The Range on my Factory Remote Start...

Recommended Posts

Is INSANE!

At the hospital I work at, I will occasionally park in the west parking garage, and I work in the center tower, which is easily a football field away. After clocking out, I head down to the 4th floor which has a window where I can see the west parking garage. If I'm in the line of sight, I can get remote start to work no problem!

Anyone else have good tales of impressive fob range?

On the older platform trucks there was a 2way with 10 times the range. Your new trucks have options for more features as well and longer range. I don't need that so stock for me. Range is good.

I haven't been real impressed with the range to be honest. It seems to work right outside the house but when I'm at by buddies place and park at the end of the driveway (maybe 100 yards?) it won't turn on at all. Fairly dense tree during the summer but even during the dead of winter nothing.

Unless somethings changed since my 14 GMC I was able to use my phone as a remote start. It went through on Star and was free as long as you activate during the free on star period. No range problems with that.

Limited to 5 years from data of activation, at least supposedly. They changed it later to be like 2 years I think?

Can start mine from anywhere, that On Star app is pretty sweet:) I think that the free service on On Star is supposed to be good for 10 years, not sure without looking at my account.

And on 2018+ vehicles GM actually made it 1 MONTH before they charge you!

A whole month! If they didn't try and absolutely f*$k you on the price I'd be down to pay. $3-4 a month seems fair. I'd pay $5 if they let me set my heating/cooling from the phone. Nope, I'll stick with the key that was "free".

I had a viper 2 way alarm on my old truck. That sucker would go FAR!! I could park a football field away from a store entrance and it would still work inside the building.

My new truck with factory remote start barely makes it across a pee-wee sized football field of a parking lot on a clear day with nothing blocking it.

2014 here...I never thought the range on the fob was all that great.   I'll be bummed when my 5 years is up this summer.   Totally agree, they should have a basic plan for under $5, otherwise not worth it.

If I recall correctly in April of 2018 they changed it to a couple months free and that was it. I think if you bought in early 2018 you got the 5 year deal. So naturally I bought mine in May without knowing that.....
