and will handle everything I'll throw at it in the future

Congrats on the truck! I just traded my 14 1500 for a 15 2500HD with the Allison/Duramax package. Ride is firmer, but not harsh in any way. I notice the hydraulic power steering more than anything. It's quiet, and the fuel mileage difference is negligible.

6.2 1500 or Duramax 2500 / 3500. Don't get the 6.0 HD. Unless you want to get 12 - 14 mpg city and maybe 16 - 17 highway. The 6.0 is a proven reliable motor but lugging that 2500 / 3500 around makes it drink fuel. The Duramax is an extra 8K but 19 - 22 highway mpg, 397hp 765tq stock, EXCELLENT resale value.

 

6.2 8-speed has got to be a blast to drive. And decent mpg too.

I cross-shopped the 2500 6.0 with a 1500 5.3 with 3:42 gears. The only things I preferred about the 1500 was the athleticism and gas mileage. The 1500 actually felt like my Chevy Equinox with a better engine and a longer wheelbase.

 

I ended up going with the 2500 for various reasons:

 

1. There's more to towing than just the number; weight of the tow vehicle, brakes, suspension, ride height, frame, etc. all play a role.

2. Longevity and durability (HD frame, proven 6.0 vs. direct injection cylinder deactivation V8s)

3. Styling - the HDs just look and feel more substantial (but the 1500s look good too with the right options)

4. Price - The 2500 was not that much different than the 1500; the only tradeoff was the 1500 would have had a few more luxury options

The only reason I didn't buy a 2500 HD was the cost. I went to the dealer really thinking I wanted the 2500. When I got there though I found that a HD with all options that I wanted was crazy expensive and I couldn't justify spending that much on a truck (wife would have killed me). So I took ownership of a fully loaded 1500 SLT instead. At the end of the day I couldn't be any more satisfied and glad I went the route I did.
