I don't think I've ever seen a problem with capless gas tanks, Ford car have been doing it since 2007 or so and I haven't seen a failure yet.

Just bought a 2018 Silverado and I love not having a cap.

Picked up GM's locking gas cap from my dealer. Because I had complained about the potential dirt and water problems with the capless system they gave it to me for free. In any event I took it home and tried it on my truck. It seemed to fit snugly but when I went to take it off, that was another story. The top seems to get caught on the inside of the gas cap and it can be a struggle to get it off. I guess this was GM's idea of a quick inexpensive fix from complaining customers. I will have to make some modifications on this cap to make it fit properly for removal....

I got the same cap for free a while back and also found it to have a poor design when it came to using the lock. I guess I'm lucky that the plastic on the underside of the lock broke yesterday. I now just sit the cap on the circle like you would with Dogditcher's PVC solution posted up above.

So any ideal on what the difference is between the 2017 cap and 2018 cap wouldn't think there be much change in the filler.

Are they different? Capless started with the 2017, I’d assume 2018’s are identical, no?

Nope there isn't just a updated part number but the cap it self is the same. wouldn't waste the money lock is really cheap breaks easy.

I bought one for my 2017. Ya, It’s a piece of junk. Tough to unlock and get off. It now sits in my bench storage compartment.

I was just wondering if something changed between the 2017’s and 2018’s after I read that post.

Man if only GM paid engineers billions of dollars to develop working products prior to releasing to the public....

What if someone at the grocery store or bad neighbors decide to place gummy bears or sugar inside?😪

Get better neighbors?
JK, I don't see an issue as one can do that even with a twist cap.
Had that happen many years ago by the boyfriend of an ex-wife,
Had to drop the tank and clean it out - I saw the sugar before I started the 1978 truck.
I do wish Chevy had an automatic locking gas cover when the doors are locked like my 1990 535i BMW, though, same as my 1990 525i, 1990 750iL.
Interestingly enough, when I bought my truck last year, first thing they had to do was replace the capless fuel filler cap.

I have capless fuel filler on my 2017 Buick Invision. I agree I don't know why anyone would want this. Didn't have the car a month when I inserted filler nozzle and knocked off spring loaded cap which fell down the filler neck. Happened right a time when I was going on extended trip. Was concerned about dirt and moisture Wound putting plastic bag over it until I can fix it.

Did mine about a year after I got my '18 ME Silverado.

Got mine at Lowe's.  Keep the worm clamp for a future project or pitch it.  Measure your fill port diameter first, so you get the correct size.

GM p/n 84689444 / AC Delco GT378.  Comes with a clip that installs in the gas door hinge hole so you don't lose the dust cover (filler cap).
