My friend just totaled his 14 with 5.3. 111,11 on it and nothing else but oil changes.

My cousins 14 Double Cab 5.3 has No catch can and AFM has been enabled since new.

Ugh you guys with your "back in the day" comments and how everything was better blah blah blah.

My favorite is the guy above who "tells anybody looking for a new truck" to go out and search for a 2010 LOL!!!!!~

"But but but.. I spent all my hard earned money on this and they screwed me!"

as if the amount of money you spend for something is supposed to guarantee little to no issues.

It's a mechanical device, folks.  No matter the amount of Q/C and testing that goes into them.. sometimes they can't anticipate everything.  it sucks I know it.. but get over it and move on.   If you can.

GM loves you!!!   As long as people are willing to make excuses for everything, from why kids are raised the way they are to why there is no Q/C control on anything (GM, restaurants, anything that we pay for anymore) Our society will continue to slip into the bowels of hell. If things can't be sugar coated people don't want to hear it!

Its easy to anticipate problems that happen year after year.

GM's solution, cut the warranty.

But people do need to realize GM could not care less if your truck lasts past the warranty period. Their job is to get you to buy it (that's why there is a warranty), and have it last for 36 - 60 months with minimal expenditure from them. After that they want to sell you a new one, not keep the old one going. That's why they cut the power train warranty. If the entire truck died at 61k miles, that would be perfect for them.

I disagree.  That may have been the attitude many years ago, but since the Crapotas and Hondas from the 80s and 90s that proved that vehicles could be engineered for long term use and reliability (from a power train perspective) the Big 3 have known that they have to do better and have indeed done better.  Now.  Crapota and Hondas are not perfect either.  they have pattern failures, they have things they don't do well that the domestic products do do well, and so on.  Competition is a good thing.  So when someone claims they believe a manufacturer is purposely not building something to last, I generally think they are full of shit.  But then again.. we are all full of shit sooner or later.  But the shit must flow.  So out goes the bad shit, and in comes the good shit... oh nevermind.

So why did GM reduce its drive train warranty to 60k? Almost half of what is was.

It's not because they want your truck to last longer.

It's some what true. I had my 06 Silverado ext cab z71 5.3 for almost 10 years, a set of brake pads and 1 left hub bearing. That all other then oil changes. Do I think my 15 Sierra is a lot nicer interior wise? Absolutely. But in my opinion I do think my 06 was built better then my 15. Hey if i can drive this truck 10 years and only have one repair I will be super happy. Only time will tell.

Is it just the 6.2 with injector issues?

My cousin has 14 5.3 Silverado. Owned since new. Does minimal maintenance. Oil changes are when OLM says change. He now has 136k on it. No problems other than battery dead 3 years in.

I am pretty sure they all use the same injectors. My buddy had a 16 5.3 and with 58000 miles he had the misfires. Still had the powertrain warranty but the injectors aren't covered. Cost him almost $2000. He now owns a 19 F150.

Don't you just love it how they keep things like injectors and sensors out of the warranty?

***They need a group of smart guys to make a new auto company***. Crazy right? But I'm serious. Think about this. Just give us a real frame, a LONG proven engine/transmission, real thick leather, and a cold AC. You can keep the park assist, alerts, lane detection, auto parking, heated steering wheels, TVs in the seats, chipping lead free paint, etc... etc... etc... I mean seriously. I CAN'T BE THE ONLY ONE WHO FEELS THIS WAY!?!?!?!?! Why should I and so many others want/need to go build a quality truck/SUV like this piece by piece, when a smart company could easily offer such a thing and sell the f**k out of it but they dont?

Why don't you buy a Tundra, then?

Well the warranty in 2003 (my last truck)was 3 yrs. 36,000 miles. They increased the warranty (2007 ?) for two distinct reasons. First and foremost was to create the perception that they didn't build a POS and second to lift sagging sales due to the first. Well when sales didn't skyrocket  (remain somewhat flat) they decided to reduce the warranty (2016?).

The warranty for any object isn't based on how well it works but rather a marketing tool for sales. Why offer a huge warranty? To bolster sales. If it doesn't work, why offer it? This is Marketing 101 and that's why the warranty decreased. To think there is some hidden agenda there is Oliver Stone stuff. Marketing pure and simple. The product isn't really any different (life expectancy wise) from 2003 so why offer an inflated warranty unless sales reflect it works.

They did this because their engine is inherently flawed in two ways, and there is no easy fix.

  1. They know that AFM is garbage and will eventually tank the engine. But its the only way they can meet EPA regulations without a complete engine redesign.
  2. They know their particular GDI design is prone to carbon build up, which (at best) will eventually reduce performance on the truck. This clogs up the injectors and the intake valves, leading to problems like what the OP has experienced. There is a realistic probability that carbon might flake off and damage other parts of the engine, including the cylinder, exhaust, oil system, or even the cat. Other manufactures are solving this issue by adding dual injection (periodic port injection). GM can't implement this without a complete engine redesign.

Basically, to fix these two major engine problems, GM has to redesign their engine. Its easier just to shorten the warranty.

As you've seen from this thread, plenty of people will line up to defend GM, and they know this. Brand loyalty is one hell of a drug, and its really hard to kick, especially when you've invested upwards of fifty grand. If they can shorten their warranty and not lose sales, why wouldn't they?

To say that other brands are "just as bad" is unequivocally false. Other brands do have their issues, but I can't think of very many problems that Ford or Dodge has allowed to persist for more than 2-3 model years. Even the notoriously bad transmission on the recent generation of Ram got resolved within 4 years.   GM doesn't even post a recall when a part has been proven to take lives. See "ignition gate" or what is currently going on with the vacuum pump and brake system.

If you can't afford to trade it in (like me) then I advise you treat your truck like the house of cards that it is. Change the oil more than you change your underwear; use top quality filters; put in the aftermarket upgrades designed to postpone carbon build up and lifter failure (eg. catch can and range unit); and take up some form of religion so you have someone to pray to that your $50,000 liability-on-wheels lasts another 30,000 miles.
