Not that i won't eventually get this settled and fixed right but any chance we have any gm techs here on the board that could tell me why when i looked into the front grill at my ac condenser that my dealer stated they replaced, that i see what looks like a large piece of silver tape in the upper right hand corner, the tape like hvac people use to seal around sheet metal ducts? I am really thinking my dealer fixed my condenser with tape, yes i said that correctly tape!

 

Now if that's the case i have the evidence on my condenser currently and paperwork that states very clearly that the condenser was bad and replaced. To me this now becomes a case of fraud that the dealer is committing towards the manufacture. Im am trying to call other dealers and ac repair shops to get a little more info to see if this is common practice or if gm has a bulletin stating to try and fix it this way, still though as i said the paper work clearly states it was replaced.

 

I would like a little more info before i call said dealer and unleash a campaign of scorched freaking earth on them!

I am a GM Tech. Lol. The problem with the condensers is the weld. The heat from the transmission causes thermal cycling on the combination transmission fluid/oil and AC condenser cooler creates a crack.

 

The tape... Lol Just as you guessed is... (drum roll) THERMAL TAPE!

 

What it does is transfer the heat from the weld and doesn't allow it to crack. (even though I have replaced the one's with tape leaking in the same place.)

Are you positive this is a heat shield, can anyone else on here please look at your condenser since we have many that have had dealers replace them look to see if yours is the same.

 

Not saying your wrong but im just not convinced the way this looks that is like this from factory.

Check that, i just seen your comment to look back, thanks for the info but this looks like one half arsed fix to be honest, literally looks to me like they just slapped a piece of tape on it and said fixed. In any case at least i know that this was not some patch job my dealer did, it is a patch job that gm did unfortunately.

Edit If you go to the 7:37 min part of this video you can see the tape on the right side of the condenser where I am installing it.

Crazy gm has known problems with this part and instead of fixing it they put duct tape on it, lol this is such a half arsed fix i can do nothing but laugh....

That’s funny, I got a 29 year old truck with the original AC in it. I just did the R-12- to new Freon last year. Don’t make them like they used to.

My 85 has everything factory but the compressor. When I changed the motor to a 383 I updated the ac compressor and retrofit the 134.

The replacement takes more than an hour especially if you pull a vacuum and recharge.

The factory tape band aid is what it.

IMHO aftermarket condensers are made much better than the OEM units.

I think I’m n the same boat as all of y’all, as my 2014 Silverado crew cab LT AC just took crap it’s blowing warm/hot air haven’t looked under the hood as it was hot af in traffic that’s the last thing I wanna do right now is look under the hood. Anybody near Dallas get it fix if so how much?

My condenser just took a crap last week. Repair was $730 and that was not at the dealer. Wish I would have seen this first :(

I usually do. But yes lesson learned. The new condenser doesnt have that thermal tape so I guess fwiw I'll put a piece where the above pic shows. Man this truck has been a money pit since I bought. Last month it was the high pressure fuel pump leaking. That was $1300!

Same here man, bought the truck next thing you know a afm lifter collapsed so I did a dod/afm delete then a tune. Now the AC just took a crap

so I’m it’s hoping nothing major, will see as soon as I take it to get diagnosed

I'm really starting to think about selling my truck and just leasing from here on out, i don't think they are built to last anymore and i truly would rather spend 300 a month on a lease deal then 2 grand here, a grand there and 500 here trying to keep an older vehicle running.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
