Working on purchasing a 2018

Are you stuck on the double cab?  I paid close to that for my '18 crew cab Z71.  Might open up your options a bit to consider the crew cab.  Way better re-sale too.  As far as break-in, don't worry about it.  The same guideline has existed since non-pressurized oiling and solid lifters.  Just drive it, you won't hurt anything.

The actual wording in the owners manual is pretty soft.

The vehicle does not need an
elaborate break-in. But it will
perform better in the long run if
you follow these guidelines:

.
Keep the vehicle speed at
88 km/h (55 mph) or less for
the first 805 km (500 mi).
.
Do not drive at any one
constant speed, fast or slow,
for the first 805 km (500 mi).
Do not make full-throttle
starts. Avoid downshifting to
brake or slow the vehicle.
.
Avoid making hard stops for
the first 322 km (200 mi) or
so. During this time the new
brake linings are not yet
broken in. Hard stops with
new linings can mean
premature wear and earlier
replacement. Follow this
breaking-in guideline every
time you get new brake
linings.
.
Do not tow a trailer during
break-in.

I went 2 weeks ago 10 hours to get the truck I wanted.  My local dealer doesn't have in 19 on his lot yet much less a 3500 CC LWB SRW Duramax!!!  I almost left with out buying it due to dealer adding aftermarket bumpers!!!  But after some get up and walk out the door times, we were able to make a deal on my truck.  Just because you drive 2-3 hours to look at a truck does not mean you are forced to buy it if its not the way you want it at the price point you want to be at walk away they are building new trucks everyday and you will find what you want.  By the way I am friends with the owner of the local dealership and when he saw my truck he called and asked me where I got it and what I paid for it and then said he could not have beat the price, but he knows that all the service work will be preformed at his shop due to him having a great staff of truck guys and not one but two Duramax experts.  :jester:

It is not at all uncommon for prospective buyers to find a higher price once they arrive from afar, even after confirming the price multiple times. Dealers take advantage of the situation and figure you are unlikely to turn back after coming so far, that you will cave. The excuse given is usually the old "mistake in pricing" dodge. Just another way that dealers endear themselves to honest folk.

Find the big rebates and try to get local dealer to price match. I used Jim Trenery in Union Mo when they ran $16k off the CC z71. My local dealer advertises “meet or beat” price matching. Of course they couldn’t but they got within $585 of the price and I save 8hr round trip.

I so broke every one of those “break-in” rules... wonder what the rule is on the Range device? I had that plugged in well before 500 miles as well.

There is no way in HELL I wouldn’t test drive a GM 1/2 ton out on the interstate and run it up to 80 mph to see if it’s a shaker. Don’t care how cheap I was getting it or how far I drove to find it. But that’s just me.

I should figure out who bought that 99 Firehawk I test drove brand new (I was the first person to take it off the lot including everybody that worked there only reason the sales manager let me is because I drove on the lot in a Vette) and apologized for what I done did to their car. In my defense the salesman said “let’s see what this thing can do” so I blame him!

That’s a win win IMO dealer will hopefully treat you better in the future if you ever need anything from them since you bought it from them. I’ve tried that around here couple different dealers and it’s always been a no go.

To the OP you also got to pay attention to the fine print some of the stealerships, around here some play the “how much do you want your payment to be” game instead of the truck costs this much. And read the fine print on and of the “stealership” deals, just got the wife a new SUV (a Ford of all things) two of the Ford stealerships offer “lifetime” power train warranties, one place says every service for anything has to be done there to qualify other place says as long as it’s done at a ASE certified shop. Big difference there IMO only way I found that was by reading the fine print on their websites. Salesmen neglected to mention that part. The big Chevy dealer around here offers free rotations if you buy tires from them. They have a onsite quick lube for oil changes, rotations, ect. Use to be you could get your oil changed and they do the free rotation there, then somebody decided that the quick lube wasn’t getting anything for these “free” rotations so they said since the service department sells them they can do the “free” rotations, yet new vehicle rotations can still be done at the quick lube. Well now you have to make an appointment with service to get the “free” rotation but service doesn’t do oil changes so your still stuck going to the quick lube for oil changes. Never mind the fact that the same tires are 10% cheaper down the road at Discount with free rotations no appointment needed.

So long story short I’m in the market to buy a 2018 LT double cab with the All Star Package. I found one for $33,236 before tax. I feel this is a pretty great deal. My buddy also said he could get me a code for the friends and family discount so that should be another $1500 off. The truck is exactly what I’ve been looking for. The only problem is it’s 2.5 hrs away. I’m trying to get my local dealers to price match but so far I’ve had no luck.

The only concerns I have are 1 driving a new vehicle that far on the highway and not breaking it in properly I know not to use cruise control and vary the speeds, but it’s still a concern I have. Also the only reason I still have my current vehicle is because I was able to build a relationship with my local Subaru dealer and they were able to fight for me to get the engine replaced under warranty.

Have any of you had similar luck building a good relationship with a dealer you didn’t buy from.

Thanks,

Alec

I bought my truck in april of 2014, drove it off the lot to the Uhaul and then moved to a city 2.5 hours away while towing the Uhaul.  My truck is now 2.5 years old and doing wonderfully.  I don't think you should worry about breaking in on the highway.

I’m not stuck in the double cab that’s just what I found the “best” deal on.

I have found some good deals on vehicles in the past by using Autotrader.com.  Car Gurus is a good one as well.  Worth a shot.

I was forced into a double cab because they quit making the extended cab my choice. Break in for me was drive it like I drive. Usually hard.

I purchased my 2014 in Pennsylvania in Sept of 2014, then moved to Illinois in October.  First Chevy dealer I went to had a service department full of know-it-alls that I promptly stopped doing business with.  The dealer I chose to go to after that has been awesome.  So good, in fact, I just traded my 2014 for a 2018 with them.  I have a single person in the service department I work with and I like and trust him.  SO short story long, yes, you can build relationships with dealers you didn't buy from.

And don't worry about the drive home on a new motor, just shift it back and forth between M5 and M6 occasionally (if it's a 6 speed) to force the RPM's to change and vary your speed while driving and you should be fine.

*EDIT* Just realized you are in Pittsburgh.  I lived in Cranberry when I bought my 2014.  Worked at West Penn Hospital at the time.

I see your in Peoria, IL.  Which dealer are you using now?

Cool  I've heard good things about them.  Got mine at Bob Grimm in Morton. They had a killer deal, no one else around here would match it.

The truck you bought is the holy grail of trucks, imo!  Pics please.

I can turn you on to its almost twin that is a lot closer to you than it was to me!!!  I found two at a time with only small differences and the advertised price on the one in MT, was about $2500 cheaper than the one I did finally buy. :jester:

I truly wish I could take advantage of your offer but I'm struggling to justify upgrading to a 1/2 ton max tow with my money boss!!  A diesel 1 ton would be an unimaginably tough  argument to win in my house!  Your truck c/w bumpers looks outstanding and I'm sure you must get many compliments.  Enjoy!
