On my 2016 I put 84,000 miles on it in 3 years!  My only maintenance was oil changes, transmission Flush under warranty at 53K and new tires at 60K.  Averaged 20.7 mpg over the 84K miles.

My vote goes to a commuter car. I have found myself in situations similar to yours.  These trucks are great on gas but the difference is significant when compared to a car like a Toyota Yaris.  (My last Commuter)    Keeping the mileage low on your truck also has longer term benefits.

Depends on how you feel about your commute, you go back and forth in comfort with heated seats and steering wheel,leather, all the bells and whistle and safer orrrrr  in a beater car that may not have any of that but youll be keeping the truck low miles for the next guy. My vote is you bought it, drive it and enjoy it. It left the lot so the value is already down.

I DD mine. My work round trip is 35 miles a day, but with the gym, and kids stuff I'm averaging about 17k a year on the truck. It's just coming up on 2 years old with 34k miles. While I'd love to garage it for nice days and to keep the miles down I also bought it to enjoy it (especially with the LTZ trim).

Note, that the OP was proposing a commuter car, and a beater truck, not a beater commuter. 

 

You don't have to spend a lot on a small car to get heated seats, current connectivity options, and some leather.

Fuel and maintenance are only part of the picture.

 

Vehicles lose value with every mile driven.

 

Depreciation is gonna be the lion’s share of the costs to commute in any vehicle.

 

IMHO keep the truck and get a beater commuter. A used Corolla can’t be killed.

It's easy to underestimate the cost of driving.  For example, if you get compensated to drive somewhere by your employer, at first glance, it may look like the rate they pay puts money in your pocket, when you simply compare what the trip cost you in gas.  But, driving costs a lot more that gas money.

thats correct. I would spend a little more on the commuter car and get a beater truck... Something like this..

It really depends on your long term plans and how interested you are in paying for fuel. At 320 miles per week, you could save roughly 10 cents per mile with a car. That's about $130 a month. For a year or two, who cares. Over 10 years it certainly adds up.

I don't know about your insurance, but I have a work beater that gets 30 mpg on the highway. It definitely does save us money even after insurance cost. As for maintenance, my ride currently has 197,000 miles on it and the first major thing that goes wrong- its going to the scrap heap. Then I'll look for another one.

I hate driving my truck, I bought it because I need to DD it and it was the most comfortable and fastest thing I could buy.

 

i’d take a car any day over a truck if I didn’t need it.

 

Everything is more expensive when you have to drive around 5500lbs. They are a bitch to park, the ride is rough, and they handle like crap compared to a car.

I used to work in various transportation offices and got to drive a very diverse lineup of vehicles. I realize this is not a question of quality. However, the main reason over anything else that I went with my Silverado was because of the noticeable ride quality they have over the competition. I was trying to decide between a Toyota Tundra, (really nice trucks by the way) and ended up going with my Silverado because the price I was able to get it for. I do not regret it for a second. 

 

Certainly, I am having ride quality issues right now that I am trying to figure out, and even with that I do not regret it. However, I am not and have never gotten anywhere close to these other guys in gas mileage. I get around 14-16 MPG and mine is the 4.8 V8 and it is 4x4. I guess you can take the other guys estimates closer to heart since your truck is closer to theirs. However, that is what I average. Anyway just wanted to put in my two cents, there are expensive cars that do not ride as good as these trucks do.

LoL, a "truckguy" who hates driving trucks.  Now that's funny. 

 

Personally, on the highway, I don't mind a big heavy truck at all.  In town, I definitely feel the heft of a half ton.  I find a midsize truck like the Canyon makes me happy in town.  I don't mind the rougher ride.  That said, if I could get a free car, and a spot to park it, I'd happily take a small crossover to commute in, and drive around town.  I love how many more options you get in a $30k car, compared to a $50k truck.

You live in NC? Depending on budget If it were me I'd get a used C5 corvette w/ a stick or a civic/accord w/ a stick  - I prefer/miss driving stick in my DD - makes commuting more "fun" depending on what your situation is - obviously dead stopped commuter traffic isn't fun in a manual tranny car but honestly doesn't bother me much - stick shifts get better MPGs, you will get 30 hwy in a vette......low 20's in city as long as you're not romping on it. These days they're also typically cheaper than a comparably equipped automatic version.

On flip side w/ a civic you can drive it like you stole it 24/7 & the worst you'll see is high 20's avg mpg ;-)

 

 

I work from home & most miles driven for work are expensed @ $.545 per mile or whatever it is these days - so DD'ing the truck isn't a big deal for me - I live in MA & go all over new england & beyond for work rain or shine so I needed 4wd, have a 3.5 year old & a dog so needed to have some room, have a big yard & do alot of projects on my own so need cargo space.....an SUV is not my style so my DD is a crew cab 4x4 truck.
