PreCut Window Tint?

Hi All,

I'd like to tint the front windows of my new '17 GMC and am considering doing it myself but have a couple questions.

1 - Anyone use a precut kit similar to the link below?

2 - Any tips for installing?  I haven't done this since high school (was ok at it back then) but that was a LOOOONG time ago.

3 - Anyone know what tint percentage the rear windows are?  I'm guessing 35% but not sure if they are slight lighter than that.

Thanks!

If you look at the markings on your rear window it will tell you my '17 says "trans .20" which would leave me to believe 20%. Remember even if you match the tint exactly the fronts will look lighter from the light coming in the windshield. As for doing it yourself that's on you I can hardly get a screen protector on a phone without having dust under it. It was well worth the 250 or so I spent to have my tint installed on sides and rear with lifetime warranty.

It's worth every penny to have it professionally installed. I think it was only $60 for both fronts.

i got mine tints as a gift, but i believe the place i took mine to said my fronts need 18% to match the rears

Just checked & found that it shows "Trans. 20%" on the rear windows.  So that question's now resolved.

Just called around & I've received two quotes for front only tinting that'll match the rear windows.  One at $90 the other at $89, both with their best "ceramic" tint.  May just do that.

Installers are now using computer cutouts.  Saw that when I did mine last year.  Makes sense, less waste for them.  Had 20% Ceramic done all around.  Not quite as dark as regular carbon.

I recently got mine done and went with 15% on the fronts. I think 20% would have been too light for my liking. From the inside, the 5% difference is noticeable but not in a bad way. From the outside, they match perfectly.

I think I kinda agree that I'll just have a professional do this job.  Saves me less than $40 bucks to have it done & I'll end up with a warranty.  The only issue I see now & that in Nevada, the state law limits tint to 35% for front door windows.  Each installer I called said they typically just match the back windows.  Hmmm...

I second the notion for 15%. I was set on 25% but at the last minute decided to do 15%. I ended up with the 15% lumar ceramic on driver and passenger and did 50% metallic over the rear factory tint. It looks a tad darker in the back but I like it makes it slightly legal looking.

For the record you will never match the factory tint from the inside looking out the factory tint has a blue hue in it even if you tint all the windows with the same tint. From the outside you can match it almost perfectly.

In California the front tint limit is 70% and my dad has 18% on his front to match the rears and hasn't had any problems yet. Unless you catch a cop in a bad mood you'll have problems if not you should be fine.

Totally agree as long as you don't wear a bandana with your hoodie on while driving a 1996 honda civic you should be just fine with tinted windows. Law here in Jersey is 35% and in Pennsylvania the law is so vauge they can pull you over for any amount of tint. I have not had one issue not anyone else I know with tint. I would go with what you want and not worry about it.

Didn't realize the color might be an issue.  I'll have to look into that too.

If you also look into doing tint across the top of your windshield, CA Vehicle Code says that you can only do the top 4" of the windshield.  Unfortunately, that leaves a "notch" sticking down below the tint line, for those of us with the lane departure camera.  :(

    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
