$1400 sounds pretty high. But AC work seems to be very high compared to other service. That's the main reason I bought all the equipment to service AC myself about 10 years ago. The cost of the gauges, vac pump, and other miscellaneous tools is way less than many places bill you to re-charge a system.

 

It hasn't been all roses though. I've had my share of learning mistakes where I've replaced parts that didn't need it. This latest work on my K2 is an example. I chased the leak based on internet chatter about the lines. I bought all new lines, then noted that the compressor had been superseded due to problems I was seeing on the net too. So, I thought it may be the compressor. I even vacuum checked the condenser and evaporator with an isolation plate I made. They both vacuum checked fine. That's why I thought it was something other than the condenser and evaporator. Only after I had changed the lines and compressor and it didn't hold a charge for more than a few days did I re-check the evaporator and condenser with my adapter, using high pressure instead of vacuum. That revealed the condenser leak.

 

So, I've spent more on parts than I needed to. Probably $500 more this time around. Still with the $500 for the new compressor and lines, plus the $240 I paid for the condenser, I'm sitting pretty well inside the going rates for a condenser replacement, plus I have an almost completely new, latest configuration, system, except for the evaporator. Of course, I spent a bunch of time working on it. No free lunches...I guess.

Just traded my silverado in for a 2017 Ram Power wagon. Just too many problems and dislikes with the silverado.

If I ever got a non-GM truck, the Power Wagon would be my first choice. Probably the most practically configured vehicle ever.

Even though it was all a lot of work and expense and all,you felt pretty good when you were done and it worked as it's supposed to,huh? I've done very similar with both my Burbs and having good A/C in wifey's Burb is mandatory lol,cuz we all know what happens if wifey ain't happy :)

Gary, good to hear from you. And over on the "electronic truck" forum too! LOL

 

Yeah gotta keep wifey happy. We took my truck up to Paso Robles back in April or May with the AC inop. Even with only 80f highs, she gave me the evil eye.

 

Fixing any problem and even maintenance is gratifying. I just did the front brakes on the Camaro. I don't do my wife's car maintenance. She has a mechanic she trusts. In rare cases I'll work on her cars. It's not just about saving money, its therapy for me. When it gets to where I don't get that feeling of satisfaction, I'll pay for it to be done.

I'll bet going 80 an no A/C you probably had the windows down,that couldn't have been good for her hair do.That's where the evil eye comes in lol.

2014 and the condenser went at 72000km. Called GM customer service and they said they would cover 25%. I have had countless issues with my truck that I am selling it and getting a Toyota, my brother has been a mechanic for 19 years and seen it all and he recommended from when I was looking for trucks " get a Toyota I never see problems" wish I would of listened.

You and your brother need to read all the complaints about the new Tacoma. Bad rear diffs with a 3-4 month wait to repair.

2014 and the condenser went at 72000km. Called GM customer service and they said they would cover 25%. I have had countless issues with my truck that I am selling it and getting a Toyota, my brother has been a mechanic for 19 years and seen it all and he recommended from when I was looking for trucks " get a Toyota I never see problems" wish I would of listened.

Damn I got the a/c leak virus!!! And I live in Houston!!! I haven't taken anything apart yet, i still had a bit of pressure the first time I started getting hot air, so I just added more refrigerant. The second time I went to auto zone and "borrowed" their manifold gauges and vacuum pump. The system held vacuum for about an hour. So I recharged it. Lasted a week. Now I went to harbor freight (I think I'm starting to like that store) and bought the gauges to be able to see what's going on. Tomorrow I'll be pulling vacuum to see what happens, but I feel like if it is the condenser, I might be able to hold vacuum again... is this a good hypothesis?

 

2015 Texas edition, 37,000 miles. No extended warranty. I feel like I could give this repair a try, I'm inclined to turn wrenches and know a bit about HVAC, so I'll start looking into it. But I'm so disappointed in GM. I always wanted a Chevy truck, but not like this.

