I pull 3100 pounds every weekend. Is the 6.2 adequate for that or should I be in a diesel?

6.2 will handle that with ease

Would you pick the 6.2 over a Duramax?

I just sold a 2011 LML and it was a beast. If you are towing daily with heavy loads you can not beat the Duramax. The 6.2 is a different beast. I have not towed yet be some other guys can chime in on that.

If you're not using 91+ in the L86 6.2L you are ****ing up your engine! Stop telling people it's okay.

Try reading the 2017 GMC Owner's Manual...I don't see where it says it will lead to "****ing up your engine." Information below is straight out of the book.....

For the 6.2L engine, premium

unleaded gasoline meeting ASTM

specification D4814 with a posted

octane rating of 93 is highly

recommended for best performance

and fuel economy. Unleaded

gasoline with an octane rated as low

as 87 can be used. Using unleaded

gasoline rated below 93 octane,

however, will lead to reduced

acceleration and fuel economy.

If knocking occurs, use a gasoline

rated at 93 octane as soon as

possible, otherwise, the engine

could be damaged. If heavy

knocking is heard when using

gasoline with a 93 octane rating, the

engine needs service.

You are probably getting away with it due to the higher elevations & do remember NM among others out west having lower octane fuels across the board. Like 85 was the base fuel where as in IL it is 87.

Am sure there is technical data somewhere showing reduced engine knock at higher altitudes or have read it in the past.

I have my interest peak in a new Chevy 6.2. I currently have a 2015 Silverado with 5.3. and 6 speed. Now to my questions....

Is the 6.2 with 8 speed better at towing than the 5.3 with 6 speed? Will it get better MPG towing than 5.3?

I hear the 6.2 needs to run on premium fuel. No one in my area sells 91 octane or E85 so I'm stuck with 93 octane. Is the 6.2 worth 50 cents for a gallon? I can buy diesel cheaper so why not a diesel?

Is it worth trading in the 2015 for? Would probably be looking at $20 Grand to trade.

You can use an app like gasbuddy or a website to shop around fuel prices. There is generally almost $.50 cents a gallon difference among premium fuels in my area & always try to use top tier fuels as well.

But comparing gas prices for 6.2 to diesel in the 6.6 is not an apples to apples comparison for the average buyer.

Well.... it doesn't say anywhere on there I can't use tap water... guess what I'm doing on my next fill up.

Go with bottled water, higher octane. Next Mustang encounter, try Jolt cola.

Why would I put higher octane in if it's not necessary? I've had 7 years of experience with this combination and absolutely zero problems; my elevation is 4000' which probably helps some with octane requirements.

You realize the L86's compression ratio is 11.5:1, right? Sure, you can run 87 in a pinch if you are in the desert where they don't have premium. Your knock sensors will adjust and your ecu will pull timing. You are sacrificing power big time. I agree with the guy who said you're neutering your engine.

i have had 4 of these 6.2's now, 2011/2013/2015/2017. Before that i had 2 of the 5.3's, and my gf has a 2017 with the 5.3. i love the 6.2 especially the 2017 with the updates to the transmission and how smooth it is. The 2015 first year 6.2 with 8 speeds are a little clunky in shifting but the motor is nice. Everyone keeps comparing the 8 speed and 6.2 to the 6 speed 5.3? Starting in 2017 the 5.3 gets the 8 speed transmission also as long as u are in SLT or denali truck packages so if u get a 2017 the 2 engines will be very close in Fuel mileage because they both have the same transmission. My 6.2 gets 20-21 on the highway all day at 75+ but so does my gf's 2016 5.3 with the 8 speed so im not gonna tell u one is better then other in fuel mileage.. The 6.2 is using premium no matter what anyone says (RUN PREMIUM.) If u dont wanna run premium buy the damn 5.3, it pulls just fine and gets great gas mileage and has the 8 speed anyways..? If u wanna have some extra power to play with and if your towing 6000-11000 pounds then get the 6.2. If your towing 2000-4000 lbs u arnt using either truck enough to even notice a difference when it comes to 2017 5.3 or 6.2 both with 8 speeds. Hope that helps, and good luck.. If your in the midwest try out Miller Auto Plaze in St. Cloud MN, under 54000 for a denali ultimate depending on color.

    • Whoever greenlighted the work truck matte black front bumpers on every trim but the AT4X should be fired!  I was hoping that was an AI mistake, but just realized they were on every model of the 2027 Silverado too.     Some parts of the interior do look premium, but the Denali Ultimate dashboard looks like an afterthought.  At least they appear to have lost the microfiber the high end Silverado models showed, but the '27 High Country dash looks better than the Denali.
    • New member here. I am researching a read-first event-recorder concept for late-model GM V8 trucks. This is not a sales post. There is no product link, price, preorder, or mailing list. I am trying to determine whether the underlying problem is real before building anything.   Has your truck ever had a brief problem such as: - rough running or a momentary misfire - an oil-pressure warning or unusual pressure event - reduced power or a brief stall - a U-code or lost-communication problem - a symptom that disappeared before the dealer or independent shop could reproduce it   If so, I would appreciate the following details: - year, model, engine, and mileage - what happened and under what conditions - whether a DTC and useful freeze-frame data were stored - whether the shop was able to reproduce it - what the eventual confirmed repair was, if known - what additional information would have helped the diagnosis   The concept being evaluated is a removable leave-in recorder that continuously retains a rolling window from before and after an event. It would not tune, reflash, clear codes, or change the vehicle calibration.   I am also not claiming that it could predict lifter failure or see every internal ECM variable.   The real question is whether continuous event history would add enough useful evidence beyond freeze frame, GDS2, and existing scan tools — or whether it would simply be another unnecessary gadget.   For owners and technicians, which problem would make something like this genuinely useful: 1. intermittent misfire or AFM/DFM-related behavior 2. oil-pressure events 3. lost communication or electrical faults 4. none of the above Please be blunt. Negative feedback is just as useful as positive feedback.
    • No tears over the SLE and SLT trim levels disappearing but I kind of loathe the "Elevation" name. It's a truck--skip the elegance.   The slab-dashboard design is decidedly different. Almost has a Hummer flavor to it. "Professional Grade" seems to be leaning very white-collar, tech-driven these days moreso than blue-collar, functional design.   The Silverado would be my choice between the two new trucks. Pleased with the engine lineup in both. The GMC is a little "too much" for a truck, IMO, and the Denali borders on ridiculous - but I do know there are buyers for luxury trucks out there. It's just not my speed.

    • - I like the outside but not as much as the Chevrolet.  They ICE'd the EV styling and it works, but I think exterior goes to Chevy on this one.     - SLE and SLT dead = Not.  Surprising.  Fits into the rest of the GMC lineup like this which (aside from Pro) matches the rest of the family.  Elevation, AT4, Denali.     - Interior.  Sophisticated Malaise era.  Why do I say Malaise?  Drawn with a ruler.  Rectangles everywhere.  Looks very premium though.
