T1 6.2 letdown?

The Corvette uses a torque tube and transaxle set up, the Camaro features a standard style transmission that bolts directly to the engine. The reason the Vette uses a transaxle is to distribute the weight more evenly throughout the car. With the C7 platform they managed to achieve a 49-51% weight split biasing the rear, which is a remarkable achievement for a front engine car with a large V8. Makes me wonder about the purpose of the mid-engine car a little. There is no transaxle version of the 10L90 as of yet. 

 

Front/rear balance is only part of the equation.

 

The polar moment of inertia for a mid-engine car is much smaller, so the car will turn better.

 

Basically, placing heavy components closer to the center of mass makes the car less resistant to rotating [emoji106]

A 40/60 is considered "perfect" like most mid-engine cars. But growing up in muscle cars and trucks my idea of perfect is 50/50. The Corvette has always been a beast of a car, one that takes time to learn how it will reward you or kill you. By taking away from its animalistic nature sort of defeats the purpose of a sportscar in my mind. I want a car to drive me as much as I drive it, if you get what I am saying. Mid engine will be too tame are composed to be a Corvette. I almost feel the C8 should not wear a Corvette badge other than the fact Zora always dreamed of one. I hope they still offer a manual trans, pushrod, ft-engine Corvette for the rest of time. The new car will be quick, but will it be better than the ZR1 on the first kick at the cat? I remember the Pontiac Fiero. lol Cheers.

 

Anyways back to thread, the new 6.2L is not a let down because it didn't really change from the L86. People cant honestly expect them to run an engine for 5 years before a complete redesign, if you aren't happy with 420hp then buy a Procharger. They wont be doing the LS1, LS2/6, LS3 update thing with these engines like the old C5 Corvettes. If they do, the cars will get the power bump, not pick up trucks.

I think you missed the main point of the thread. The new 6.2 appears to be slower than the outgoing L86 in the K2's, which even weighed a couple hundred lbs more on top of it.

10 speed trans perhaps? But the 10 speed made both the ZL1 and Mustang GT faster so I cant see that being the reason. At the end of the day it is a pick-up, they aren't meant to be fast, albeit a bonus, they are intended to have to power to work. The 2014 K2 6.2L with the 6L80e were faster in the 1/4m than the 2015+ 6.2L with the 8L90e. I have a 6.2L, its great, it is quick, more power than I need, but do I think its a let down that the T1 will run a 13.9 and the K2 will run a 13.7? Not at all. Buy a Camaro or Corvette if a 13 second pick up truck is not quick enough. V8 sports cars of the mid 2000's weren't even running these times, I would say we are pretty spoiled being around the 400hp mark and getting 17mpg.

Running errands in my 2019 6.2L and 10 speed today.  All I could think was..... damn this thing feels 0.3 seconds slower in the quarter mile.  GOD DAMN IT.  I would gladly take my old truck back with its awful 8 speed transmission clunk and rear end slip yolk clunk noises and the vibration issue just to get back that 0.3 seconds.  By the way, if anybody wants my 2017 it is up at Laura GMCs used lot.  It hauls ass.

I would like to see the difference comparing the 2019 -  5.3, 8 speed vs 6.2, 10 speed. 

I bet it's not that much...

I would venture to say in most cases people have noticed over the years the need to plant your foot to get your vehicle moving isn’t required like in years gone by. I haven’t owned a vehicle in awhile that if I did my traction control light would flash. In this example it appears the best launch won regardless of horsepower. Unless you’re pulling or putting bigger tires on the bigger engines aren’t needed unless for bragging rights.

you better plant your foot to get a 6.2 truck going. They have the secondary "notch" at the bottom of the pedal. This could be part of the issue, as most people that drive for the first time don't realize this until they really push down on the pedal. 

 

I had a 2014 with 5.3 ... traded and got a 2016 with 6.2.  I remember the first few days I was thinking the new truck didn't seem that much faster... that was until I really pushed down hard on the pedal and discovered the magical "notch".

I discovered that detent after I did the gas pedal flex mod, and i actually thought it my pedal was binding up on something after i put the shim in. Then I started googling things and found there is actually a section in the owner's manual about the kickdown detent on the 6.2. Odd that only the 6.2 has it and not the 5.3.

The 10-speed clunks on downshifts in the 2018+ F-150's so there's no guarantee it won't affect some GM 10-speed trucks too.

Well I have one.  So I actually have experience driving one for several thousand miles. And the 10 speed in my newest GM truck is far and away better than any 8 speed I have driven in the last gen GM trucks, including my own 6.2 8 speed and all the service loaner 8 speeds I had to drive while mine was supposedly getting fixed.  You just seem to like to be negative about vehicles you have no experience driving.

We know it has a tad less torque, but it's lighter and has a transmission that is similar in shifting speed. It's faster yes, on the cars(barely, so  far the 2019 SS it's only shown to be .1 second than the 8 speed)but is different programming due to trucks.

 

But a bit less peak torque shouldn't be .3 slower with less weight. It has to be the powerband, or in some software, I'd  to see a power grapha side by side with the the older 6.2, but it may come down to stability or torque management being more aggressive, although the engine programming may be laid back a bit to get better CAFE numbers. All the software side of things will come to light after tuners figure it out

Awesome I'm happy for you. Just pointing out that the Ford/GM 10-speed has had plenty of complaints for hard downshifts and clunks when approach a stop too.

    • Most thermostatically controlled ATF systems use a 'wax' pill just like the one in your water thermostat. They work on the expansion volume of the wax and the pill is constructed in such a way as to limit the travel to remain within that range. This means it has an opening temperature often called the 'cracking temperature' and a fully open temperature. For whatever reason oil is designated by it's fully open temperature and water by it's cracking temperature.    Between the two it the "Regulating Temperature" The entire range is about 20 F from closed to open. In your example the lower limit, opening point of 145 F then has a fully open temp of 165 F and a throttling temperature of 155 F.    Thing is, the throttling temperature needs two things to work properly. Enough system load high enough to reach the minimum and a heat sink (cooler/exchanger) large enough to prevent any load applied from exceeding the fully open temperature.    If your system exceeds the fully open temperature it is screaming MORE COOLER.    Here is the silly part of the whole thermostat system where the oil is cooled/heated by the radiator. Nothing is flowing to that system until the oil temperature reaches the cracking temperature unless it is equipped with a minimum flow bypass orifice or a bypass built into the seating surface of the plunger. That system meant to get it up to temp quicker isn't doing a thing until WORK drives if from ambient to cracking temp. One a cold winter day, like zero F, it may never get hotter than about 110 F. Sometimes not even that.    People forget or are young enough to not know that until this millennia transmissions were cooled by the radiator cold tank alone and without a thermostat at all.  In the 50's they weren't even cooled. OEMs learn everything the hard way.    When an OEM tells you the trans "Works best" between 175 F and 220 F it means works best for THEM. The transmission thermostat is fuel play. If you watch you trans temps like I do you will learn that it may take a hundred miles if you are not towing and not driving more than say 55-60 mph on a zero F day to even reach 120 F and it might sit there all day if it's colder. Yet if functions perfectly over about 100 F. It may need to get a bit warmer for the fuel and spark maps to go without an multiplier.    Worry more about too hot. Use a cooler large enough to put that thermostat in range.         
    • Around 2008 if memory serves they took sulfur out. That was when diesel went up. 
    • Question for you Grumpy, why is diesel so much more than gasoline? Seems to me that it may be slightly a little less refined than gas and it doesn't have 10% alcohol which presumably lowers the price of gas

    • How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.
