2018 Silverado Gas Cap.... !!??!!

My 2017 is capless. That's when they started the capless system.  I think it may involve emissions. I bought the GM OEM cover on ebay for like $15, but it's a pain in the ass to use, so it sits in my console now.

Cap-less for Emissions, or Cap-less to save another $14.79 per unit sold, which equates into more profit in GM's pocket at the end of the year?

I can assure you the cost of the truck is not $14.79 less on the window sticker. I like the gas cap on my '14

Sort of like axing an Under the Hood Convenience light I had going back to my 94 Silverado that was handy in a pinch.

Even had a retractable cord that could be stretched just about anywhere inside the engine compartment.

Back then it was about a $10 part/assembly.

Our trucks today do not have a light under the hood from the factory.

Light under the hood was nice, but now everyone has a cell phone and a light on it to use.

Got to admit...until today I've only ever seen one person complain about not having a light under the hood. Is there a manufacturer in the United States that still does that? Or any manufacturer at all? I haven't seen a light under the hood on any car in ten years.

I just picked up my new Silverado 1500 4WD Z71 Saturday.   We went for a nice long drive today and when we returned, I fueled the truck.  CAN THIS BE CORRECT????   There is NO gascap.... just a dumb, sorry stinking little flap that seals the tank. I looked with a flashlight and there are no threads, no way I see to add a gas cap..... REALLY??????   IS THIS RIGHT the way these come???

I am a mechanical engineer..... I can promise you if they think this will work they are out of their rabbit  "A" minds. No engineer would let that happen. Not a real one.... When we test drove the truck, it died at a stoplight.... shuddered...and quit. It started right up and has been flawless since.... I made the comment to the sales guy that it "Felt" and acted like water in the fuel line....

Can someone please tell me if this is how these come now???   THANKS!!!

search silverado gas cap on ebay and you will find a little vinyl cap that goes around the mouth for like $7. I had to buy one because I broke the first door on the fuel neck. You don't have to be a mechanical engineer to know this is a bad idea. Even after they fixed it on my truck the hinged door isn't close to sealing and every time I filled up in the winter I would wipe salt/road grime off the outer gas tank flap/door.

But hey no idiot will fail E-check or whatever the state emission test is for not having a gas cap.......

Wife's Civic has no cap. Enjoy it much more. Always annoyed me when I went to the fuel pump and young fella would let my cap hang down against the truck. (we live in a small town, one full serve gas station). Anyways, zero issues with her car and it.

This seems like a silly thing to be annoyed at.

No cap bothered me a bit a first. One year later, I’ve had no fuel contamination problems and I’m used to it. The area under the filler door stays pretty clean.

I bought one of the plastic locking covers for my 2017 and used it for a good 6 months the key is a PITA to use. When i moved it to this new 2018 the little plastic ear for the lock broke off and I now just drop it over the capless fill tube and use it as a non-lockable  dust cover. I guess the 2017 version does not fit the 2018?  Knowing what I know now, I would have simply taken a pair of pliers and broke the tab off to start with so I would not have had to ever fool with the key LOL.

I bought one of the caps AlterrainX440 mentioned.  I don't see how anyone would think this won't cause a problem.  You have a door on the body as usual... with no seal.  Then you have the flapper that is recessed almost .250 inch  so that recess will catch and hold any dirt, water (car wash) rain, snow....anything that gets behind the body door.  You then stick the fuel nozzel into the tank... and whatever was in that recess is now in your tank.  Just one of the dumbest things I have ever seen anyone engineer.  They could have at least sealed the outer door.   My dealer says they have had numerous reports of water in the gastank since this was put on the trucks.  It's a small thing until it causes a problem...and at some point, it will.

You could always buy an outside locking door matching your paint color, line it with a gasket and be done with it.

Ok, I’ll leave the contaminated fuel discussion to the team.

the REAL problem is not having a gas cap to jam under the fuel nozzle trigger so you don’t have to stand there holding the thing the whole time.

(I have a fix though.   A piece of wooden yardstick with a key ring that hands on the little tab on the inside of the fuel door.   And yes, when the nozzle shuts off the wood prop doesn’t interfere.)

Here in MA we have the trigger locking nozzles. We didn’t have these for years, after they were banned in the 70’s, then the statute was changed in 2015 to allow them again!

We have trigger locking here in Texas too. I guess that would be one of the reasons people are upset about not having gas caps anymore, nothing to wedge in the gas pump when there’s no locking trigger.

There's states that don't have the trigger lock on the pump?  I've fueled up vehicles in probably 15 states and never seen that.
