Android Auto Update Arrives

As said and to re-iterate, the 2014 and 2015 trucks will not be able to get this from GM. 2014 for sure cant handle it, when the 2015 trucks came out the hardware and software were completely different than the 2014 truck, same goes for the 2016 trucks. Nothing on our system is backwards compatible at all. That is the whole reason GM never fixed the radio issues on the 2014 trucks by putting the 2016 system into them, it would have required a full on redo of wiring, hardware and software in order to get the 2016 system into a 2014/15 truck.

Good to see the update is out, I will be picking up the new truck on Tuesday so I while they are swapping my exhaust and wheels over I am going to have them do this update as well.

Ok can the 14-15 models have I05 or I06 radio also?

I keep seeing it needs to be a vehicle with those radios but I have a 15 model that has the I06 radio. I ordered it like right as the 16 were coming out.

The reason it's confusing is because if the I05/I06 has different hardware(which I'm not debating they do) then they should have given it a different RPO code in my opinion which would make it easier ordering/dealing with if there's issues. They've always done upgrade/new systems with new codes. Just like how I read there was an I03/I04 radio that was out before but they somehow changed it up and made it faster etc, so then they updated the RPO codes to match the newer radio

That would be like apple coming out with the iPhone 6s, but calling it the 6. Imagine the headache for the customer service people or someone trying to find help for it. They look the same, but not... Interesting.

GM may have done that, but that would be very sad even on GMs level.

Technology is great, but sometimes it just plain sucks!

Just got done getting the update, took them about an hour and a half to install. Everything works very well and it literally doesnt let you use your phone while the android auto is running. As soon as you hit the homescreen on your phone to exit out it will disconnect the android auto function until you start it back up again. But it also give a great view of driving directions versus the "on star turn by turn", which I didnt like. You have to have a legit phone cord in order for it to work as well, at first I tried to connect with a general usb cord from a bluetooth speaker, and it wouldnt let me connect until i grabbed my phone cord from the house. But so far everything works great with it, very easy to use. Have to hit the mic button on the screen in order to use the voice commands for directions, you cant use the speak button on the steering wheel or else it will try to make a phone call. But overall a great update for the 2016's, sorry 14 and 15 guys.

Also important for 40/20/40 seats... use the usb in your glovebox, NOT a usb in the armrest

Thanks for the review. I can wait a little while for this.

Says model year 2016, yours is a 2015, don't see it happening.

To everyone who wants this in a 2014 or a 2015 you need new modules. See this thread for the details http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/184124-vendor-mvi-apple-carplay-android-auto-updates/

Despite what some say I'm interested in checking more. From my experience with GM(this my 5th Silverado) wiring different speaker systems up in all of them, the factory works with what they got. So when getting under the dash in the past things don't match up to what guides say should be there.

I'm in the same boat as you, I actually ordered my truck right when the 2016s was rolling out. It might be a stretch but worth looking more into. They might just refuse to:/ trying to keep it for 2016 models.

If you look at my post above in this thread I brought what I felt like was good points. Why is the newer model radio I06 when my truck has the I06....but they tend to change the RPO code when there's no models come out. It's creates ordering parts a nightmare if that's true that there's an old I06 model radio and a new I06 radio. And it further doesn't make sense cause they had older radios that look and operate just like ours that had RPO codes of I03 and I04, and they made a faster model with bugs fixed that is the I05 and I06. So clearly they create new RPO codes for newer models.

It's like thinking apple would release the iPhone 6s under the name iPhone 6. They both look the same, but run different and have different features. If every company operated like that then it would be impossible to keep up with.

I think the majority of people just get on here and and read 2016 and go with that set in stone. I didn't even notice the vin# date you did. That further points towards it being possible. It help my argument that the newer models were in the plant when the last of the 2015s were rolling off the like, and for whatever reason they used them. Maybe because they had to hold off on the 2016s longer than expected, continued to roll out 2015s longer than expected instead of stopping production for the hold up on the 2016s, then ran out of the older model radios, instead of making an order of the old radios not knowing how many exactly they would need in the gap of time, so they used the newer model they already had on hand.

I may be silly but it makes perfect sense to me

So for the long reply above, but it's my thoughts so far

    • You are winning more than battles. You're winning the war!  Nice.
    • Blazer is all put back together. Another hard-won battle. The 4.3 is not easy to work on in such an archaic and narrow chassis originally designed for an inline 4.   My baffle issue is solved. I returned to the OG junkyard but was ready for a fight. The Blazer I had picked from was stacked on another vehicle so I had no idea how the heck I was going to get myself to working height to pull the front end apart. I had seen an S10 pickup on the ground so I was hoping the part would be the same, AND, I couldn't remember if the S10 still had a front end or not. But I didn't need to worry because it turned out to be my lucky day. The yard had just taken in a '98 Blazer, sitting right up front, on the ground, with room to work around it, and the front end hadn't been hit. The baffle and all the clips were factory perfect. I also scored another good handful of odds/ends and the whole shebang only cost me $20.   Got everything back together and it fired right off, sounds good, runs good. I've got a little coolant drip from a lower water pump bolt (D'OH!!). I did the right thing and snugged it down a little bit, and of course that didn't fix it. Yet again, I will have to soak everything in coolant to drain it down to the water pump, remove the bolt, and attempt to re-seal it. Nothing is easy on this truck. Nothing. But now all the radiator plastics are correct, snug, and fully functional. No more rubbing on the cooling fan. It runs, drives (took it for a 30 mile drive last night), no Check Engine lights, EGR is working, no vacuum leaks. We're getting closer...   The replacement wiper motor arrived yesterday. The tailgate was already disassembled and waiting, so I threw that in. It works! Sort of. Two new issues on the list. While the motor is strong enough and the gears aren't stripped, the wiper is hanging up on the bottom of the rear glass. This is the old style where the lower half folds down like a truck tailgate, and the glass swings up, and they meet in the middle when closed. The glass isn't sitting flush with the tailgate, now that I look at it. No rubber bumpers that I can see for adjusting, so I'll have to look at the hinge adjustment to see if I can correct it. Also, the washer/squirter just dumps fluid underneath the truck. The lines actually run inside on the floor so I'm guessing the tailgate is soaked at the rear trim and the line is disconnected. There's also a drain there....probably for this reason.   The leaky water pump bolt was really disappointing. JUST STOP LEAKING...OMG!!   Replacing the window motor and a rear door speaker are still to do, and then everything will work. I want this to feel like a "good" vehicle worthy of dropping $600 for new tires before I do. That means no leaking first. I hurt, and I'm kind of cranky, so I'll probably take a day of rest and do the water pump again tomorrow.
    • Just saw on Jay Leno the new Scout. That’s the way it should be done.
    • EV's have their nuances too. Best to operate the current type of lithium batteries between 20-80% charge. No real need to charge until you hit around 20%. Occasionally charge to 100% when needed. Longer term storage, battery should be 50-60%. At least those are the guidelines for our iX. We've been exceptionally good to the battery in that car...easy to do when you can charge at home like we can.   EV's lack so many of the rituals and so much of the visceral feeling ICE vehicles provide, which is why I think they're hard to accept for a lot of gearheads. They're fun in different ways, though.
    • We have got a lot of rain lately, we needed it. Storms/lightning took out a floor fan. Dirt roads badly rutted from run off.   Power here is sketchy, whole house surge protector in the service panel and all electronics plugged into surge protectors. My biggest concern is my stereo, I've been an audio nut for years. $25 k in equipment. Stereo is on it's own special surge protector.