Sorry to share the bad news, but a new condenser is probably in your near future. Recommend you find a quality aftermarket piece.

New Condenser

 

This is the aftermarket condenser that my Chevy dealer installed under warranty. They asked first before they installed the aftermarket if I was okay with aftermarket. It does have quite a bit more meat where the trans cooler is mounted to the condenser. Should be a little better than factory anyway. He told me that they got 9 condensers in on Friday before I was at the dealer. I was there on Monday morning and they only had 3 left. I took the aftermarket and have been happy ever since.

Get a flashlight and peer through the grill to get a look at the condenser. If there is a leak, you should see a wet oily area near where the leak is. Mine was on the driver's side up at the braze/weld where all of these condensers seem to have the leak...

The aluminum colored aftermarket condensers would bother me on an all black truck.

    • Its no wonder you've gravitated to the oil types and brands you have in later years after trying certain brands and one being a specialty oil or at least very hard to come by up here and the other would have been a commonly found oil of the era and the vastly different outcomes as a result to using the vehicles in question the same distance for an OCI . It shows what marketing hype can do without actually having the product to back up the claims and that is no different now with the insane claims that are written on the side of a bottle of oil from some of the off the shelf oils.    What has surprised me and I was already finding this out before I bought my truck with the GDI engine, that this newer fancy technology that seemingly would suggest better fuel economy/emissions with this high pressure spray of fuel is not in reality kind at all to the engine or at least the oils life. Yet they insist on claiming long OCI with this technology just like they did with the port or similar type fuel injection systems when in reality its a step back in oil life to have a GDI system.    I think the mistake your making Grumpy is that your not sending your samples to Blackstone and getting the feel good glowing report that you can run it another 1000 or more miles and then send another sample where they say run it yet another 1000 miles and on and on it goes until your sending in something that looks a lot like road tar and then they may suggest you change your oil within the next 1000 miles 😆
    • I am guessing that engines of that design back then had a better ability to be abused and survive longer than a new design engine with the long timing chain and the overhead cams and phasers etc. But I would never guess that an engine could go that far and not fail spectacularly or at least die a slow death. 
    • In the 80's 90's I'd run Honda's 7,500 miles between changes using Red Line HP 5W20 and do it for hundreds of thousands of miles with issues. Back in the day it was an SAE 20 with the HTHS of a SAE 30 and SN add load. It was also very polar. Oxidation VOA was over 120. Besides those motors were SPFI and lean burn tech. I could have likely run it longer but never did.    We had a Toyota bought new I ran on Pennzoil's latest and greatest synthetic of the day with "Penthane". A made up word for a very low dose of PAO. Tried 7,500 mile OCI's in that Group III/VI chemistry and the rings tapped out at 90K. Rocker box wasn't as bad as the one Punch put up but it wasn't good either. Also a SPFI motor.    I'm around 3,750 across the board on these GDI monsters and the oil it tapped out by then usually on TBN/TAN crossover and color. Red Line HP Euro.    The AMSOIL SS brochures tell you to follow the OEM values for the service class but that it can be run up to 25K if monitored. I can't imagine what motor could go that distance and not tap out. I've never owned one.    Yes, I know. Lot's of people do. I'm just not going to be one of them. 
    • I knew a guy in the early 80's that bought a new Monte Carlo and ran it a 100,000 miles without ever changing the filter or the oil. Just kept adding. It looked like that inside.     
    • Good evening. I was lucky enough to get passed down to me a 2007 GMC LBZ that was my great uncle's. While the underside and rockers are more or less gone I feel like with time I can restore it to working order since it only has 110,000 miles and he put nearly every option he could get without getting the new body style since he did not trust DEF. So far I have done everything I can think of but when I put the key into the ignition nothing happens. I put 2 brand new batteries in it. Cleaned the terminals. Check all the fuses and relays and they all pass with my multimeter. I know I'm missing something that I just cant think of. The only odd thing is the OBD2 port works which makes me think its not the mega fuse. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
