Clear coat on wheels peeling badly

I've had the truck for almost a year and the truck has around 14,000 miles on it. The clearcoat on my wheels has been peeling horrendously the past couple of months now and I have no idea what is causing it. I hand wash my wheels and I'm sure the pressure I apply is not enough to rip the clearcoat off that easily. Is this something GM covers or am I responsible for the damage???

Have you taken it to the dealer?

its still under warranty that should be your first step

Not yet, I'm scheduled for next week to go in so they can inspect it. The service guy said it's probably not covered under bumper to bumper warranty, but see if it's a factory defect.

They should warranty that, if not contact another dealer.

I know for sure that corroded and peeling chrome from the wheels were indeed covered under the factory bumper to bumper warranty on my 2012 Silverado.

Is that them new fake wheels?

I saw a Malibu that had a chunk missing from the wheel, however, it held air and apparently did not affect the performance.

How a wheel can lose a piece and still function is over my head! Athough, on my 97 Z28, I hit a rock in the road and damaged the 16" chrome wheel. A good sidewall(where you put the old lead weights) was broken, but they mounted and balanced a new tire, so who knows?

That is just a lazy dealer if they say they are not covered under the B2B warranty as they indeed are covered. Unless there is explicit language in the warranty booklet stating that an item or parts are not covered under the B2B warranty then the dealer has no right to deny the claim.

You mean the chrome clad wheels with the chrome plastic wheel covers glued to plain alloy wheels? Nope

His wheels are a painted version of the 20" chrome pvd wheels that a lot of silverados come with. Looks like surface of the wheel was contaminated before being painted.

Looks like the de-icing crap they put on the roads in Colorado. Mag Chloride. I had a set of wheels like that crack and peel on my H2 back in '03. They were aftermarket KMC wheels and KMC replaced all 5 under warranty! (4 plus spare)

Welcome to gm wheels. This has been going on since the mid to late 90's. Look at almost any gm aluminum wheel that is more than a year old at least here in MI. My wifes traverse ltz wheels are even worse than that. I dislike aftermarket rims so i will probably end up getting them striped and powder coated.

It's covered but expect it to reoccur within 8 - 10 months after they send it out for repair. It is caused by their shitty vendors who don't manage their processes.

Had the same issue on our Traverse - they were repaired but it came back in less than a year and by then we were beyond the bumper to bumper warranty. I never saw another Traverse that had the same issue as ours. But what do you expect when GM expects a 5% reduction in piece price from their vendors annually.

The clear coated wheels on my '09 Impala started corroding less than a year after I bought the car. They were replaced under warranty, but I believe the replacement wheels where either refurbished or clear coated to a better spec because they have held up quite nicely. There are only a few spots, but they look a lot better after five years than the original wheels looked after less than one year.

Silver painted aluminum wheels are the best - they almost never corrode. Why do most manufacturer insist on clear coated polished wheels? they are absolutely impractical in most areas - in the rust belt, as well as Eastern coastal region.

Yes I had a set changed on my 07 Colorado as they pitted after the first winter. The replacement wheels had been done with a different process as you could see a difference just looking at them.

It had no issues after that.

Don't let them tell you it's not covered..
