So both my BPS G7 LED bulbs died this weekend. I've been running them for just under two years (March 2016). I'm planning on upgrading to DDM 55W HID. I've run at least 4 or 5 sets with no issues but most people run Morimotos on here so thinking about that as well.

Not sure if it can be an issue with running 50w or 55w in the stock projector headlights, read elsewhere that they can cause burning of the bowls due to temps?

I went with the 35w Morimotos, hoping to avoid any issues.

If it wasn't an issue then why did they re-flash the ECU to send 14V to the headlights... My Vosla bulbs lasted 3 months...

They won't admit to anything to avoid the expense to correct the poor performance of the headlights on these trucks.

I hated driving my truck in the dark with the stock headlights and installed the Morimoto Elite 35w HID kit from The Retrofit Source for $170.

We shouldn't need to have to upgrade headlights on a vehicle for what we pay for them, but why wait and hope GM stands up and helps (they won't) and risk driving and not being able to see where your going?

I am looking to do an upgrade on headlights myself, would you recommend this brand? Do you have any pics?

I'd recommend this brand, so far I haven't had any issues and we have had subzero temps here in Wisconsin for several days so cold weather testing has went well :)

On page 123 of this thread I have pics of the installation, using Fondupot's YouTube video for reference.  Haven't taken any pics outside at night.

Purchased the HID kit from The Retrofit Source and they were quick to respond and answer any & all questions I had-no complaints!

I’ve emailed the retrofit source (TRS) with an on going HID issue and have not heard back in 3 days. Any one on here work for them that can help me out?

so im still fighting GM on the headlight issue.
i got a little attention from them on one of their facebook posts but they are stonewalling me.

the reply i got after going back and forth with them in DM on FB and them pulling my service records again...

i love the part where she says my concern has been addressed... they put new bulbs in and they blew out again...and again and again.

im not going to give up on fighting them on it..

ive honestly been waiting for the 2019 redesign to trade in on either a 19 or a 20 but now with the BS they are giving me just over headlights ive really been thinking about going to another brand.

my last 4 vehicles have all been GM....ive been loyal to the brand but now they cant even get headlights to work on a truck i spent $50,000 on.

ive been told by transport canada to sue GM and that i will win...i dont really want to go that route but hell i may have to... i dont want aftermarket headlight...i just want the damn things to work properly.

EaZ8, no surprise of the response you have received from GM on this issue.

GM seems to care less about customer satisfaction AND safety of existing customers.

Wouldn't blame anyone to look at other options when it comes time to get another vehicle.

Have you considered installing an aftermarket lighting kit in your truck?

At this time that is about the only way to improve the lighting quality in your truck as I see it.

Several of us have installed a HID kit and have had very good results.

i just dont think i should have to go with aftermarket, thats what everyone has been doing and GM is getting away with a defective part because of it.  guaranteed they monitor these forums and they see the complaints, they see everyone just fixing the issue themselves.

if anyone has documented headlight complaints, specifically them blowing out too often i would love to get a hold of their vin so i can get their service records to add some fuel to my complaint...and if i do decide to sue i want to make sure i have proof its not a 1 off issue.

Wish I bought a 2016.... the 2015 lights are dangerous and for the money, wow, rip off!

Went aftermarket HID. Good kit although having an issue now with a ballast. The last thing I want to deal with in New England temperatures and with a $50k truck.

I agree that we shouldn't need to go to the aftermarket and spend $$ to correct the issue but to date what has GM done, other than a supposed upgraded Vosla-brand  bulb that doesn't last and to me was worse than the Philips bulbs.  Many have stated the replacement bulbs didn't last.

I wouldn't expect to see GM step up to help.

I can't believe that GM hasn't done anything to fix this issue. I hated driving my Sierra at night... Sure don't miss it for that.

    • I know when I was looking around last year to see if someone handled Amsoil gear oil to buy at the retail level which of course means full price. I found an independent shop that works a lot on GM/Duramax pickups and they did not bring in the 75W-85 as they just stuck to the 75W-90 for the front and rear as a standard practice for the HD trucks which makes sense anyway for the higher hp/torque diesel and pulling heavy loads in four wheel drive. I haven't changed my diff oils yet but still plan on using the 75W-85 for the front diff as I highly doubt I will be beating on the truck and figured for my use type the bit thinner oil would be to my benefit for the winter for that slightly less drag. Very different weather here all winter vs northern Washington near the coast, that's for sure.
    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.
    • Good looking truck, suspensionmaxx looks like a solid option
    • Thanks for the info, im considering a leveling kit or 4" lift kit.
    • charm.li (website) has the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure for that code, you can use to find what the cause of it is.
