Like the Silverado last week, Chevy has now updated the Colorado midsize pickup for the 2017 model year. The biggest change is the all-new engine and transmission which we reported on in detail earlier this week. Below are the 2017 Model Year updates in full:

 

Mechanical Changes:

- New Engine and Transmission Codes LGZ & MT5 3.6L DI DOHC V6 VVT (Details at link above)

 

Exterior Changes:

- NEW Custom Special Edition Code PCP, includes (VAT) body-color grille, LPO, (D75) body-color door handles, (DL6) outside power-adjustable, body-color, remote, manual-folding mirrors, (VT5) body-color rear bumper, (PZX) 18" Dark Argent Metallic cast aluminum wheels and (IOB) Chevrolet MyLink Radio with 7" diagonal color touch-screen
1 - Not available with (PCX) Work Truck Appearance Package.

- New LPO Stripe Package Code SB7, low gloss Black, includes hood and tailgate

- New LPO Front fog lamp kit Code S3U

- NEW LPO, Cargo divider Code SIZ

Interior Changes:

- NEW Audio system Code IOB, Chevrolet MyLink Radio with 7" diagonal color touch-screen, AM/FM stereo with seek-and-scan and digital clock, includes USB ports, auxiliary jack, Bluetooth streaming audio for music and most phones; featuring Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability for compatible phone

1 - Included with (PCP) Custom Special Edition. Includes (UE1) OnStar and (VV4) OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

- New Teen Driver Mode Code TDM, a configurable feature that lets you activate customizable vehicle settings associated with a key fob, to encourage safe driving behavior. It can limit certain vehicle features, and it prevents certain safety systems from being turned off. An in-vehicle report gives you information on your teen's driving habits and helps you to continue to coach your new driver

Yeah, I don't know... I loved my '97 4Runner. Sold it for $4500 with 165000 miles on it. That was two weeks after picking up my new **loaded** 2015 GMC Canyon SLE. Added an ICON suspension with nice 20" wheels/tires, etc, etc... While it sure looks better that 'ol Toyota, I kinda wish I still had it. I can't stand the way this truck drives. The Canyon doesn't know when to shift, or what gear to be, and it's even a bit under-powered, I'd say, for 306HP. The vehicle electronics are a joke compared to even the least inexpensive Japanese vehicles on the market... IntelliLink is an abomination - try to use the navigation and the usual response is "Pardon?" Yes, I'm EXTREMELY disappointed. I liked my OLD Chevy Vega more than this damn truck. The only good thing I can say is that I (thought) I got a great deal using my Employee Discount (my brother was GM employee for 35 years...). I'm sure I'll be trading it in very soon - and I doubt it will be a new *better* Canyon.

Guessing your test drive was pretty short? Ouch,

Pretty much everything you listed could be found on a test drive, guess you learned a lesson on that one.

Yeah, you're sort of right! I learned my lesson. But keep in mind that I hadn't bought a new vehicle since the '97 4Runner... I think a dealer needs to allow one to take the vehicle home (a loaner, maybe...) and return it a day or two later. I live in Reno, and my test drive was in town, highway and freeway, but no hills... I live in the hills above Reno and that's where the shifting issues would have really showed up. During the test drive, I don't think many people will check out the Infotainment system, other than to see if the speakers sound OK, and the Bose system does very well! But who the hell would use the navigation on a freakin' test drive? I guess that's why they offer OnStar, which I also got... In any event, I know they did a major upgrade to the electronics in 2016. I guess I'll just have to live with the "First Edition Blues". Maybe I got spoiled by my company-supplied work vehicles for the past 8 years... A new Toyota Sienna every two years and the electronics were so far ahead of this NEW GMC. In the Sienna, I could have conversations with the vehicle - in the Canyon I find myself yelling obscenities at it. And that ol' Runner? I just drove the hell out it... Now it's parked in my neighbor's driveway ready for the next 10 years of its life.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
