.. just in case you thought this was just a GM problem.. nope, appears to be a sliding window with defrost problem.. seems like a pretty common failure on F150 as well (maybe more common)..

Pulled the square 30A # 10 fuse from the under hood fuse box. 

 

The rear defroster button still lights up on remote start but rear window is cold ?  to touch. ?

I’ve been think of pulling the fuse or relay also. Do the heated mirrors still work when the button is pushed?

.. so I was thinking about this window problem as a short resulting in an increase in current flow..and the possibility of introducing some form of current limiting/monitoring to prevent overheating/melting/smoking

..BUT.. I haven't seen any reports of the fuse blowing - this is at its simplest the weak link in the circuit and basic overcurrent protection.. so why didn't it blow? let's assume the current flow never reached the 30A threshold at the time of failure.. what is the current draw under normal operation? I measured the current flow of my rear defog circuit today; and for the purpose of simplifying the hypothesis here it I'll round it off to: 18A at cold startup of 0C or 32F. Let's also assume that the circuit voltage is always constant.

..so if we are correct that the current draw never reached the peak 30A rating of the fuse where did all the heat/smoke come from? .. now this is going way back to my days in school but it then only makes sense that condition responsible is resistive heating (l2R).. increased resistance from poor contact of the middle sliding window.. think toaster oven, space heater etc.. this phenomenon causes thermal expansion and can literally melt wires.

 

.. Circuit design theory is not my area of expertise.. my background is Robotics.. so I'm hoping for members with expertise to chime in with thoughts.

 

.. If the window is indeed experiencing resistive heating from a high resistance connection due to poor/short sighted design what can be done as a preventive failsafe?.. add a cycling thermostat or thermal fuse like used in a clothes dryer?.. would be a rather ugly preventive measure to what is likely a design flaw with the window connection.. and seems unlikely that GM would step up and go the design route given what also seems to be a known problem with the Ford window design (same glass supplier??)

Yes I verified this morning that my mirrors were warm and my rear window was cold since I pulled the fuse.

Yes, just pull the fuse only. The relay controls both the mirrors and the rear defogger.

This kid is on to something. Many key works in there are spot on.
When and where the load is the highest is where you will have the hottest spot. And where the failure will occur. What can be done to reduce this and when what is the best amp rating of the circuit? Like all things the draw can be high then reduced after a second or so, think hid lights running super low amps but to start we have seen a need for up to 30amp fuses. So the difficulty is how do you protect that circuit.

I finally got my window repaired by the dealer at no cost.  They claimed GM had not found the cause of the wiring fire and window shattering but had another truck with the same issue where the window didn't break and they have sent the window away for analysis. Being a curious electrical engineer I believe the problem could be either a sticking defogger relay that I assume is supposed to cycle the current to the defogger, or a programming glitch in the computer that controls the relay. I tested the relay on the bench but it did not stick with multiple operations. I have disabled the automatic window defog on remote start (since I think that is a possible source for a programming problem). Hopefully GM figures it out soon and refunds the money that people have paid out to fix the damage on their own.!

You obviously know a solution, but won't post it.  Can you message or email it to someone?  You don't have to include technical GM bulletin info, just "install smaller fuse" or "electrical grease on contacts" or similar will work.

My opinion is that it is a programming glitch that keeps the relay on too long in certain situations, can't protect against that with a fuse. GM would have to fix that and issue a recall. A poor design in my opinion when a fuse can't be applied properly to prevent a fire....

Fuse cant help and the same circuit runs the mirror heaters. And saying it keeps it on too long in certain situations means the bcm would have to read another senor be it a temp or baro. Dont see that major software or hardware update being made.
Keep the window contact clean and electric grease then keep your eye on it.
There are other things you can do but on this forum everyone is going to scream for gm to do it. When they don't they will just post something should have been done. And true but I see it as a waste for most people here.

2015 Cadillacs were recalled for the same thing but of course all they did was disable the auto defrost mode. I am sure the relay doesn't cycle based on a sensor but it just set to a timer. Greasing a connection inside the truck isn't going to do much, there is no extra corrosion there to make a hot spot worse. The connection obviously isn't designed properly for the service. The more people complain to GM and NHTSA then the more likelihood something will get done before a baby in a rear car seat is hurt or killed by this defect. Not a waste for most people searching for this problem. Manufacturers need to fix their design defects not worry about goddamn lawyers and insurance. They will just keep ignoring if people don't know where to complain.

Another design issue that I see is that GM is trying to protect 3 separate defroster grids on the sliding rear window with one fuse and wire connection to the fuse panel instead of using 3 separate wires with smaller fuses. Might have been a cost cutting measure but violates a basic design rule in my opinion.

Just happened to my truck this morning.  GM services entered my info and said they cannot do anything to help unless there is a bulletin on the problem.  They told me I am at the mercy of the Dealer, dealer fees, and the dealers service manager.  Very disappointing.  I've told everyone I know that owns a newer Silverado to NOT use the rear defrost!!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
