Android Auto Update Arrives

No it is not. You are saying the console/armrest USB ports DO NOT connect to the stereo/radio/carplay/android, and that is INCORRECT.

The armrest/console usb ports, on the 2016 Silverado models, DO CONNECT for carplay/android connectivity. If they were "charge only" like on a few other chevy models (albeit those are in different spots on the car) they would be labeled as such.

For instance, in the chevrolet traverse, the center console (backside) has charge only ports that only charge devices. These same vehicles have one charge port in the front under the hvac controls that connects/tethers to the radio.

This is fact, I own one and I sell these things all day.

I own one and sell them also. I am the dealerships CTE and the training that I took said use the white USB plug for carplay. The ones in the armrest aren't white. They can connect, but not reliably. There are other threads where people have plugged in to the armrest usb plugs and had intermittent success with them and that is why GM recommends using the white one in the glovebox

There is nowhere in any literature that says you have to use the glovebox usb port - there is also nowhere that states the console/armrest usb's have "intermittent success".

One thing that pushes most knowledgeable people AWAY from forums are the many people that make false claims and then defend them to the death. It is a waste of time.

Why should anybody who actually lives this stuff day by day, and wants to help others, have to deal with being forced falsified information? Then when a correction is made, they make crazy claims. Again, I wasted my time checking on this, and nowhere is what this person is stating written..... So ultimately I will just browse this forum - since the know it alls have taken over.

On top of this, I have delivered a few dozen 2016 silverados to date, and at least with apple car play , there is no intermittentcy to the way it works. I always use the center console plugs when I am displaying the tech, and they have never failed. The gm trainers that come to my dealership are usually less knowledgeable than a few of the staff members. We are the #6 dealership in the country. I am the #4 salesman in the state. Also, based on the treatment and attitudes here, I plan on not posting further.

You won the internet today.... yay you. I'm not here for a bitch fight... go spread your awesomeness around now.

I am GM for a dealership and I am the CTE. I've taken the courses and have the nice little certificate. Wipe your ass with it, I don't care. You seem to enjoy forums for arguing. So, you win. I'm done with this topic

I got my truck updated today. Was able to get the Android Auto to connect once in my 4 trips. To make it work I had to unhook my iPod and USB drive (I'll explain why both later on) and then my truck saw the phone. It only worked for me being plugged into the center console.

I went back out to my truck tonight and again it wouldn't connect. I unhooked everything and it still wouldn't connect. I did what another member suggested and unsynced my phone and it showed up right away.

I'm a little concerned with the connectivity issues with the IntelliLink system. I'm having the same issues with my iPod (120 GB Classic) that other members are having where it will play 2-3 songs and then completely lock up. I'm also seeing the iPod show up as "My Library" and as iPod when I hit media. The only thing that works consistently using a USB thumb drive to play music or Bluetooth audio.

Yeah, the connectivity on these things is unreliable for sure. I gave up on my ipod, and I now only use a USB key and occasionally Bluetooth audio from my phone. At least once a week, I come out to the truck and find that it does not recognize the USB key. When it does find it, it needs to recatalog the entire library. Very frustrating. Something so simple should just work.

I was hopeful that this update may fix this problem, but it sounds like it might not. Disappointing. I hope it does not add new problems, because I was really looking forward to using Android Auto.

Here's my take on Android Auto. The bad:

It's inconvenient to plug in my phone every time for short trios around town and easy to forget your phone if you do. Bluetooth connectivity is probably coming soon, hope hope.

The good:

Google Music, Google Maps and texts work much like You are using your phone. There are also other apps (with more to come) that expand choices. Before (with Bluetooth)I had to use my phone to change playlists or go to an album. Now it's available onscreen. Google Maps didn't work all that well using my phone before AA, OK for a quick trip in town. Google Maps is much better than the improved Nav on the 16's....up to date maps, construction & traffic delays....just the best there is. And with AA if you stop for gas it resumes right where you left off just like the factory system. Same with music.

For a first gen product it's working very well for me and it should only get better since updates will come through your phone vs having the dealer charge for and install them. There will always be limitations since GM isn't giving away full control.

By the way-my 2 year old iPod nano was locking up every time I used it. So I took some time to update and download my Google Music playlists to my phone. (So I don't burn data.) I also took a thumb drive and downloaded my music and found that it works as well as the iPod. You can access Artist, Album & Playlists onscreen. Don't need the iPod and now have a backup. I use MediaMonkey on my PC so I don't know how other media players will work. I think GM lists formats that will work.

Edit: My phone is a Moto X Pure running very close to stock Android 6.0, no skins like some phones.

This is the reason I'm not rushing to get this update. Question... can you see your text on the big screen while moving? The only real benefit of the update is so I can use the phone navi on my truck screen... which is rarely needed. Otherwise, I would never plug it in. I get all my music off my USB port.

Do you have anything else plugged into the USB ports? I can only get mine to work with just my phone plugged in. I'm using a Nexus 6P which is as stock Android as you can get.

I too hope it will work over Bluetooth some day. That will simplify the process so much!

It will NEVER work over bluetooth. It will work over wifi. Too much data to be moved over bluetooth.

I leave my USB thumb drive plugged in always and my phone to use AA. Maybe the music file isn't one that works on GM. I'm not up on that aspect but read somewhere, (maybe the manual) what is supported.

As far as BT working it will work fine if the Nav map is downloaded while connected USB. Google already supports that in maps. Also the route map could be pared down small enough for basic guidance, IMO. We shall see only the Googlers know for sure. Phone, music and texting work now with BT.

Looks like the Nav thinks it went 'home' to the GM tech centre.

Top RH corner is showing it's not getting a gps signal. (red line thru 'gps' lettering)

Maybe disconnect battery or pull fuse to force it to reboot.
