4x4 broke ?

I recently started having troubles with my 1998 Chevy 1500 and it’s 4 wheel drive I need this because of the terrain I hunt and for the fun I want to have anyways, When I put it into 4 hi it clunks which is normal I hear and same with 4 lo but it doesn’t actually engage all 4 wheels can anyone give me advice on what to start with please

check to make sure the front axle actuator is working

4WD won't engage all 4 wheels.  Probably only the right rear and left front.  It's not a "true" 4WD unless you have lockers.

start with a basic mechanical parts visual inspection. Has the front driveshaft fell off,gaping hole in transaxle housing,new puppy chewed wiring off etc. If everything looks to be in place and it is a floor manual 4whl shift then have a friend help and verify the cable is actually engaging the shift arm on transaxle. If electronic go ahead and replace the actuator at this point that is a common issue.
